Kanye West Breaks Down Crying During BBC Radio Interview

Kanye West’s interview on Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio 1 show Friday (Feb 27) proves Kanye isn’t just the arrogant asshole people think he is.

While speaking on the death of his friend/mentor fashion professor Louise Wilson, Kanye broke down crying and had to temporarily leave the room.

Before breaking down, Kanye said the last time he saw Wilson they had dinner together at his favorite restaurant in London and she gave him some wise words of advice. Kanye believes Wilson knew she was going to die at the moment in time.

“I went to Louise Wilson’s memorial. One of the greatest fashion instructors of all time. And I’m talking about of all timers. Louise Wilson was the baddest professor of all time of any fashion school ever. Notorious for not letting people stop at a seven or an eight…pushing people to a twelve.

“The last time I saw her we had dinner at Hakkasan, which is my favorite restaurant in London. And I think she knew that she was going to pass, and she just wanted to give me some words of advice moving forward, and she was asking me about my daughter, asked me about my wife…and she said, you know, ‘So many students, they don’t give it their all, and the problem is, soon as they do anything halfway good when they’re 2-years-old, 3-years-old, their parents clap.’

(Zane claps)

“Exactly. They clap. And she just looked at me and she said, ‘Kanye, don’t clap.’ I didn’t know we were going to lose her…and she told me, she said, you know, ‘Thank you for the times where I came to performances and this has like really meant a lot to me. You know she would…’

At that point, Kanye covered his face and broke down into tears. Zane Lowe comforted the rapper and gave him a minute to himself.  “You wanna take some time?” Zane asked, patting the rapper on his back.

When West returned, he smiled and said, “That’s never happened to me in an interview before” and assured Lowe that he was “OK.”

The Cast of VH1’s “Black Ink Crew” Have Real Names

Believe it or not, the cast of VH1’s hit reality show “Black Ink Crew” really do have real government names.

What, you really thought people named their kids Ceaser, Dutchess, Puma and O’Sh*t? Besides, “Ceaser” isn’t even spelled right!

Plus, we highly doubt O’Sh*t uses that name when he’s in court, and “Sky” isn’t the name she used when she tried to obtain that passport either.

Just like celebrities, some musicians and your favorite rappers, the stars of “Black Ink Crew” opted for catchier monikers either to stand out or mask their real identity.

But after two seasons, now everyone wants to know: WHAT ARE THE REAL NAMES OF THE CAST OF BLACK INK CREW?

Click through to the next page to find out!

Aww: Look at Lil Wayne & Lauren London’s Son Cameron Carter!

Anyone who knows Lil Wayne’s life knows that the man has four children with four different women — his ex-wife Antonia “Toya” Wright, Nivea, Lauren London and a woman named Sarah Vivian. It’s not a secret.

We just saw Reginae (his daughter with “Toya”) all over MTV when they recently revived “My Super Sweet 16” for her huge 16th birthday celebration, and we randomly see his son with Sarah (Dwayne Carter II), but the kids we don’t see too often are the two sons he shares with Nivea and Lauren London, respectively.

Nearly four years ago, we shared a photo of his son with Lauren London — Cameron Carter — and recently, the rapper tweeted a more recent photo of him and Cameron spending some quality father-son time together.

Cam’s mom Lauren London even approved:

Wayne quickly deleted the adorable image from his his Twitter page, but not before fans downloaded it and reposted it all over the Internet.

Lil Wayne Says He & Birdman Aren’t on Speaking Terms: “I Have No Words”

Lil Wayne has finally broken his silence on his beef with his rap mentor and surrogate father Bryan “Birdman” Williams, revealing that the two are no longer on speaking terms.

Speaking publicly for the first time on his $51 million legal battle against Cash Money over Wayne’s long-awaited album ‘Tha Carter V,’ Weezy told Rolling Stone in an exclusive interview that he has “no words” with Birdman, and regarding the situation, he’s “super numb to it, to tell you the truth.”

As for the album itself, Weezy confirmed (once again) that the project is 100% finished and ready to be released, but it’s unlikely that we’ll be able to listen to it any day soon.

“Cake baked, icing on top, name on top, candles lit,” he said. “I would have released it yesterday if I could. But it’s a dead subject right now. It’s a jewel in the safe. It’s that stash-house money.”

Instead, he’s choosing to focus his attention on ‘The Free Weezy Album,’ which he guarantees will be “something dope.”

Let’s hope so, because he sure could use some redemption after Sorry 4 The Wait 2.’

New Couple Alert: K. Michelle & Nicki Minaj’s Ex Boyfriend Safaree Samuels

K. Michelle and all that azz is helping Safaree Samuels get over his ex Nicki Minaj.

Sources close to K. Michelle tell TMZ that she and Safaree have been talking over the phone and texting every night.

K. Michelle and Safaree were also spotted in VIP together at Club Stage in NYC on Valentine’s Day. And the following week Safaree sent K a bouquet of sunflowers.

Sources say things “aren’t official” between the two … but from the looks of it, they could get serious.

Since her big public break-up with Safaree at the end of 2014, Nicki Minaj has moved on with MMG rapper Meek Mill and recently revealed that he will be part of her upcoming “The Pinkprint Tour”

Also … check out this video K. Michelle posted on Instagram of her twerking to one of Safaree’s songs below:

Squashed Beef: Meek Mill & Wale Pictured Hanging Out in the Studio Together

With all this beefing going on in Hip Hop lately — Birdman vs. Lil Wayne, Drake vs. Chris Brown and Tyga, Amber Rose vs. Khloe Kardashian, Azealia Banks vs. EVERYBODY — it’s a breath of fresh air to see Maybach Music artists Meek Mill and Wale photographed together showing good vibes in the studio.

“Late night cook up,” Wale captioned a photo of him and Meek on Instagram.

https://instagram.com/p/zcGi0ltOw1/

If you can recall, the two rap stars fell out last July after Meek called Wale out on Twitter for not promoting his new album at the time ‘Dreams Worth More Than Money’ and accused Wale of hating on him for some time.

Now it looks like the labelmates have since patched things up and are at least on good terms enough to be pictured together in the studio. Maybe we can expect some new music soon?

Why Was John Travolta Being So Weird with Women at the 2015 Oscars?

You know that creepy uncle that shows up to the family barbecues being all weird and touchy feely with the ladies (and maybe the guys too when no one is looking)?

That was John Travolta Sunday night (Feb 22) at the 2015 Oscars. The man just could not keep his hands to himself.

It started with Scarlett Johansson on the red carpet. As she was posing for photos, Creepy Uncle John slinked up behind her and planted a light kiss on her cheek. You can almost feel the awkwardness permeating from the picture just by looking at it.

After that, John was even more awkward during the live telecast when he grabbed Idina Menzel’s chin in a bit that referenced Travolta screwing up the pronunciation of Menzel’s name at last year’s Academy Awards. (He introduced her as “Adele Dazeem.”)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csZTxfF9EcU

“Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the stage my very dear friend, Glom Gazingo,” the Frozen singer and Tony Award winner joked while Travolta made his way to the stage.

“I deserve that,” John responded, before grabbing Idina’s face by the chin and properly pronouncing her name.

The whole thing was cringeworthy and Menzel looked so uncomfortable, but according to Travolta’s rep, it was planned.

“It was rehearsed in total,” the rep clarified to Us Weekly. “John Travolta loved working with Idina Menzel. John had a great time at the Oscars because his wife, Kelly Preston, and his daughter, Ella, were in attendance with him.”

But of course John’s rep would say that. Another source told E! News that the incident was NOT rehearsed. “John started doing it backstage right before Idina went on to introduce him. It was so weird,” the source said, which sounds way more believable.

Meanwhile, a body language expert analyzed both the Scarlett Johansson and Idina Menzel incidents and concluded that we shouldn’t feel sorry for either of them and reserve our sorrow for John Travolta, who clearly embarrassed himself.

“Greeting rituals of any kind are all about status and power displays and perhaps the veteran film star thought a little faux-sexual fooling about might actually receive a grateful and complimentary reception from the two women,” Judi James, author of The Body Language Bible, told the UK’s Independent. “Unfortunately both took on the facial expressions of someone having their leg humped by an over-keen puppy, creating the perfect storm in terms of body language poses.”

James added, “Grabbing Johansson might have worked had she screamed with delight at the surprise intervention. But instead she turns her head away as he tries to plant a kiss on her cheek and then she lowers him even further by staring deadpan into the camera.”

James continued, “Travolta’s body language with Menzel is rather more bizarre as he seems to persist in his hilarity despite the fact that her signals are suggesting he should stop. This was presumably based on a shared joke about forgetting her name but his chin-grasp suggests a determination to hold her in the pose he wants to perform, complete with eye contact and romantic-looking smiles.

“Unlike Johansson, Menzel is smiling as she pulls away but her teeth are clenched, suggesting a polite social rictus rather than a grin of shared fun and then breaking away to clap suggests she wants the audience to help her out of the predicament.”

So the question remains: Why was John Travolta being so weird with women at the 2015 Oscars? The world may never know.

Drake Responds to Chris Brown with His Usual Passive Aggressiveness

As expected, Drake has passive aggressively responded to Chris Brown’s remarks about him, by indirectly mentioning his fellow frozen waffle colored entertainer in a song.

During his appearance on “The Breakfast Club” Monday morning (Feb 23), Brown called Drake a “corny singing rapper” and insisted that the two are not friends.

Days before that, in a joint Hot 97 interview with Tyga, the singer mocked Drake’s voice after saying “I can’t keep making these motherf**kers famous” when asked about the Young Money frontman.

Apparently Drizzy caught wind of the Hot 97 interview and fired back at Breezy during his performance in Auckland, New Zealand Monday night. (Note: New Zealand is more than 12 hours ahead of the Eastern U.S. so Monday night for them was late Sunday night/early Monday morning for us — before the Breakfast Club interview).

“R&B n**gas that I gotta act like I like / But my actin’ days are over, f**k them n**gas for life, boy.” Drake rapped, slightly changing the lyrics to his “Energy” track off his recently released surprise mixtape ‘If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late.’

Not surprisingly, Brown and Drake’s reignited beef comes not too long after Drake blasted Tyga for dating Kylie Jenner on his “6 PM in New York” song.

Tyga responded telling Drake to “pull up on him” and claimed that Drake is still “ducking the fade from Brown” (meaning Drake has been running from getting an azz-whooping from Chris).

We guess Tyga wasn’t kidding about that after all.

Peep the video of Drake indirectly dissing Breezy — and still ducking the fade — below:

Chris Brown Called Drake a “Corny Singing Rapper” on the Breakfast Club

If you thought Chris Brown and Drake had finally buried the hatchet and moved past their differences … think again!

Chris stopped by “The Breakfast Club” Monday morning (Feb 23) to promote his new ‘Fan of a Fan’ joint album with Tyga, and in the interview, he also spoke on how he and Drake have never been on good terms, despite appearing in a skit at the ESPYs and being photographed in the studio together.

Chris made it crystal clear that he and Drake are NOT friends and he also called the OVO rapper a “corn singing rapper.” Just in case you didn’t understand him when he said they’re not friends.

Chris also spoke on Rihanna’s alleged relationship with Leonardo DiCaprio, wanting to get Rihanna and Karrueche Tran both pregnant (…yeah…), and becoming good friends with Kanye West over the past few months.

#DontPanic: Khloe Kardashian & Amber Rose Trade Insults On Twitter Over Kylie Jenner Allegedly Dating Tyga

Things got pretty nasty on Twitter between Amber Rose and Khloe Kardashian after the two engaged in a strong war of words with each other. The takeaway? #DontPanic.

Amber and Khloe’s Twitter feud apparently started after Rose brought up Khloe’s little sister Kylie Jenner in an interview with the Breakfast Club.

She called the 17-year-old a “baby” and took shots at the teen’s infamous alleged “relationship” with the 25-year-old rapper Tyga, who just so happens to have a kid with Amber’s (former?) BFF Blac Chyna, who he left to be with a teenager who just so happens to be closely related to a Kardashian. Small world, right?

“She’s a baby. She needs to go to bed at 7 o’clock and relax,” Rose said in reference to Jenner. “That’s ridiculous. [Tyga] should be ashamed of himself. For sure. He has a beautiful woman and a baby and left that for a 16-year-old who just turned 17.”

Amber also said she doesn’t necessarily hate the Kardashians, she just doesn’t respect them and called them “fake.” Nothing too harmful, right? Ha. Wrong.

After catching wind of Amber’s comments about her sister and her family, Khloe hopped on Twitter and slammed Kanye’s ex and basically called her out for being a former stripper.

She paused for a bit. Then continued:

She took another short break. Then added:

Of course Amber clapped back, and that’s when the Twitter war began:

And that’s how “#DontPanic” has now become a thing on Twitter (in case you didn’t already know).

Khloe responded:

Khloe then waved a flag of defeat by not only acknowledging the “#DontPanic” tweet, but cowardly deleted her acknowledgement of said tweet, forcing us to provide you with a screenshot instead of the actual message:

khloe-kardashian-dont-panic-tweet

This is the part where Amber shrugs her shoulders like Kanye and retreats, but not really, because she apparently had a stash of memes saved up for this very moment:

https://instagram.com/p/zLRBp8kqyy/

Even Reggie Bush somehow got involved:

And Amber ended the war — long after Khloe waved her white flag, mind you — with this:

https://instagram.com/p/zL3JEZkq2V/

If you didn’t catch it, Amber definitely threw shade at Khloe’s paternity issues, notably that old rumor that Robert Kardashian Sr. isn’t her real father because OJ Simpson is (never heard that one? you just did).

Also: #DontPanic has to be one of the funniest hashtags ever and Amber Rose has this Twitter/social media war thing down to a science. You go girl.

“Unretouched” Photos of Beyoncé Leaked Online and the Internet Went Nuts

Someone is out here trying to assassinate Beyoncé’s character and the Beyhive ain’t having it.

“Unretouched” photos of the “***Flawless” singer leaked online via a Beyoncé fan site known as The Beyoncé World, and the Internet pretty much had a major meltdown over it.

The close-up images are from a 2013 L’Oréal campaign and are supposed to show Beyoncé in a bad light, but we honestly don’t see what the big deal is.

If we doused your face in make-up and took close-up pictures of you using a high-powered DSLR camera, your raw images would look just like that … or dare we say … worse.

Also, how do we know these “unretouched” photos are the real deal anyhow? Someone tried to pull that mess with Justin Bieber and it turned out they were fake.

Beyoncé’s legion of fans, known as the Beyhive, somehow convinced The Beyoncé World to remove the 200+ images from their site within an hour of them being posted, but it was too late because the damage had already been done.

From The Beyoncé World:

Due to the disdain of the BeyHive, we have removed the photos. We don’t want to cause any drama, nor do we wish to start fan wars. Some of the things we have seen posted were just horrible, and we don’t want any parts of it. We were just posting the photos to share the fact that our queen is naturally beautiful, at the same time she is just a regular woman.

Here are some of the photos (via Defamer):

Watch: Lil Wayne’s Daughter Reginae Carter’s “My Super Sweet 16” MTV Special

Lil Wayne’s only daughter Reginae Carter — who he shares with his ex-wife Toya Wright — turned 16 years old last November and she was treated like a superstar at her birthday party in Atlanta, which was recorded for a special episode of MTV’s “My Super Sweet 16” that aired Monday (Feb 16).

Throughout the episode, Reginae lets it be known that she can have whatever she wants and “there is no budget” because her daddy said so.

“It’s my sweet 16 and my dad’s about to spend some money, baby!” she exclaimed on the show. “I’m daddy’s little girl and he showers me with anything I want,” she said. “I’m gonna shut Atlanta down.”

And that’s exactly what she did with a huge winter white party that included four outfit changes and a surprise performance by Nicki Minaj, who arrived just in the nick of time. “Just when I thought I knew everything about this party, that’s when I see Nicki,” Reginae said. “Oh my gosh!”

The party also featured a performance from Hip Hop duo Rae Sremmurd and Reginae, who is an up and coming artist, also sang her debut single “Mind Going Crazy.” She arrived to the shindig in a horse-drawn carriage and wore a long glitzy gown for her first outfit.

To top everything off, Nae was gifted with not just one, but TWO brand new cars: a red BMW and a Ferrari GTO. “I got the Ferrari. Two cars?” she said. “What! I’m killing it. This will make history.”‘

Nick Gordon “Desperately” Wants To See Bobbi Kristina & Her Family Isn’t Having It

Nick Gordon is desperately trying to see Bobbi Kristina.

According to TMZ, Nick is using his lawyer to reach out to the Brown family in order to get permission to visit Bobbi Kristina.

Since Bobbi Kristina has been hospitalized from drowning, Gordon has been blocked by Bobbi Kristina’s family from seeing her. Several relatives have also threatened to “lay hands” on Gordon if he comes to the hospital.

Nick’s lawyer Randall Kessler released the following statement on his behalf:

“[Nick] has respected the family’s wishes and for that reason alone has not returned to the hospital and risked a public confrontation. He desperately wants to be with the one he loves and continues to hope that his request will be granted.”

Right now things aren’t looking good for Bobbi Kristina. Doctors are saying her organs are shutting down and she doesn’t have much longer to live, with or without life support.

So it’s quite understandable why Nick wants to see her, but the odds are zero to none considering Nick is being targeted for being involved in Bobbi Kristina’s drowning. Police launched a criminal investigation after injuries were found on her body.

Ray J’s Girlfriend Princess Love Arrested for Beating Him Up, Breaking His Ribs

Ray J’s love life took a major blow last week in New Orleans.

According to TMZ, the “Love and Hip Hop: Hollywood” star was beaten badly by his girlfriend Princess Love at the hotel they were staying in.

Things got so bad that Ray ended up with several cracked ribs, a busted lip and a torn ACL. (WTF??)

Via TMZ:

Law enforcement tells us, it happened last Wednesday, after Ray J returned to his hotel after spending the night with TV producers at a strip joint. Ray — who stars in “Love and Hip Hop: Hollywood” with Princess Love — told cops Princess went ballistic and attacked him, cracking several ribs, busting his lip open and tearing his ACL.

Someone in the hotel told cops they heard Princess scream, “I’m gonna kill you.”

We’re told Ray J ran out of the room and a hotel security guy saw him bleeding and called 911. We’re told Princess was arrested and booked for domestic abuse and battery.

And sources say Ray J himself bailed her out and paid $10K for her lawyer.

If you can recall last season on the show, Princess threw a glass of wine on Ray J during a heated argument and as he tried to defend himself he ended up pushing her in a nearby pool.

So this comes as no big surprise that the two got into a physical altercation, but damn who knew Princess had enough power to beat a grown man’s AZZ?!?!

And top it all off, Ray J bails her out hours later. If anything he should have been filing a restraining order, SMH.

Drake Is “Still A Bitch,” According To Tyga

Tyga sounds like he really wants to lay hands on Drake like a preacher during a baptism.

In the past, Tyga has been very vocal about his dislike for Drake and was quoted last year in a Vibe interview calling the OVO rapper “fake.” His words verbatim:

“I don’t like Drake as a person. He’s just fake to me. I like his music; you know what I’m saying? I think his music is good, but we’re all different people. We were forced together and it was kinda’ like we were forcing relationships together.”

But their beef didn’t stop just there. With both rappers subliminally firing shots at each other on tracks like “6 God” and “Make It Work,” Drake liking Tyga’s baby mama Blac Chyna’s pics on Instagram, and then Drake later going on to post a pic of Kylie Jenner (who is rumored to be Tyga’s new girlfriend), the two Young Money artists have been going at each other’s necks non-stop for some time now.

And to add more fuel to the fire … Drake recently dissed Tyga and called him out on his relationship with Kylie Jenner on “6 PM in New York” — a track off his new mixtape If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late.’

On the track, Drake raps:

I heard a lil lil homie talking reckless in Vibe / Quite a platform you chose, you shoulda kept it inside

Oh you tried, it’s so childish calling my name on the world stage / You need to act your age and not your girl’s age.

Note: Kylie Jenner is only 17, so Drizzy really went hard on this one.

Tyga quickly caught wind of Drake’s remarks and took to Twitter to respond, saying the rapper is “still a bitch” (as if he’s always been a bitch?) and he’s been “ducking the fade from Brown,” likely referring to Chris Brown.

@Drake u still a bitch. All that sneak dissing is weak. Just pull up. I know where u live and u know my address.. U been ducking the fade from Brown.

tyga-drake-bitch-tweet

He later deleted the tweet, but during a performance posted on WorldstarHipHop that appears to have happened in the past few days, Tyga switched up the lines on his “Make It Work” track and rapped:

“Aubrey never was my homie. All these b*tches know you’re corny n*gga.”

Peep the footage below:

Sh*t is getting real in camp YMCMB.

Music Video: Omarion ft. Chris Brown Jhene Aiko – “Post To Be”

Omarion’s new music video for his “Post To Be” single is a breath of fresh air.

There isn’t too much going on in the black-and-white clip — which features Chris Brown and Jhené Aiko — but all three singers seem to have great chemistry, which is something a lot of videos lack these days.

Omarion and Breezy kill it with some fancy dance moves, while Jhené holds it down for the ladies.

Afroman Arrested & Charged After Punching Female Fan in the Face in the Middle of a Concert

What has Afroman been up to lately? Oh, nothing too much. Just losing his sh*t and punching random women square in the face in the middle of concerts for no reason at all.

Tuesday night (Feb 17), Afroman was performing at Kress Live nightclub in Beloxi, Mississippi when an overzealous fan hopped on stage to dance with the singing rapper, most famous for his song “Because I Got High.”

afroman-punch-gif
Gif via: Reddit

Everything was all peaches and cream up until Afroman decided to lay a strong haymaker to the poor girl’s face, immediately knocking her down to the ground, and Afroman kept performing as if he hadn’t just literally punched a woman in the face.

The whole thing was captured on video, which can be seen here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mP3Pl-bJTc4

Witnesses said the girl was bleeding and crying, and cops shut the show down and arrested Afroman, whose real name is Joseph Edgar Foreman.

Afroman’s rep told TMZ that he had no idea whether the fan was male or female, “he just reacted to someone being on stage.”

The rep added that there wasn’t enough security at the venue to keep fans off the stage and this is totally out of character for Afroman.

afroman-mugshot

The one-hit wonder was booked for assault charges and was later later released after posting $330 bond.

Regarding Afroman’s claims of there being a lack of security, the club’s owner, Chase Taylor, told Mississippi news station WLOX that his people did their jobs properly.

“We had roughly 12-15 security guards in a crowd of 500 people,” Taylor said. “Kress Live does not condone this type of behavior. We like to keep a safe environment, and we addressed the situation the best way we could.”

Drake Pulled A Beyoncé & Released A Surprise Album Called “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late”

Guess it’s safe to start calling Drake the “Beyoncé of Hip Hop.”

Ripping a page right out of Queen B’s playbook, Drake surprised his fans with the release of an unannounced album on iTunes late Thursday night (Feb 12).

drake-if-youre-reading-this-its-too-late-album-cover

The 17-track project, titled ‘If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late,’ features appearances from Lil Wayne, Travi$ Scott and his own OVO Sounds artist Party Next Door.

The surprise album’s release comes just hours after he released a 15-minute arthouse film called “Jungle,” which saw Drizzy and his OVO crew traipsing through the streets of Toronto.

“If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late” comes nearly six years ago to the day that Drake released the mixtape that launched his career: 2009’s ‘So Far So Gone.’

New Report Details 4,000 Lynchings in American South, More Than Previously Known

According to a newly released report by the Alabama-based Equal Justice Initiative, between the end of the Civil War and World War II (more specifically the years between 1877 and 1950), nearly 4,000 Black people were lynched in the American South — a number that is almost 1,000 more than what was previously known.

The report, titled “Lynching in America: Confronting the Legacy of Racial Terror,” took at least half a decade of research to complete, and it claims that lynchings were part of a system of racial terror designed to subjugate Black people.

EJI founder Bryan Stevenson spoke with the New York Times about his project to build memorial markers in honor of the thousands of African Americans who were lynched in the South between the aforementioned years:

The process is intended, Mr. Stevenson said, to force people to reckon with the narrative through-line of the country’s vicious racial history, rather than thinking of that history in a short-range, piecemeal way.

“Lynching and the terror era shaped the geography, politics, economics and social characteristics of being black in America during the 20th century,” Mr. Stevenson said, arguing that many participants in the great migration from the South should be thought of as refugees fleeing terrorism rather than people simply seeking work.

According to EJI’s report, the lynchings resulted in millions of Black people being forced to flee the South, which has in turn shaped the geography of black people in America today.

Black people didn’t end up in places like New York, California, Chicago, Detroit, and other non-Southern states and cities because they were seeking opportunities, but due to them fearing being attacked and lynched if they remained in the Jim Crow South.

EJI staff spent thousands of hours over a four-year period researching and documenting where the lynchings actually occurred in the 12 most active lynching states in America: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.

The report distinguishes “racial terror lynchings” from hangings and mob violence that were the direct result of some criminal trial process or that were committed against non-minorities without the threat of terror.

The EJI’s detailed report also deeply examines specific lynching cases, particularly the disturbing practice of public lynchings, where spectators were given body parts of the dead as souvenirs while vendors sold food and drinks and printed postcards featuring photos of the lynching.

“Large crowds of white people, often numbering in the thousands and including elected officials and prominent citizens, gathered to witness pre-planned, heinous killings that featured prolonged torture, mutilation, dismemberment, and/or burning of the victim.

“White press justified and promoted these carnival-like events, with vendors selling food, printers producing postcards featuring photographs of the lynching and corpse, and the victim’s body parts collected as souvenirs.

“These killings were bold, public acts that implicated the entire community and sent a message that African-Americans were sub-human, their subjugation was to be achieved through any means necessary, and whites who carried out lynchings would face no legal repercussions.”

One example in the report tells the story of Luther Holbert, who was accused of killing a local white landowner in 1904. A mob of angry white people captured Holbert and a Black woman believed to be his wife and they were taken to Doddsville, Mississippi to be lynched before hundreds of white spectators.

“Both victims were tied to a tree and forced to hold out their hands while members of the mob methodically chopped off their fingers and distributed them as souvenirs.

“Next, their ears were cut off. Mr. Holbert was then beaten so severely that his skull was fractured and one of his eyes was left hanging from its socket.

“Members of the mob used a large corkscrew to bore holes into the victims’ bodies and pull out large chunks of ‘quivering flesh,’ after which both victims were thrown onto a raging fire and burned.

“The white men, women, and children present watched the horrific murders while enjoying deviled eggs, lemonade, and whiskey in a picnic-like atmosphere.”

historical-marker-slave-trade-alabama

In 2013, the EJI successfully placed three historical markers in Montgomery, Alabama (like the one here) in an effort to give context to the city’s involvement in the domestic slave trade, a move that — as one would imagine — was not fully supported by the Montgomery and Alabama governments.

The group hopes that publicly marking and memorializing lynching sites will “end the silence and inaction” and help with America’s recovery process.

Teen Arrested for Murder After Snapchat Selfie with Victim’s Body

A teenager from Pennsylvania is facing murder charges after he allegedly shot his classmate in the face and posed for a “selfie” with the teen’s dead body, which he shared on the popular photo messaging app Snapchat.

16-year-old Maxwell Marion Morton (pictured on the left), a football player at Jeanette High School, reportedly confessed to police in the killing of Ryan Mangan (pictured right), also 16, who was found dead by his mother in their home on February 4th.

Morton was arrested on February 6th after police received a photo showing Morton posing with Mangan’s body, which was slumped over in a chair with a single gunshot wound to the face.

The day after Mangan’s mother found his body, the mother of one of Morton’s friends tipped police off about the photo, which her son had received from Morton on Snapchat.

Snapchat is a messaging app popular with teens, but unlike its social media counterparts (such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) anything that’s posted is deleted after a few seconds. Instinctively, Morton’s friend took a screenshot of the image before Snapchat’s servers deleted it.

The friend’s mother also said the boy received a text message from Morton saying, “Ryan was not the last one” and the gruesome Snapchat photo had Maxwell’s name written across it in capital letters, CBS Pittsburgh reported.

Investigators searched Morton’s home and found a 9-mm handgun in his basement that matched a spent shell casing found at the scene of the murder, according to reports.
