A 20-year-old man booked on US Airways was eventually arrested after he refused to pull up his baggy pants, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Deshon Marman, a football player at the University of New Mexico, was boarding a flight in San Francisco on Wednesday when the incident happened.

That’s when The Associated Press says a US Airways worker noticed his pants were “below his buttocks, but above the knees, and his boxer shorts were showing.”

The employee asked Marman to pull up his pants for the flight, but — after a series of back-and-forth exchanges — he was asked to leave the plane and the police were called.

“It took 15 to 20 minutes of talking to get him to leave the plane, and he was arrested for trespassing,” San Francisco Police Sgt. Michael Rodriguez tells the Chronicle, which adds “Marman allegedly resisted officers as he was being led away.”

The man’s mother tells the Chronicle her son was already in a difficult emotional state at the airport. He had been in his hometown of San Francisco for the funeral of a high school friend who was shot and killed. Marman was flying back to Albuquerque, where the University of New Mexico is located.

Marman’s mother says she thinks her son drew the attention of the airline employee “because of the way he looks — young black man with dreads and baggy pants. But he’s a good kid trying to make it, and he’s going through a lot. And then this happens.”

The Chronicle reached out to US Airways, where spokeswoman Valerie Wunder noted that the carrier’s dress code prohibits “indecent exposure or inappropriate” dress.
