Haters are just gonna hate. While the likes of Nicki Minaj and Missy Elliott are congratulating Cardi B for becoming the first solo female rapper to have a No. 1 song on Billboard’s Hot 100 in nearly 20 years, there’s one female rapper who’s pouting in the corner.
Azealia Banks, a rapper who has become more known for her controversial comments and skin bleaching than for her music, was not feeling the Cardi B love. In a series of now-deleted tweets on Monday (Sept. 25), she called the “Bodak Yellow” emcee a “poor man’s Nicki [Minaj].”
The salty rapper ranted that black men in the hip-hop industry never rooted for her, Minaj, or Remy Ma in the way they’re celebrating Cardi—who Banks believes is Latina and not black. Banks even argues that culture influencers like Charlamagne tha God should have helped her way before giving Cardi an opportunity.

Though she deleted the original rant, Banks has continued to tweet. Despite her overall negativity, she wants people in the industry—particularly black men—to recognize her hard work instead of “carrying” newcomers like Cardi. “They think my suffering is funny… I rap my ass off,” she wrote.

It would probably be in Azealia Banks’ best interest to drop the negativity and hate and just focus on making quality music. She clearly measures success based on mainstream acceptance and approval, but this doesn’t happen for everyone. There are plenty of artists who never hit No. 1 on the Hot 100, but still make good music and have a loyal fan base.
Unfortunately, she craves attention more and chooses to go on petty and controversial rants. I hope she eventually finds peace.
