Boxer Gervonta Davis Arrested for Domestic Violence After Jacking His Baby Mama Up By the Neck at Charity Event

Boxer Gervonta Davis has been arrested for domestic violence following an altercation with his ex-girlfriend during Super Bowl weekend. Video of the incident soon went viral.

The current WBA lightweight champion turned himself in to Coral Gables, Florida authorities on Tuesday (Feb. 4) and was charged with one count of simple battery domestic violence.

Coral Gables Police wrote in a statement:

“As a result of an ongoing investigation after being notified through social media and the victim, on Feb. 1 2020, [Davis] was observed battering his former girlfriend whom [sic] have child together…[Davis] surrendered himself, to the Coral Gables Police detectives assigned to the case.”

On Saturday (Feb. 1), Davis and Andretta Smothers—the mother of his child—separately attended a charity basketball game in Miami.

Video shows Davis approaching a seated Smothers and forcefully grabbing her near her neck, yanking her from the seat. He then directed her out of the arena where the “heated” argument reportedly continued backstage.

Once the video went viral and social media dragged the boxer for being abusive, Davis tried to downplay the situation.

“I never once hit her, yea I was aggressive and told her come on,” he wrote on Instagram. “That’s the mother of my child I would never hurt her.”

TMZ notes Davis has a history of being aggressive outside of the boxing ring. In 2017, he was arrested for punching a friend. And he was arrested again in 2018 for a street fight.

15-Year-Old High School Football Player Shot Dead at Grandfather’s Funeral, Shooting Caused by Family Dispute

A high school sophomore was shot dead just moments after attending his grandfather’s funeral.

15-year-old Terrance Jackson was shot in the neck on Saturday (Feb. 1) across the street from the church where he and his family held a memorial service for his grandfather.

He was transported to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead. He would have turned 16 later this week.

Tronicia Jackson, Terrance’s mother, is stricken with grief by the loss of her son.

“My baby didn’t do anything. He never hung out on the street. He never ran with the crowd,” she told WSVN. “My baby played football, went to school and played video games all the time. He was never that type of kid.”

The Florida teen was one of three victims from the shooting. 47-year-old Royce Freeman was pronounced dead on the scene and a woman was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

While the suspect is still at large, police believe the shooting was the result of a family dispute.

“While the motive for the shooting is still being investigated, it is believed it was a result of a dispute between relatives of the deceased whose funeral had been held,” Riviera Beach Police said in a statement.

The photo above was taken just 20 minutes before the shooting. Terrance is on the right, wearing white pants and a blue vest.

Victory City Church pastor Tywuante Lupoe revealed on the church’s Facebook page that the church was aware of potential violence within the family and ensured there was extra security guards and police posted in the area.

Lupoe says the shooting took place after most of the funeral attendees had left the service and did not occur on church grounds.

However, he also slammed Riviera Beach police for not doing more to prevent the fatal shooting.

Lupoe wrote:

“Riviera Beach Police need to take responsibility too. As a church who serves the community, we called and asked for their assistance before this tragedy took place. We informed them of the potential violence. Our tax dollars should ensure we get what we need in order for our citizens and families can be protected. If we request you be there, be there.”

15-year-old Terrance was a rising star on Deerfield Beach High School’s football team. He had actually skipped a college tour trip with the team to attend his grandfather’s funeral.

“Why God!” the team wrote on Twitter after Terrance’s passing.

“He was waiting in the wings,” Coach Jevon Glenn said of Terrance. “This year was going to be his year.”

Terrance is the second Deerfield football player to die in recent months.

17-year-old Bryce Gowdy, a Georgia Tech football signee, was killed in December after being hit by a train. A medical examiner ruled Gowdy’s death a suicide.

A GoFundMe page has been created for Terrance’s funeral and family.

Moneybagg Yo Allegedly Snatches Ari Fletcher’s Wig During Fight in Middle of Miami Street After Super Bowl

Things don’t seem to be going well for new couple Moneybagg Yo and Ari Fletcher. The two allegedly got into a physical altercation that left Fletcher wigless.

Rumors of the fight began to spread on social media early Monday morning (Feb. 3) after a Twitter user claimed to have witnessed it all go down in the middle of a Miami street.

From what can be gathered, Fletcher punched Moneybagg in the face and he retaliated by snatching her wig off her head.

Although there is no video footage confirming what happened during the altercation, there is video of some sort of disturbance occurring in the middle of the street as onlookers watch an SUV quickly pulling off.

Many have shared their thoughts about the alleged scuffle on Twitter, noting Fletcher’s history of violent behavior in previous relationships with rapper G Herbo (also the father of her child) and boxer Gervonta Davis.

Moneybagg and Fletcher have been in a relationship since earlier this year.

Aspiring Chicago Rapper Young QC Sentenced to 99 Years in Prison for Paying Friend to Kill His Mom & Flexing Her Life Insurance Money on Social Media

Qaw’mane Wilson was just 23 years old back in September 2012 when he hired his friend to kill his mother, Yolanda Holmes.

Now, at the age of 30, the Chicago man has been sentenced to 99 years in prison for the heinous crime officials described as “matricide.”

“The word is ‘matricide,’ meaning murder of one’s own mother,” Cook County Judge Stanley Sacks said Friday (Jan. 31) as he stared down from the bench at Wilson and one of Wilson’s accomplices, Eugene Spencer.

“Whatever he wanted, his mother gave to him. A car. A job. One could say he was spoiled. She gave Qaw’mane life, and it was his choice to take it away from her.”

Prosecutors said Spencer rode with Wilson’s girlfriend, Loriana Johnson, to Holmes’ Uptown apartment in the early-morning hours of September 2nd, 2012 and shot Holmes as she slept in her bed.

Pictured: Qaw’mane Wilson, Loriana Johnson and Eugene Spencer

After struggling with Holmes’ boyfriend and knocking him unconscious, Spencer called Wilson, who told him to “make sure the bitch is dead.” Spencer then finished Holmes off by stabbing her to death.

A week later, Wilson (also known by his rap name “Young QC”) gained access to more than $90,000 from his mom’s bank accounts and life insurance policies.

And not long after that, while investigating Holmes’ murder, police came across photos of Wilson showing off wads of cash, luxury cars, jewelry, clothes and more on his Instagram, Facebook and YouTube accounts.

In addition to flexing on social media, it is believed Wilson—Holmes’ only child—used some of the money to fund his rap career.

Prosecutors said Wilson also used the cash to customize a Mustang his mom had gifted to him with gull-wing doors.

On one occasion, he filmed himself withdrawing thousands of dollars from a bank and tossing wads of cash to a crowd of people he said were fans of his music. The video, which was posted on his YouTube channel, was played for the jury during the trial.

Spencer initially told Chicago police detectives that Wilson had sent him to Holmes’ apartment around 4 a.m. to drop off some clothes. Spencer claimed, at the door of the apartment, he encountered a man he identified as the killer and a struggle ensued.

Spencer said he heard gunshots after the man ran into Holmes’ bedroom, and he believed Wilson had tried to set him up to also be killed. When detectives pressed him, he gave several different versions of his story.

At first, Spencer said he dropped the gun and it went off, then he claimed that the gun went off as he fought with “the killer” before finally admitting to shooting Holmes and then stabbing her himself.

Spencer’s attorneys tried to point the finger at the man Spencer fought, Curtis Wyatt, who was Holmes’ boyfriend and had spent the night at her house the night of the murder.

Wyatt ID’d Spencer as the man who opened fire on him and Holmes as the couple slept in the bed.

Wyatt said Spencer hit him with the gun, which he left behind at the scene. Wyatt also said he was able to fight Spencer off and chase him out of the apartment.

As for Wilson, he told police that the whole thing was Spencer’s idea. Wilson said Spencer was supposed to simply rob Holmes, and killing her was never part of the plan.

Wilson told detectives: “It was supposed to be a robbery.” Spencer said Wilson offered to pay him $3,500, but only paid him $70.

Loriana Johnson, who has always claimed she was told the crime she was an accomplice to was a robbery and not murder, was found guilty in 2015 of armed robbery and was sentenced to 14 years. With time served, and using Illinois’ “day-served equals day-credit” policy, she’s due to be released sometime this year.

In March 2019, Wilson and Spencer were both found guilty of first-degree murder, attempted murder and home invasion by separate juries.

“After all this, we still don’t understand why he did it,” said Sondra Jackson, Holmes’ aunt (and Wilson’s great-aunt), who attended each day of the weeklong trial with a group of relatives and always sat on the side of the courtroom behind prosecutors. “We are just happy to have this over.”

Wilson was sentenced to 99 years in prison, while Spencer was sentenced to 100 years.

When asked if he had anything to say before the judge handed down the lengthy sentence, Wilson remarked: “I just want to say, nobody loved my mother more than me. She was all I had. That’s it.”

Brandy Mourns Her Prom Date Kobe Bryant & His Daughter Gigi After Their Tragic Death

Brandy is the latest celebrity to pay tribute to Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, who both died in a tragic helicopter crash earlier this week.

The singer—who famously went to Kobe’s prom as his date in 1996—shared her condolences in an Instagram post on Friday (Jan. 31) which included an illustration of Kobe and Gianna (aka “GiGi”).

“Never will I understand. My condolences to @vanessabryant, and all families who are in pain during this tragic time,” Brandy wrote.

After meeting at the 1996 Essence awards, Bryant asked Brandy—who was already a star—to his senior prom in Philadelphia.

“He came home … and said, ‘I met such a nice, beautiful, intelligent, sweet person,'” Bryant’s mom told the Philadelphia Daily News at the time.

Brandy told the New York Daily News she decided to go with Bryant because “he was a nice guy” and had gotten her mom’s approval.

A few months later, Bryant guest-starred on Brandy’s show, Moesha, playing a high school basketball star who needed help studying for the SATs by Brandy’s character.

The two never dated, but Bryant stated they had a “very friendly relationship” during a joint 1996 Entertainment Tonight interview.

And in 2016, Brandy revealed to TMZ that she still has the Moschino dress she wore to Bryant’s prom.

Bryant, Gianna, and seven others died in a helicopter crash on January 26th in Calabasas, California. They were head to Gianna’s basketball team’s tournament.

Terry Crews Apologizes to Gabrielle Union & the Black Women Who Supported Him After Being Dragged for Dismissing Union’s “AGT” Racism Claims

After being dragged on social media earlier this month for dismissing Gabrielle Union’s claims of racial insensitivity on the set of America’s Got Talent, Terry Crews—the show’s host—has issued an apology.

On Thursday afternoon (Jan. 31), Crews issued a personal apology to Union for invalidating her AGT experience, which was supported by other sources.

He wrote in part:

@itsgabrielleu I want you to know it was never my intention to invalidate your experience—but that is what I did. I apologize. You have been through a lot in this business, and with that I empathize with the struggle toward fairness and equality in the workplace.

“You are a role model to the entire black community,” he added. “I should have at the very least understood you just needed my support.”

Crews’ apology to union was part of a longer thread in which the actor and host addressed the backlash he received after he dismissed Union’s claims in several interviews simply because it was not his experience.

He even went as far as to say that AGT was the most diverse production he’s been a part of in entertainment.

Union clapped back at his comments and he also received much criticism from black women, especially since Union and black women, in particular, were the main ones to support him when became one of the few men to reveal he’d been sexually harassed in Hollywood and joined the #MeToo movement.

He retaliated by tweeting that the only woman he needed to please was his wife, and not the women who had supported him.

“There is only one woman one earth I have to please. Her name is Rebecca,” he wrote in a now-deleted tweet. “Not my mother, my sister, my daughters or co-workers. I will let their husbands/ boyfriends/ partners take care of them. Rebecca gives me WINGS.”

Either from clarity or the need to do some damage control, he is now apologizing for how his cavalier words hurt many.

“I told @KevinHart4real a while ago, he needed 2 ‘acknowledge the pain of other people.’ Right now I have to do the same thing,” he began.

“The Box” is from Roddy’s debut album Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200.

White Man Wears Blackface to Rob Maryland Bank

Want to get away with a crime? Just blame the black guy.

This was at least the warped logic of one white man who robbed a bank and attempted to obscure his identity not with a mask, but by wearing blackface.

Maryland police believe a white man robbed a PNC Bank on Tuesday (Jan. 28) instead of a black male despite the description the teller gave to police.

“We interviewed the teller, and the teller gave us a description of a black male, five-seven, five-eight, 180 pounds,” Perryville Police Chief Allen W. Miller said.

At the time, they had no reason to doubt the description and sent out an alert for the robber who left the bank in a Ford Focus getaway car.

But when police checked the surveillance footage, everything changed.

“They found out by looking at the glove area, between the glove area and the jacket, this was actually a white male we’re looking for. So initially, the call out was for a black male. It turned out to be a white male in a black face.”

The photo of the suspect in blackface has since gone viral. And though the robber is still at large, Miller says they have received several tips since in the past few days.

“We’re getting calls from all over,” Miller said before noting the stupidity of the robber.

“To cover his face, you know, the blackface and to not cover his hands—not a very smart character, but it’s not a matter of ‘if’ we’re going to catch him. It’s a matter of ‘when’. He’s by no means the smartest bank robber out there.”

Police did not reveal how much the robber stole from the bank. He handed the teller a note, she gave him the money in her drawer and he escaped.

Police believe he is a white male, around 5-foot-five and in his late 20s or early 30s.

There have been several other incidences of white criminals using blackface to commit crimes.

New Couple Alert: Rihanna & A$AP Rocky Really Are Dating, Reportedly Shared an NYC Hotel Suite Earlier This Month

There’s a new Hollywood couple getting hot and heavy and the two aren’t exactly keeping their relationship private.

After being spotted together at several major events over the past few months, it seems Rihanna and A$AP Rocky are officially a thing … just weeks after Rihanna broke up from her billionaire boyfriend Hassan Jameel.

A reporter for The Sun reports they can confirm that Rihanna and Rocky are dating, but the relationship is very casual at the moment.

The two were spotted earlier this month getting close in New York. A source tells the outlet the pair even spent the night in the same NYC hotel suite.

“They shared a hotel suite during that trip in New York,” the source said. “However, Rihanna is reluctant to put a label on it as it’s so soon after Hassan.”

The source continued:

“They’re really enjoying each other’s company and taking things easy as it’s still early days. It’s really casual between them and she’s not thinking about whether there’s a future with Rocky. She’s a newly-single girl having fun.”

Rihanna and Rocky were seen chatting at the 2020 Yams Day Benefit concert earlier this month, they walked the British Fashion Awards red carpet together in December, and RiRi even attended Rocky’s concert in Stockholm.

The pair also have some history. They were reportedly spotting kissing backstage back in 2013 when she appeared in the rapper’s “Fashion Killa” video.

Rocky has also been romantically linked to Kylie Jenner, Kendall Jenner, Chanel Iman, Rita Ora, and Iggy Azalea.

Rihanna just broke up with billionaire Saudi businessman Jameel after three years of dating.

“Their lives were too different and it was hard to maintain a relationship,” a source said of the break-up.

Rick Fox Shares How Rumors He Also Died in Crash With Kobe Bryant Affected His Family: “It Shook A Lot of People in My Life” (VIDEO)

Rick Fox joined several NBA figures last night to remember Kobe Bryant, who, along with his 13-year-old daughter GiGi and seven others, tragically died in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California.

While consoling each other in their grief, Fox broke his silence for the first time regarding early reports and rumors that he had also been on the helicopter at the time of the crash.

“My family went through, in the midst of all this, something that I couldn’t imagine them experiencing,” he said.

Fox also added that one of his daughter’s “greatest fears” is learning through social media that one of her parents had died.

When it was first reported that Bryant had died in a helicopter crash on Sunday (Jan. 26), there was much misinformation being spread on social media, including that Fox—Bryant’s former Lakers teammate—had also died in the tragic accident.

This was not true and, unfortunately, amidst mourning Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter, Fox’s step daughter had to make a statement debunking the rumor.

During Tuesday’s special edition of Inside the NBA, which also included Dwyane Wade, Shaquille O’Neal, and Charles Barkley, Fox shared that while trying to process Bryant’s loss, his phone began blowing up.

But he ignored the calls because he only “[wanted] to be with my friends and my family” at the time.

He finally answered a call from his best friend, King Rice, and that’s when he learned of the rumor.

“I’m seeing King’s number repeatedly going and going and going, and I think he’s worried about me…so I answered…and he just was bawling.

“And I started crying. And he was like, ‘You’re alive!’ And I was like, ‘Well, yeah. Like what do you mean?’ And it was in that moment that my phone just started going, and my mom and my sister and my brother…This has been a lot to process for all of us.”

“I’m glad that’s over with, but it was hard to deal with because it shook a lot of people in my life,” he added.

Reflecting on Bryant, Fox added: “Quite frankly, we were blessed to have had the time we had with Kobe. A city is mourning, a family is mourning, we are all mourning.”

Family Friend Reveals How Vanessa Bryant is Coping With the Devastating Loss of Her Husband & Child: “She Can Hardly Keep It Together”

The world continues to mourn and process the loss of NBA great Kobe Bryant. But no one is grieving more than his longtime wife, Vanessa Bryant, who also lost her second-born child in the fatal helicopter crash.

Seeking privacy during this unimaginably difficult time, Vanessa recently made her social media accounts private and she has not made a public statement since the crash on Sunday (Jan. 26) that left nine people dead including her husband and 13-year-old daughter, Gianna.

However, People is the first to give us an update on how Vanessa is coping. And, as one would imagine, she’s struggling, but also trying to remain strong for her three young daughters.

A source tells the magazine that Vanessa is “devastated.”

“She can hardly keep it together. She can’t finish a sentence without crying. But she is working very hard to pull it together for the other girls. She now has to be the strong one.”

The source said Vanessa is reeling after losing her soulmate and daughter, but has a strong support system.

“Of course, you can never be prepared for this. Despite their ups and downs, [Vanessa and Kobe] were soulmates. She thought of him as her partner for life.”

“[Vanessa] is surrounded by people who love her and love Kobe,” the insider added. “She has a good support system. She is relying on her faith. She is not alone. But she will be grieving this for a very long time.”

Vanessa and Kobe married in 2001; she was 18 and he was 22. They had four daughters together. The widow is now left to raise Natalia, 17, Bianka, 3, and 7-month-old Capri without the help of her life partner.

We join all the others in sending our heartfelt condolences to Vanessa and the girls.

Over 2 Million People, Including Celebs, Support Petition to Change 50-Year-Old NBA Logo to Honor Kobe Bryant

A petition to change the NBA logo to honor Kobe Bryant has gotten the attention of more than two million people, including several notable celebrities.

A Change.org petition created on Sunday shortly after Bryant’s untimely death seeks to have the NBA logo changed to immortalize the retired legendary player. The petition states:

“With the untimely and unexpected passing of the great Kobe Bryant please sign this petition in an attempt to immortalize him forever as the new NBA Logo.”

The current logo has been unchanged for more than 50 years (1969) and features the silhouette of Jerry West, who, like Bryant, also played for the Lakers.

Since being posted, the petition has gone viral and earned over 2 million signatures and counting from fans (as of this posting) with a 3 million signature goal.

Celebrities such as Meek Mill, Usher, Snoop Dogg, and Justin Bieber have shared the petition on social media as well as a mock-up of the potential logo using Bryant’s silhouette.

“Couldn’t be a better time or all around athlete and person for it. #changethelogo,” Usher wrote on Instagram.

“@nba Let’s do what’s right,” Snoop added.

Five-time champion Bryant played in the NBA for 20 years, spending his entire career on the Lakers. He retired in 2016.

At only 41, Bryant died in a tragic helicopter crash on Sunday (Jan. 26), along with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, and seven other passengers.

NBA has not commented on any plans or requests to change its logo. However, commissioner Adam Silver did release a statement regarding Bryant’s death.

“For 20 seasons, Kobe showed us what is possible when remarkable talent blends with an absolute devotion to winning…But he will be remembered most for inspiring people around the world to pick up a basketball and compete to the very best of their ability.

“He was generous with the wisdom he acquired and saw it as his mission to share it with future generations of players, taking special delight in passing down his love of the game to Gianna.”

Kobe Bryant Spotted on a Date With 3-Year-Old Daughter Bianka the Day Before His Tragic Death

Kobe Bryant was a dedicated father to the very end, without even realizing it.

On Saturday night (Jan. 25), just hours before he and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna died along with seven others in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California, Kobe was seen spending quality time with his 3-year-old daughter Bianka.

TMZ Sports obtained exclusive footage of the 41-year-old and his second-to-youngest daughter hanging out at the Fashion Island mall in Newport Beach the night before the tragedy.

The footage shows them playing at the shopping center’s koi pond and walking through the stores.

Via TMZ:

We’re told they looked adorable together — just enjoying each other’s company.

The Bryants were regulars at the mall and other local spots. In other words, it wasn’t unusual to see Kobe around town with his kids.

At that moment, Kobe had no idea that would be the last time his 3-year-old daughter would see him alive, which makes the footage extremely devastating to watch.

Not even 24 hours later, on Sunday morning (Jan. 26), Kobe and Bianka’s older sister Gianna (aka “GiGi”) were tragically killed when the helicopter they were flying in crashed en route to GiGi’s basketball game at Kobe’s Mamba Sports Academy in Thousands Oaks.

GiGi’s team, the Lady Mavericks, were playing in the Mamba Cup basketball tournament and Kobe was expected to coach.

The tournament was later canceled and video footage showed the team in a somber moment mourning Kobe, GiGi and the other passengers’ tragic deaths.

Spending quality time with his four daughters was very important for Kobe, which is why he even started riding in helicopters in the first place.

In a 2018 interview with the Barstool Sports podcast “The Corp With A-Rod and Big Cat,” Bryant said his decision to use helicopters as a method of transportation came from him wanting to be a doting dad while also trying to balance his job as a star player for the Los Angeles Lakers.

As most people know, L.A. traffic is the absolute worst. And with his wife and kids living in Newport Beach, and him working over 40 miles away in Los Angeles, solely relying on ground transportation would make it nearly impossible for him to be an always present dad while also being able to regularly train and attend practices with his teammates.

“Traffic started getting really, really bad, right? And I was sitting in traffic, and I wound up missing, like, a school play because I was sitting in traffic,” he explained.

“I had to figure out a way where I could still train and focus on the craft but still not compromise family time. And so that’s when I looked into helicopters, to be able to get down and back in 15 minutes. And that’s when it started.”

Kobe said riding in a helicopter provided him with the privilege of being able to fly back home to Orange County after practice in time to “get back in the carpool line” to pick his kids up from school

“My wife was like, ‘Listen, I can pick ’em up.’ I’m like, ‘No, no, no. I want to do that,'” he recalled.

“Because, like, you have road trips and times when you don’t see your kids, man,” he added. “So like every chance I get see them and spend time with them, even if it’s 20 minutes in the car, like, I want that. Right? So that would be my routine.”

It’s sad knowing that the same thing that allowed a busy father to spend more time with his children also took him away from them. Even sadder is the fact that one of his children perished along with him.

All nine passengers of the helicopter have since been identified, including Kobe and GiGi, husband-and-wife John and Keri Altobelli, ages 56 and 46, respectively, their daughter, Alyssa, 45-year-old Sarah Chester and her daughter Payton, Christina Mauser, 38, a basketball coach at Gianna’s school, and the pilot, Ara Zobayan, who was 50.

An investigation has been launched to determine what exactly caused the copter to crash, though officials are speculating that heavy fog in the area played a major role in the tragedy.

It’s been said that Zobayan was a very experienced pilot who had flown Kobe and his family (and other celebs like Kylie Jenner) in that same helicopter for years.

It was just two months ago that Kylie rented the Sikorsky helicopter for her niece Dream’s (Rob Kardashian’s daughter) third birthday.

Kylie addressed the crash on Monday (Jan. 27) via her Instagram stories, posting a photo featuring all nine victims along with a poignant message about always keeping your loved ones close.

“Rest in peace..and prayers to these families,” she wrote. “I still can’t believe this. That was the helicopter I would fly on from time to time with that pilot, Ara. He was such a nice man. Hold your loved ones close.”

As of Monday afternoon, officials said they’d only been able to recover three of the nine bodies from the crash site, though they didn’t specify the IDs of the victims who’ve been found.

Officials worked well into Sunday night, but were forced to suspend the search due to darkness and safety concerns, TMZ reported. They continued their search Monday morning, but haven’t released any updates about whether any other remains had been recovered.

Kobe and Gianna Bryant are survived by wife/mom Vanessa, and daughters/sisters Natalia (who just turned 17 years old on January 19th), 3-year-old Bianka, and Baby Capri, who will celebrate her first birthday on June 20th.

LeBron James Tributes Kobe Bryant & “Niece GiGi” in Emotional Instagram Post, Promises to Continue Kobe’s Legacy

In his first public reaction to the tragic and unexpected death of Kobe Bryant, LeBron James has vowed to make carrying on Bryant’s legacy his personal responsibility.

In a lengthy Instagram post, James said he was “heartbroken and devastated” over Bryant and his daughter Gianna’s deaths Sunday (Jan. 26) in a helicopter crash that also killed seven other people.

James was very close with Bryant and his daughter, whom he identified in the emotional post as his “niece GiGi.”

The Los Angeles Lakers star also talked about how he had just spoken to Bryant Sunday morning before the crash, noting that he never “in a million years” thought “that would be the last conversation” they would have.

James continued: “Man I love you big bro. My heart goes to Vanessa and the kids. I promise you I’ll continue your legacy man! You mean so much to us all here especially #LakerNation … and it’s my responsibility to put this sh*t on my back and keep it going!!”

Kobe Bryant and his second-oldest daughter Gianna were among nine people aboard a private helicopter flight Sunday morning that crashed northwest of Los Angeles in Calabasas, California. The group was reportedly on the way to a basketball game Gianna’s team was playing in.

There were no survivors, and the cause of the crash is unknown, but a federal investigation is underway.

The crash came just one day after James surpassed Bryant to become the NBA’s third-highest scorer of all time. Kobe’s last Twitter post was him congratulating LeBron James on the accomplishment.

LeBron and his teammates, as well as Lakers coaches, found out about Kobe’s death while on the team’s private jet flying back to L.A. from their game in Philadelphia the night before.

After the plane landed, a visibly emotional James was seen in news camera footage wiping tears from his eyes as he walked off the tarmac.

50 Cent Says Kobe Bryant’s Death Has Inspired Him to Stop Trolling & Beefing With Everybody: “I Have to Focus”

The tragic and unexpected death of NBA legend Kobe Bryant, along with his 13-year-old daughter GiGi and seven others, has put life into perspective for people all over the world.

Among those personally affected by the sudden loss of Kobe Bryant is 50 Cent, who, in response to the sad news, has publicly made it known that his days of trolling and beefing with others on social media have come to an end.

These days, 50 Cent is more known for his antics on social media than for his music.

He typically uses his Instagram and Twitter accounts (which collectively have over 36 million followers) to air out his grievances with adversaries, make fun of other celebrities, and to help him collect money from folks who he swears owes him thousands of dollars.

Fiddy also uses his massive social media platform to promote his TV shows, like Power, but he’s best known for being the “King of Trolls.”

However, 50 says Kobe’s death has made him rethink his past actions, and, moving forward, he will try his best to be a better person.

After sharing photos and video footage of him chumming it up with Kobe (and Meryl Streep in one particular pic), 50 said the following, on both Twitter and Instagram:

“I feel like I have to achieve what I want in life now after this. I have to focus, I’m not arguing with anyone anymore … I’ll deal with it another way if there’s a problem.”

It remains to be seen if 50 will keep his promise to stop trolling and beefing in the long term, but this is, at least, a very good start.

L.A. Police Slam TMZ for Breaking News of Kobe Bryant’s Death Before Family Could Be Notified

TMZ has come under intense scrutiny from Los Angeles law enforcement officials for being the first media outlet to report on the helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter GiGi on Sunday (Jan. 26) before police were able to notify his family of the tragic news.

According to CNN, L.A. County Sheriff Alex Villanueva slammed TMZ in a press conference while explaining to reporters why officials didn’t immediately confirm the identities of everyone who was aboard the helicopter when it crashed.

“There was wide speculation as to who their identities are, however, it would be entirely inappropriate right now to identify anyone by name until the coroner has made the identification through their very deliberative process, and until they’ve made notifications to next of kin,” Villanueva said.

“It would be extremely disrespectful to understand that your loved ones perished and you learned about it from TMZ. That is just wholly inappropriate. So we’re not going to be going there.”

Without mentioning their name, L.A. County Undersheriff Tim Murakami also took a swipe at TMZ on Twitter.

“I am saddened that I was gathering facts as a media outlet reported the Kobe had passed,” he tweeted. “I understand getting the scoop but please allow us time to make personal notifications to their loved ones. It’s very cold to hear of the loss via media … Breaks my heart.”

TMZ, which is owned by CNN’s parent company Warner Media, has not returned requests for comment.

Being the first media outlet to report the death of a major celebrity is not new territory for TMZ.

In 2009, just four years after their launch in 2005, TMZ was the first to report the death of Michael Jackson while other, more established outlets reported that he’d been rushed to the hospital.

In 2012, TMZ broke the news that Whitney Houston had died in a bathtub the night before the Grammys. And in 2016, TMZ was the first to report on Prince’s death.

Matthew Belloni, editorial director for The Hollywood Reporter, told CNN that when it comes to high-profile deaths, TMZ has an “in” with “the kinds of people who know this information.”

Belloni added: “If TMZ reports that a celebrity has died in Los Angeles County, it is almost always correct. For whatever reason, and you can read into this, their accuracy rate in Los Angeles is very, very good.”

Over the years, TMZ has developed a massive network of tipsters that, according to a 2016 New Yorker profile, includes entertainment lawyers, court officials, and more.

The New Yorker reported that TMZ sometimes pays its tipsters, which is not a common practice in news media.

However, TMZ’s founder, Harvey Levin, has downplayed the methods his website uses to land major scoops. In a 2014 interview with Fox News, Levin was asked straight up: “How does TMZ get this stuff?”

Levin responded: “It’s so funny to me that people ask that question. We’re a news operation. I mean, that’s what you’re supposed to do as a news operation is chase down stories. And it always kind of amuses me when people ask that question. Isn’t that what we’re supposed to be doing? I mean, that is the job.”

Even though TMZ has a very good track record of celebrity-related scoops (except for that one time they said Lil Wayne was on his deathbed and being read his last rites), a number of established news organizations refuse to report on their stories before independently verifying the information for themselves.

THR’s Matthew Belloni told CNN when TMZ broke the news about Kobe Bryant’s death, he “thought it was probably right.”

That being said, Belloni added: “We always verify and don’t take them at face value. But when I saw that it was TMZ reporting a death in Los Angeles County of a very prominent person, I thought it’s probably right.”

The Wrap’s CEO Sharon Waxman expressed a similar sentiment in 2016 for a Washington Post article about TMZ’s history and track record.

“When they report something, it makes me think they’re probably right, but it might be premature or incomplete,” Waxman said. “Maybe someone had a heart attack, but, no, he didn’t die. That they had much of the story, but not all of the story.”

#BlackMambaForever: Remembering a Legend After a Tragic Death

On April 13th of 2016, the Los Angeles Laker Kobe Bryant stepped to the free-throw line in the Staples Center.

They held a one-point lead over the Utah Jazz with just under fifteen seconds left in regulation. The arena was filled with a deafening cheer of “MVP! MVP! MVP!”

The Black Mamba arrived at the line, and he proceeded to sink both free throws, solidifying the Lakers’ victory and scoring his fifty-ninth and sixtieth point of the night consecutively. It was the last time he’d play in an NBA game.

On January 26th of 2020, the NBA community and the world at large received the shocking news that Kobe Bryant, at 41 years old, passed away along with his 13-year-old daughter, Giana, as well as 7 others in a tragic helicopter crash outside of Calabasas, CA.

It’s rare for a single moment to be felt so universally and simultaneously across the globe. Within moments of the news breaking, the calls and texts starting coming in asking if I’d heard the news.

Strangers were talking to each other about the incident in grocery stores and at gas stations. The sentiment was the same for everyone: disbelief, confusion, and ultimately, sadness.

It’s not surprising that Kobe Bryant’s passing is as impactful as it is, because the impact that he had on the sport of basketball was just as powerful.

His historic career began with him needing his parents to co-sign his NBA contract because he was only a teenager. But over the next twenty years, he rose from an overseas prospect to NBA legend through his unparalleled scoring prowess and undaunting dedication to constantly be the hardest working player in the locker room.

He was a five-time NBA champion, eleven-time All-NBA first-team selection, NBA MVP, two-time Finals MVP, 18-time All-Star, four-time All-Star MVP, two-time Olympic gold medalist, and a rare player to spend his entire career with the same team.

In short, he was a winner. He was someone who dominated headlines across the globe, and rightfully so. Kobe Bryant was an inspiration for the League’s most influential players today as well as an evolution of what came before him:

As of the time of this writing, someone who has not spoken up is LeBron James. He was Kobe Bryant’s close friend and a man who, just the night before, vaulted the legend from number 4 to 3 on the NBA’s all-time scoring list.

It’s no surprise that Kobe Bryant has had such a big impact on today’s NBA. Whereas some players’ careers are reduced down to a single moment, the Black Mamba’s excellence extends over twenty years, with so many memorable moments filling his tenure that it’s hard to pinpoint his one greatest.

Hitting two clutch free throws in the closing minutes of a game against Golden State after tearing his Achilles tendon.

His two clutch shots to send the game into overtime and ultimately win it against the Portland Trailblazers to advance in the playoffs.

Scoring 62 points in just three quarters of play against the Mavericks.

And, of course, that 81-point game, the second-most all-time scoring in a single game behind only Wilt Chamberlain’s 100 point night.

One of the driving factors behind his unbridled success was his unparalleled work ethic. There are countless stories of how Kobe Bryant was always pushing his boundaries both mentally and physically. He didn’t just open up the gym, he was the last one to leave.

He demanded greatness from himself, always. But he also demanded the same from his teammates. If he thought you were slacking, faking an injury, or just not good enough, he wouldn’t hesitate to let you know.

His greatness wasn’t just limited to his on the court action, though. After retirement, when most people slow down, Bryant got involved in media production.

For anyone familiar with his basketball work ethic and successes, it’s no surprise that he won an Oscar Award for his animated short film, Dear Basketball. Even billionaires have been surprised and intrigued by his determination and work ethic.

While there are always new stars that find their way into the NBA, we may never see another player as electrifying to watch and (I’m only guessing) as terrifying to play against as Kobe Bryant. Undoubtedly, he is leaving a legacy that extends far beyond basketball.

After those two free throws almost four years ago—the ones that gave him 60 points, the most by any player in their final NBA game—Kobe Bryant addressed the filled stands at the Staples Center.

The words he spoke that night seem appropriate for how many people feel about their relationship with him as well as how to move forward with this devastatingly heartbreaking news.

“This has been absolutely beautiful you guys. I can’t believe it’s come to an end. You guys will always be in my heart, and I sincerely, sincerely appreciate it. No words can describe how I feel about you guys. Thank you, thank you. From the bottom of my heart, I love you guys.”

Rest in peace, Mamba.
