Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are getting a divorce, after a little over half a decade of marriage … and seven years after Tom Cruise famously jumped up and down on Oprah’s couch to declare his love for the actress.

Citing irreconcilable differences, Katie filed the papers in New York City on Thursday (Jun 28) through her attorney Jonathan Wolfe, who released a statement calling the divorce a “personal and private matter for Katie and her family.”

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes got married in an Italian castle in 2006. Holmes once told Seventeen magazine that her dream was to marry Tom Cruise.

Tom is said to be “blindsided” by the news, and Katie wants sole legal custody and “primary residential custody” of the couple’s 6-year-old daughter Suri (their only child together).

She is also seeking a “suitable amount” of child support, according to legal documents obtained by TMZ.

Reps for Cruise told People, “Katie has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy.”

The Hollywood power couple’s marriage was Holmes’ first and the third for Cruise, who had previously been married to actresses Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman, the latter of which he has two children with.

Sources tell TMZ that Tom’s rampant belief in Scientology was a big reason behind Katie’s decision to end the marriage.
