A black man is dead after yet another officer-involved shooting, this time in Charlotte, North Carolina. The man’s name has officially been revealed as Keith Lamont Scott.
Here are some things to know about Keith Scott and the police-involved shooting that took his life.
1. Police say Keith Scott was armed when they approached him.
According to the Charlotte Observer, police were searching for someone who had an outstanding warrant at The Village at College Downs apartment complex on Concord Road when they saw a man with a gun leave a vehicle.
Police say they approached the man after he got back into the vehicle. The man then allegedly got back out of the car with a firearm and “posed an imminent deadly threat” to officers. At least one officer opened fire and struck the alleged gunman.
CMPD Public Affairs Keith Trietley said in a statement.
“Officers observed the subject get back into the vehicle at which time they began to approach the subject. The subject got back out of the vehicle armed with a firearm and posed an imminent deadly threat to the officers who subsequently fired their weapon striking the subject.”
Investigators say they recovered the gun the man was holding at the scene of the shooting.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney said the officer who shot the man has been placed on administrative leave as the shooting is being investigated.
2. Scott’s daughter recorded the shooting’s aftermath on Facebook Live, and she found out he was dead on camera.
The victim’s daughter, who goes by Lyric YourAdorable Scott on Facebook, recorded the scene of the crime following the shooting on Facebook Live.

In the video, she screams expletives at officers and calls them out for shooting her father, who she claims didn’t have a gun. She says in the video her father was a disabled man and was minding his business when he was shot four times by police.
In another live video on her page, the daughter breaks down as she hears from the news her father died at the hospital.
3. His family claims that he was unarmed when cops shot him.
Scott’s family is disputing claims by officers that he had a gun. According to his sister, her brother was reading a book and waiting for his kids to get off the bus when cops shot him.
“He didn’t have no gun. He wasn’t messing with nobody,” the woman told a news reporter. The sister says the police jumped out, asked him to put his hands up, and shot him on sight.

The victim’s brother also told reporters that his brother got out of his car because he was scared when police approached him.

Another witness on the scene of the shooting said that the victim was unarmed and his hands were to his side when shots were fired.

4. Keith Scott was married and a father to 7 children.
According to Keith Lamont Scott’s family, he was married and had seven children. One family member told reporters that Scott was a “great man and great father” and he waited at the bus stop for his son every day.
In the wake of his tragic shooting death, a GoFundMe page has been created to help donate money to Scott’s family. The page mentions that Scott was “taken away from his wife Rakeyia Scott and 7 chilren and family who love him dearly.”
The message reads in full:
We unfortunately are here again where police have shot another innocent black man because “he posed a threat”. This can no longer be tolerated it’s time to take a stand! On Tuesday 9/20/2016 Keith Lamont Scott was shot reportedly 4 times while reading a book and waiting for his son to get off the bus. He has sadly been taken away from his wife Rakeyia Scott and 7 children and family who love him dearly. We can’t keep letting police take away our innocent black men from their families the time is now to stand up and support Black Lives! Please donate what you can to help this family in this very sad time! And please lift up prayers for their family as well! Justice will prevail!
5. Crowds are gathering to protest the shooting.
A crowd of a 100 people have gathered at the scene of the shooting and are protesting the victim’s death. One protester was seen holding a sign that read, “it was a book.”
The incident comes not even 24 hours after the officer-involved shooting death of Terence Crutcher, an unarmed black man who was tending to his car that was broken down on the side of the road.
