Count Marvin Gaye‘s son out on the people who support a biopic about the late great R&B singer.
Lenny Kravitz reportedly signed on to play Marvin Gaye in a biopic called “Sexual Healing” (working title), which is to focus on Marvin’s life in the 1980’s when he was battling drug abuse and depression while living in London, before his father shot and killed him in L.A. in 1984.
But Marvin Gaye III wants production on the film stopped because he feels that it is “wrong” and “shameful” for the producers to try and make a film about the lowest point of his father’s life. “They don’t even know the whole story,” he told TMZ.
Marvin III and Lenny were also reportedly schoolmates and are still friends today; and Marvin III, who obviously feels a little betrayed, wants to talk to Lenny about “why he would do this.”
Marvin III says he and his family are meeting with lawyers to try and halt production, telling TMZ, “I would hope [Lenny] doesn’t have any idea that we are against this film being done.”
Gaye III — who was adopted by Gaye and is a staunch defender of his father’s legacy, the Huffington Post notes — recently ran into trouble with the IRS, and was also sued in 2007 by Lou Rawls Jr., the son of Lou Rawls, who claimed he was attacked by “four large dogs” while visiting Gaye III’s home.
Gaye III has also gone as far as to sue restaurants and radio stations for copyright infringement on songs, so he could also be trying to put production on a hiatus so he can figure out a way to make money from it.
