For this week’s YouTube Friday, we have two sisters who have been making some splashes around the popular video-sharing site.
Born to Nigerian parents, Ivana (18) and Jessica (17) Nwokike grew up in the African country until the ages of seven and nine. Growing up, both Ivana and Jessica were surrounded by music whether it be Elton John or Michael Jackson. They both recall watching music videos and recreating the dance moves from big acts like the Spice Girls, Britney Spears and TLC back in the day, and watching tapes from the singers their mom brought to Nigeria. “We definitely grew up singing, and we don’t remember a time we weren’t trying to sing,” the ladies told Gossip On This.
Their influences include Destiny’s Child, Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, and the rest of the “diva” singers. But they also draw inspiration from British soul singers like Amy Winehouse, Duffy, Adele, and today’s newer artists: Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, and Ne-Yo. To say that their harmonies are “on point” would be an understatement. So much that their upload views have exceeded 5.2 million. The duo has decided to take up the name VanJess and just in case you’re wondering, Ivana wears glasses and Jessica is usually on the left in their latest clips.
Follow the break for videos from VanJess and our short exclusive interview with the talented sisters!

Most of you probably saw Taylor Swift’s recent performance with Stevie Nicks at this year’s Grammys (if not, peep it HERE) and you probably saw how mediocre and pitchy Taylor’s vocals were. Well since then, there has been a bunch of negative chatter about the terribly put together performance and now Taylor’s label boss Scott Borchetta, CEO of Big Machine Records has come to her defense:
“Maybe she’s not the best technical singer,” he began in comments to The Tennessean, “but she’s probably the best emotional singer because everybody else who gets up there and is technically perfect, people don’t seem to want more of it.”
He also went on to say this about her voice:
“I think (the critics) are missing the whole voice of a generation that is happening right in front of them,” he told the paper. “This is not ‘American Idol.’ This is not a competition of getting up and seeing who can sing the highest note. This is about a true artist and writer and communicator. It’s not about that technically perfect performance.”
Hmmm. It’s great to see Taylor Swift’s label boss coming to her defense like captain save a hoe but there’s really no excuse for Taylor’s awful performance. And she definitely deserve that “Album of the Year” Award. Just thought we’d throw that out there…

Uh oh! Looks like Jay-Z got played. Many of you might remember when it was publicly announced that Jay-Z was in the process of building his very own hotel called “J Hotel” in partnership with Charlie Blaichman and Abe Shnay of SK Development and CB Developers. The hotel was set to be built on property in New York City at 510 West 22nd St.
But since the economy tanked, the project has been put on hold. Since then Jay and his company has been trying to sell it back to investment firm Highland Capital Management, but they have bnen procrastinating in getting the deal done, which has cost Jay over a million dollars in interest. Now, the Jigga man has filed a lawsuit against the company for $3.7 million.
“This action arises out of the efforts by defendants to bleed additional funds from the plaintiff,” the rapper’s lawyers stated in legal documents.
Cold game. This is what the Business World is all about. Poor Jay. Alot of people wanted to see him build this hotel. Maybe next time.

Six-year-old Jasmina Anema lost her year-long battle against a very fatal form of leukemia and died at NYU Langone Medical Center last Wednesday evening (Jan 27). She was surrounded by her mother and close family/friends.
“She was an incredible fighter to the end,” said her godmother, Mariana Verkerk. “Her attitude was always incredibly positive. She fought her battle so hard, and unfortunately she didn’t win it.” Thea Anema, Jasmina’s mom, was too devastated to speak. Through a friend, she described her daughter as “an unbelievable child – a true miracle who touched so many people in her short life.”
Suffering from fever and shortness of breath, Jasmina was admitted to the hospital Monday. She had pneumonia in both lungs, and her condition deteriorated rapidly. That night, doctors moved Jasmina into the ICU because her breathing had become so labored. By Wednesday morning, the brave kindergartner appeared to be doing better. She was even able to speak. Her loved ones clung to the hope that the girl who seemed capable of overcoming anything would come through yet again. Her respite did not last.
Jasmina’s lungs began filling up with fluids in the afternoon, and her body failed to respond to antibiotics.Jasmina’s suffering ended a few hours later. Her death brought heartbreak to the countless people who followed her plight, including a host of celebrities.
“She showed more strength and spirit than many adults I have met,” singer Rihanna said. “She was truly an angel on Earth.”

Jasmina’s funeral was held Sunday (Jan 31) in New York City.
“Jasmina’s life was short but incredible,” family friend Karen Detrick told the tearful crowd gathered at Industria Studios in New York City’s West Village. “Her unyielding spirit moved a city, then a nation, then the whole world.”
Throughout her ordeal, the spunky kindergartner who loved chasing butterflies and playing dress up remained upbeat and concerned for others, especially her mother. “Jasmina would say, ‘Mama, don’t cry, don’t cry,’ ” family friend Heidi Damico told those at the memorial service. “She would say, ‘Everything is beautiful. Everything will be okay.’ But on Wednesday, the day she passed, Jasmina said to Thea, ‘Mama, it’s okay to cry.’ “

Rising pop sensation Justin Bieber returned the favor and planted a wet one right on Rihanna’s cheek last Friday (Jan 29) while he was backstage at rehearsals for the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards. The Biebz certainly has a way with the ladies and it’s no secret that he has a big crush on the Barbados native, but surprisingly this isn’t his first “kissing” encounter with her. He showed up to a photo shoot recently with red lipstick on his face, which was the result of a kiss from Rihanna. But according to 15-year-old Justin, Rihanna said he was “too young” when he asked her out on a date.
“Yea, I asked her out,” Justin said in an interview on Chelsea Lately. “It didn’t go so well since I’m not with her. I asked her out and she was basically like, ‘You’re too young.’”
Maybe in about 3 – 5 years Justin ;-) More pics of Justin Bieber and Rihanna below…

Right now you could probably say Justin Bieber is one of the luckiest teenagers in the world. And now his luck is a bit more evident as he shows off red lipstick on his cheek, which according to VMan Magazine came from Rihanna! The 15-year-old rising pop sensation recently did a spread for the latest issue of VMan Magazine where he talks about his encounter with Rihanna, how he got discovered on YouTube and more.
Justin Bieber shows up to the shoot with a bright-red lipstick kiss on his left cheek. “Rihanna gave that to me,” he announces unprompted, flashing a million dollar grin. At 15-years-old, he is having the time of his life. Less than two years ago he was just a kid, sitting at home in Ontario, Canada, posting videos of himself singing on YouTube.“I never knew it was gonna be a big thing,” he laughs. “I started posting, and then like a month and a half later, a lot, like tons, of viewers were coming in.”
Soon he had a manager. Then he was being flown to Atlanta where Usher signed him to Island. Sure, he doesn’t get to see his friends as much as he might like, but Bieber is the type of kid who, when he’s hanging out with Taylor Swift, Diddy, and Justin Timberlake, doesn’t suffer from too much homesickness.
Over the last year, he’s spent a lot of time in Atlanta working with his team on his first two albums, the second of which comes out in March. There wasn’t much he needed to be taught musically (his old pre-celebrity videos are still on YouTube, and he was just as good then as he is now), but he has picked up something of a Hotlanta edge. “I’m just a kid so I can rock whatever,” he says in an accent more Southern than Canadian. “In the last year I think I’ve developed my style a little, as I’ve built up my swagger.”
