Michael Douglas isn’t just generating buzz for his performance in the fabulously over-the-top Liberace biopic “Behind the Candelabra.” He’s also causing a stir following his recent revelation about the cause of his throat cancer.
In a recent interview with The Guardian, the 68-year-old Oscar winner spoke about his 2010 battle with stage four throat cancer.
When asked if he feels that drinking and smoking played a role in his diagnosis, he blurted out this gem:
“No, Because without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV [human papillomavirus], which actually comes about from cunnilingus. I did worry if the stress caused by my son’s incarceration didn’t help trigger it. But yeah, it’s a sexually transmitted disease that causes cancer. And if you have it, cunnilingus is also the best cure for it.”
For the unaware, “cunnilingus” is defined as “the stimulation of the female genitals using the tongue and/or lips.” So, pretty much, oral sex. And I’m no medical expert, but how can the very thing that causes that type of cancer also be what cures it?
To clarify, the “incarceration” that Douglas is referring to is that of his son’s, Cameron Douglas, who is currently serving 10 years in prison after being arrested on drug charges.
Douglas’ comments were quickly thwarted by his rep, who told Us Weekly, that the actor was speaking generally and was not referring to anyone specifically (**cough** Catherine Zeta-Jones **cough**).
“He did not say this was the cause of his cancer. In a discussion of oral cancer, he said this is one of the suspected causes. He never made it personal.”
It looks like either his rep didn’t actually read what Douglas said or (in the words of Jon Stewart) has decided to take up residence on Bullshit Mountain.
