Smokey Robinson Defends J.Lo, Says Motown’s Music Isn’t “Just for Black People”

For those of you who didn’t enjoy Jennifer Lopez’s Motown tribute at the 2019 Grammy Awards, Smokey Robinson wants you to have several seats and stop being a hater because you’re clearly missing the point of Motown.

WATCH: Twitter Was Not Here for J.Lo’s Jentrified Motown Tribute Grammys Performance

On Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 12), at least two days removed from the Grammys, Smokey said in a lengthy statement (via Instagram) that those protesting J.Lo’s performance are “trying to set us back a hundred years” while also forgetting that Motown’s purpose was to break racial barriers. In other words, Motown’s music is not “just for black people,” Smokey said.

“Stop hating,” he continued. “Motown united people, not divided them.”

Smokey ended his statement with this: “Don’t call yourself loving Motown if you’re a hater and spreading the same bigotry that you so strongly oppose coming at you from others. JLo was great and we at Motown love her.”

Read his full statement below:

Attention, all those of you who protested a wonderful, super-talented, world renowned superstar like Jennifer Lopez showing her love and support for Motown music. Here’s some food for thought: On the very first day of Motown, Berry Gordy told the five of us who were present, “I’m gonna start my own record company and we’re gonna make music for everybody and always be sure to make quality music that the world can enjoy.”

And through the grace of God and hard work and determination, we accomplished that. Kids of all races, worldwide, grew up loving the music of Motown, imitating our acts — pretending to be Diana Ross, the Temptations, Michael Jackson and so on. Parents were and still are turning their kids on to the music of Motown.

So now you’re gonna try to diminish the scope of Motown and narrow it down to just music for black people, and you call yourself defending the image of Motown. Well you’re trying to set us back a hundred years. If you call yourself loving Motown, be happy that we reached so many people and broke down so many racial barriers and that an artist like Jennifer, even after hearing all your negative comments, still loved Motown enough to do the tribute anyway. Now that’s love and respect.

And I guess since you feel that way about an artist of another ethnicity doing a tribute to Motown, you must have hated Teena Marie, Rare Earth and some of our other white artists. Stop hating. Motown united people, not divided them.

So don’t call yourself loving Motown if you’re a hater and spreading the same bigotry that you so strongly oppose coming at you from others. JLo was great and we at Motown love her. The beauty of Motown is that we’re a family made up of black, white, Hispanic and Asian women and men. We had a very diverse employee roster. So I hope knowing these few facts helps you get your perspective together and think about the hate you’re spreading.

God bless you.

Mystikal Released From Jail on $3 Million Bond After 18 Months for Rape Charges

After spending 18 months in a Louisiana jail, Mystikal is finally a free man.

The rapper, born Michael Lawrence Tyler, finally posted a $3 million bond, granting his release from the Caddo Correctional Center in Louisiana.

TMZ reports the money came from a record deal advance, as well as funds raised by Mystikal’s family and friends.

Mystikal has been in jail since August 2017 when he was booked on first-degree rape and second-degree kidnapping charges. In December 2017, the “Shake Ya Ass” rapper pleaded not guilty to the alleged assault that took place at a Shreveport casino in October 2016.

Mystikal’s attorney tells TMZ: “It’s been a long time coming for Mike, but now he can get back to being the artist he is, doing what he loves, and seeing his kids again.”

Another member of Mystikal’s legal team, attorney Joel Pearce, said Mystikal has nothing to worry about in regards to his rape case.

“Based on all of the evidence we have,” Pearce told TMZ, “we strongly believe that an amicable resolution is not only possible but probable as an outcome in this case and that Michael Tyler will never be made to return to jail for a crime he didn’t commit.”

The rapper will be free until his pending trial in May 2019.

Pro-Trump Singer Joy Villa Wore “Build the Wall” Dress at the 2019 Grammys

Pro-Trump singer Joy Villa showed up to the 2019 Grammy Awards looking like the world’s tackiest racist.

Villa posed for photos on the red carpet of the Grammys Sunday (Feb. 10) in Los Angeles wearing a dress made to look like a border wall with the words “BUILD THE WALL” written on the back. She completed her offensive look with a red “MAGA” purse, which she proudly posed with.

This isn’t the first time the avid Trump supporter has made a political statement on the Grammys’ red carpet either. In 2017, she wore a blue dress with “Make America Great Again” written on it.

Describing folks’ reaction to her “build the wall” dress, Villa said in an interview with FOX Business’ Mornings with Maria: “It was crazy. A lot of people were just giving me side-eye, giving me negative looks, not willing to look me in the eye, scrunching up their face.”

She added: “The photographers were screaming at me—highly unprofessional—the photographers were hired by the Grammys, you know that’s all they are supposed to do. They were screaming down with Trump. We hate Trump. Trump hates you. You’re a traitor and Trump’s a traitor. I was like this is different—there was way more hate and vitriol this year than in 2017.”

Joy Villa has been walking the red carpet since 2015 and is a “proud” member of the Recording Academy. While she’s gotten used to dealing with liberal Hollywood’s reactions to her political statements, she also feels that some are starting to embrace her support of President Donald Trump.

“I think they love me, but they are not going to quite own me or claim me yet,” she said. “But I also think that they love that I make a splash.”

If you say so, girl.

21 Savage Released on Bond Ahead of ICE Deportation Hearing

21 Savage is a free man for the time being after he was released on bond Tuesday (Feb. 12) ahead of his deportation hearing, TMZ reports.

The rapper was arrested on Super Bowl Sunday (Feb. 3) in Atlanta by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (aka “ICE”) on claims that he’s in the country illegally. According to ICE officials, 21—whose real name is Shéyaa Bin Abraham-Joseph—was actually born in the United Kingdom and overstayed his visa.

His attempt to get a U-Visa raised a few red flags and triggered his ICE arrest.

It isn’t clear why 21 was held by ICE for so long, considering he should’ve been allowed to bond out the day he was arrested because he was neither a flight risk nor a danger to his community, which is the usual standard for holding someone in jail pending a deportation hearing.

21’s team of attorneys—Alex Spiro, Charles H. Kuck and Dina LaPolt—said in a statement: “21 Savage asked us to send a special message to his fans and supporters—he says that while he wasn’t present at the Grammy Awards, he was there in spirit and is grateful for the support from around the world and is more than ever, ready to be with his loved ones and continue making music that brings people together.”

Fed Up With the Barbz & Post-Grammys Drama, Cardi B Deletes Her Instagram

In what should be seen as nothing more than a celebratory moment, Cardi B. has instead thrown in the towel and is showing all signs that she is sick and tired of the BS.

Right now, if you go to her Instagram page, you won’t see anything because Cardi B. has disabled it.

Her Twitter account remains active at least, so she’s not completely gone from social media. But Cardi’s decision to delete her Instagram comes on the heels of many pointing out that her winning a Grammy for Best Rap Album before Nicki Minaj is a slight against Nicki.

Cardi fired off a warning shot that she was getting fed up with the Barbz and the media feeding the frenzy in an IG Stories rant:

It’s hard to understand why Cardi let this get under her skin. She is literally winning right now.

The Barbz who are blowing up her mentions are simply being sore losers. But what’s new? If Cardi still hasn’t figured out how to ignore her detractors, she’s never going to get very far.

But oh well, you know this disappearing act from IG is temporary. She’ll be back in a few days anyway.

El Chapo Found Guilty on All 10 Charges, Faces Life in Prison

After deliberating for six days, a jury in Brooklyn federal court has found notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán guilty on all 10 charges.

The 61-year-old kingpin’s charges included engaging in a criminal enterprise—which in itself comprised 27 violations, including conspiracy to commit murder. Other charges included using firearms and manufacturing and trafficking cocaine, heroin and other drugs.

Via ABC News:

Jurors were asked to weigh 10 counts against Guzman, each with different components.

Guzmán’s federal drug conspiracy trial started three months ago. The verdict comes on the sixth day of jury deliberations.

Prosecutors accused Guzmán of trafficking cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and marijuana into the U.S. as a top leader of the Sinaloa Cartel. The defense asserted Guzmán was the victim of an elaborate conspiracy.

Over 50 witnesses were called by the prosecution, describing all aspets of Guzmán’s life, from brutal murders, a naked journey he took through a secret tunnel, plastic bananas filled with cocaine and spied-on mistresses.

Robert Capers, then-U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said in 2017, “Guzmán’s destructive and murderous rise as an international narcotics trafficker is akin to that of a small, cancerous tumor that metastasized and grew into a full-blown scourge that for decades littered the streets of Mexico with the casualties of violent drug wars.”

Guzmán has twice escaped from prison in Mexico, most recently in 2015. He was recaptured in 2016 and extradited to the U.S. in 2017.

El Chapo’s sentencing is scheduled for June 25th. He faces life in prison.

Former “106 & Park” Host A.J. Calloway Under Fire for Serious Sexual Assault Allegations

If the name A.J. Calloway doesn’t ring a bell, it’s probably because you might have been too young to remember the glory days of BET’s last music video-focused show, 106 & Park.

A.J. was one half of the dynamic hosting duo, Free and A.J., who welcomed pre-teens and teenagers home from school with a top ten countdown of their favorite music videos, interspersed with live performances and interviews from their favorite artists.

Since then, A.J. has found steady work as a correspondent for Extra, an entertainment newsmagazine TV show that’s been around for even longer than 106 & Park.

But A.J.’s boyish grin and clean-cut appearance may have been a front for a malicious dark side, if the allegations of sexual assault being levied against him are to be believed.

Yes, A.J. is the latest man to be thrust into the #MeToo spotlight. The New York Times has the details on the sexual assault allegations being made against the TV correspondent, who has been suspended from Extra while investigations are underway.

In June, The Hollywood Reporter published the account of Sil Lai Abrams, a writer and domestic violence awareness activist, who said Mr. Calloway had groped her breast and exposed himself to her in his car in 2006. She said he tried to force her head onto his lap and later masturbated after placing her hand on his lap.

Then in January, The Daily Beast published the accounts of two unnamed women who said that Mr. Calloway had also sexually assaulted them. One of the women said Mr. Calloway had lain on top of her after a party at his home and repeatedly tried to open her blouse and pull down her skirt. She said he tried to place her hand on him while he masturbated.

Even more worrying for Extra producers is the fact that The Hollywood Reporter has even more allegations it’ll be publishing against the host and journalist soon.

So far, his former 106 & Park co-host Free has kept her mouth shut, and A.J. hasn’t made any public statements on social media. But who knew A.J. was into all of this masturbatory behavior?

It’s always the so-called “good guys” who are up to no good…

XXXTentacion Left Out of 2019 Grammys “In Memoriam” Segment Because of Domestic Violence Allegations

Each year, the Grammy Awards pay tribute to musicians who have passed away since the previous year’s ceremony. This year, the Grammys’ “In Memoriam” segment featured tributes to Aretha Franklin, Mac Miller, Avicii, and many others.

However, XXXTentacion—who was tragically shot and killed in June 2018—was missing from the segment, and fans immediately took notice:

According to Variety, before the show aired Sunday night (Feb. 10), reps for the late rapper reached out to the Recording Academy multiple times requesting that they recognize him, considering “Sad!” was one of the most listened to songs of 2018.

But, due to the rapper’s well-known history of domestic violence, he was rejected from the “In Memoriam” segment, Variety reported.

After the nominations were revealed in December, Academy president Neil Portnow was asked by Rolling Stone whether the segment would include XXX.

“I will tell you it’s a daunting challenge,” said Portnow. “We track those that we lose in our industry in any given year and then we have a process by which we go through it. Our on-air in memoriam — we’re lucky if we wind up [featuring] 10 to 15 percent of those we lose. Because it’s always hard choices. All of that is to say, I don’t have any answers for you now, but obviously artists who were prominent and well-known by the public are people who are recognized and we’ll just wind up having to see how it plays out.”

The divisive artist first broke in 2017 after appearing on the cover of XXL Magazine’s influential “Freshman” issue alongside Kamaiyah, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, PnB Rock, MadeinTYO, Playboi Carti, Aminé, Kap G, KYLE and Ugly God. XXX won the fan vote to make the cover.

The 20-year-old Florida native has been embroiled in legal problems over his alleged beating of a girlfriend while pregnant. The controversy has resulted in numerous articles calling for the greater music industry to not “co-sign,” or endorse, his music, including one that was published by Pitchfork titled, “XXXTentacion Is Blowing Up Behind Bars. Should He Be?”

XXX was also one of the artists to spur a “hateful conduct” ban on Spotify — since revoked — which removed his music from popular playlists like Rap Caviar. Hours after his death, XXXTentacion claimed the top two spots on the playlist, with songs from “?, along with a tag at the top that read, “Rest In Peace, XXXTENTACION.”

Legendary hip-hop producer 9th Wonder said XXXTentacion should have been included in the Grammys’ “In Memoriam” segment based on his musical legacy alone.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAdAB7KNmsc

“Everybody has a right to be remembered,” he said. “If you’re an artist in this game and you gave a lot to it and you gave a lot to the game and changed culture […] he should have been remembered.”

Why Did the Grammys Cut Drake Off in the Middle of His Acceptance Speech?

After winning the Grammy for Best Rap Song (for “God’s Plan”), Drake delivered an impassioned speech that was cut short by Grammy producers.

The Canadian rapper surprised the audience by appearing from under the stage to personally accept his fourth trophy. But instead of thanking his team and his family (like most artists do), Drizzy chose to use his moment to let everyone know that awards really aren’t all that important.

“This is like the first time in Grammys history where I actually am who I thought I was for a second, so I like that, that’s really nice,” he said. “I definitely did not think I was winning anything.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57AqIJLId-0

He continued: “I wanna take this opportunity while I’m up here to just talk to all the kids that are watching this that are aspiring to do music, all my peers that make music from their heart, that do things pure and tell the truth. I wanna let you know that we play an opinion-based sport, not a factual-based sport. So it’s not the NBA where at the end of the year you’re holding a trophy because you made the right decisions or won the games.

“This is a business where sometimes it’s up to a bunch of people that might not understand what a mixed-race kid from Canada has to say, or a fly Spanish girl from New York, or anybody else, or a brother from Houston, my brother Travis [Scott]. But look, the point is you’ve already won if you have people who are singing your songs word for word, if you’re a hero in your hometown.

“if there [are] people who have regular jobs who are coming out in the rain, in the snow, spending their hard-earned money to buy tickets to come to your shows, you don’t need this right here, I promise you, you already won.”

After a brief pause, mid-sentence, the Grammys cut to a commercial, leaving many to assume that Drake’s mic was cut for throwing shade at the Recording Academy.

According to Variety, when the Grammys cut Drake’s mic, “a groan in the media room could probably be heard all the way into the arena.”

Coming back to the press room after the segment, presenters Dan + Shay seemed unaware Drake had been cut short. Whether he knew or not, Drake wasn’t in a hurry to leave; he was seen later bopping to a performance by pal Travis Scott.

After the show, a representative for the Grammys told Variety that producers didn’t cut Drake off on purpose, and they actually offered him to come back on stage to finish his speech, but he declined because he said he “didn’t have anything to add.”

“During Drake’s speech, there was a natural pause and at that moment the producers did assume that he was done and then cut to commercial,” the Grammys rep said. “However the producers did speak with Drake following his speech and did offer him to come back on stage to finish whatever his thoughts were. But Drake said he was happy with what he said and didn’t have anything to add.”

Alicia Keys Wows at the Grammys With Dual Piano Flex (VIDEO)

As host of the 2019 Grammy Awards, it was expected that Alicia Keys would take the stage at some point during the 3.5-hour show. But we had no idea she would flex on all of us by playing two pianos at the same damn time!

After showing off a bit with her dual piano playing skills (shout to Hazel Scott!), Keys then performed a wide-ranging medley of cover songs, including Roberta Flack’s “Killing Me Softly,” Juice WRLD’s “Lucid Dreams,” Drake’s “In My Feelings,” Ella Mai’s “Boo’d Up” and so much more.

Unlike J.Lo’s Jentrified Motown tribute, Twitter was all the way here for Alicia showing us why she changed her last name to “Keys”:

Chloe x Halle Pay Tribute to Donny Hathaway With “Where Is the Love” Cover at the Grammys (VIDEO)

Chloe x Halle made their Grammy Awards debut Sunday night (Feb. 10) with a soul-stirring tribute to the late Donny Hathaway.

The sister duo—who are signed to Beyoncé’s Parkwood Entertainment label imprint—performed Hathaway’s “Where Is the Love,” and naturally, they kilt it.

WATCH: Twitter Was Not Here for J.Lo’s Jentrified Motown Tribute Grammys Performance

When Jennifer Lopez was announced as the headlining performer for the Grammys’ Motown tribute, folks naturally scratched their heads and collectively asked: “How Sway?!?”

When she finally took the stage Sunday night (Feb. 10) at the 61st annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles to perform, she did her thing, yet, something was still… missing.

Twitter took notice and basically said, “Nah, sis, that wasn’t it” as they roasted the hell out of her for “Jentrifying” a Motown tribute.

Maybe it was the fact that Motown artists were of a certain heritage, and Jenny from the Block is not. Maybe it was the fact that Motown artists have a certain soul of about them, and J.Lo does not.

I mean, she did have Ne-Yo and Smokey Robinson with her (they came out near the end), but something just didn’t seem right about having a Latina woman with limited vocal abilities performing a whole ass tribute to legendary Motown artists.

Regardless… Twitter was clearly NOT here for J.Lo’s Jentrified Motown tribute.

Cardi B & Offset Reunite, Lick Tongues on the Grammy Awards Red Carpet (PHOTOS)

Good news for Offset: It looks like he definitely got his wife Cardi B back. Things were looking seriously shaky for the Migos rapper after his public plea at the Rolling Loud festival to take him back fell flat.

Bad news for all of us: We apparently have to suffer through Cardi and Offset’s awkward reunion tour as they get reacquainted to being a couple again in public.

Here are some photos of them licking each other’s tongues and doing the absolute damn most:

Seriously though, Cardi’s wild, offbeat, eccentric personality is very much a yin to Offset’s yang. And while I can certainly buy that opposites attract, Offset looks dead inside while Cardi is clearly wearing something that, in the words of Marie Kondo, sparks joy in her.

Offset looks like he rummaged through his daddy’s leftover, oversize Men’s Wearhouse suits and Cardi looks like a clamshell turned inside out.

Making matters worse is how Offset’s face is screaming, “I’d rather be in the limo sippin’ on lean and smokin’ a blunt but Cardi said if I don’t do the red carpet with her…”

Cardi, I hope you know what you’re doing with this dead fish-looking-ass dude cause a lot of women would’ve thrown that foul tuna right back into the ocean.

Cardi B Won Her First Grammy Before Nicki Minaj: Is This Disrespectful?

You know, whether you are Team Barb or Team Carb, you’ve got to admit that Nicki Minaj, for a very long time, carried the female rap game on her back.

RELATED: Cardi B Makes History As First Solo Female Rapper to Best Rap Album at the Grammys

You can argue that some of that was by her own design, as she seemingly shunned collaboration or proximity to other female rappers, but others would say that Nicki Minaj singlehandedly helped revive the mainstream female rapper as a viable commercial entity.

While Cardi B and Nicki Minaj started out friendly, with the two trading compliments about each other in the press and on social media throughout 2017 and early 2018, things turned REALLY ugly in the middle and toward the end of 2018 when their seemingly friendly relationship turned sour and it ended with the two trading harsh words and fisticuffs at that infamous Harpers Bazaar party fiasco.

Things seemed to have settled down since then, but don’t be surprised to see if the fire gets reignited after Cardi B successfully took home the Grammy for Best Rap Album on Sunday night, Feb. 10 at the Grammy awards.

Cardi B’s debut album is scoring a Grammy for Best Rap Album, after Nicki Minaj has had more than 10 nominations and zero wins from 2011 to 2016, according to Wikipedia.

Again: No shade to Cardi because hey, a win’s a win. But DAMN. That has to be the biggest bitter pill an artist has had to swallow since Beyoncé lost her Grammy Album of the Year to Adele in 2017.

And if Nicki Minaj comes out of her neck complaining about it, she’s gonna sound like the bitter, jealous, old hag she accused Lil’ Kim of being when she was coming up in the game. What a conundrum for Onika.

As you can imagine, many of the mean streets of Twitter unleashed their thoughts and feelings about Cardi trumping Onika in the Grammys race.

Of course, Lil’ Kim had to give her kudos to her nemesis’s rival Cardi as well:

Bury me in a casket. Onika Tanya Maraj has been disrespected, overlooked and shitted on at the highest level y’all. But hey, Cardi played the game better and you know what they say about not hating the player…

Shaquille O’Neal Reportedly the Man at the Center of Fight That Put Bow Wow & Kiyomi Leslie in Jail

Rumor has it that Shaq is the man Bow Wow caught his girlfriend Kiyomi Leslie “hanging all over” at a Super Bowl weekend party, which sparked the fight that landed them both in an Atlanta area jail.

As we previously reported, Bow and Kiyomi’s fight was the result of him going off on her about talking to another man at a party during the weekend of Super Bowl LIII.

According to one Atlanta reporter, that man is former NBA star Shaquille O’Neal.

WSBTV’s Michael Seiden wrote on Twitter:

“Bow Wow’s girlfriend claims ATL rapper became ‘upset’ and ‘jealous; after he saw her talking to another man at a Super Bowl party, police confirmed. Bow Wow’s girlfriend told police that when the couple got home from the party, the ATL rapper confronted her before their argument turned physical, investigators confirmed.

“Bow Wow’s girlfriend accused the ATL rapper of hitting her in the head, pulling her by her hair before dragging her from the bedroom and telling her to leave his place.

“Bow Wow told police that he got upset with his girlfriend because she was all over a man named ‘Shaquille.’ Hours before his arrest, the ATL rapper was spotted at Shaquille O’Neal’s Super Bowl event, Shaq’ Fun House.’ I’ve reached out to Shaq and his representatives for comment.

“ATL rapper told police that after asking his girlfriend to leave his place, she became ‘aggressive’ and threw a ‘nightstand lamp’ at him.

“The incident report did not give a last name for ‘Shaquille.’ I’ve reached out to Shaq and his representatives for comment.”

Whew, chile. A mess!

The Game Drags Tomi Lahren All Over the Internet With Photo “B4 Plastic Surgery”

Cardi B and Nicki Minaj aren’t the only rappers who have a problem with Tomi Lahren.

In response to Lahren’s Twitter post mocking 21 Savage’s ICE arrest—”I got one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight ICE agents ready to deport ya,” she tweeted—The Game took to Instagram, calling her a “cum gargling, microwaved, carrot skinned, 90 year old white man body havin slut” and telling her to “stay out the tanning salon” because she’s “starting to look like a sick tangerine.”

Read his full post below (via XXL):

“This cum gargling, microwaved carrot skinned, 90 year old white man body havin slut @tomilahren always got sumn slick to say. @21savage gettin detained by ICE is not funny nor anything for ya middle of the mall clip in wearin’ hoe ass to be joking about. And he didn’t stop there.

In his second round of disses, Game said he found a photo of Tomi before having plastic surgery.

“Got room for another face up there I see,” he said, referring to her extremely large forehead. “[And] we gone need ‘Dog The Bounty Hunter’ to track down them eyebrows,” he added.

Not before long, The Game posted via his Instagram stories that Tomi Lahren had his posts removed from Instagram.

“You’re still a dusty orange peel,” he wrote.
