His falsetto makes women melt on the spot, and his swagger got him into a now 3-year marriage with beautiful black actress Paula Patton. Robin Thicke‘s musical career didn’t begin to gain much momentum until the 2006 release of “The Evolution of Robin Thicke,” and now he’s back with an all-new album, entitled “Something Else!” But why did he decide to name his album that? And why is it that we never hear of any “gossip” surrounding his 3-year marriage to Paula Patton? Check out Gossip On This‘ exclusive interview with the R&B singer below!
Dustin: So Robin, tell us about this new album you’ve been working on?
Robin Thicke: Well, it’s called “Something Else,” and it’s really about what’s going on in the world right now, and I’m trying to give people something different: a new hope from a new perspective, a la Barack Obama.
Dustin: So how’d you come up with the name of the album? Is there any special meaning behind it?
Robin Thicke: Based on what’s going on in the world today, I feel like people are looking for something else. Something fresh. Something different, like Lil’ Wayne!
Dustin: So what was the overall inspiration for the new album?
Robin Thicke: Well, it’s always about my life. I don’t try to trick people, I just express what I’m going through and try to connect it to other people. And I spent a lot of time in New York, and I spent a lot of time in Paris to try and soak up some different environments for this album.
Dustin: What time of sound can we expect to hear from it?
Robin Thicke: Well, I brought in a lot of the horns and string players from the Michael Jackson “Off the Wall” / “Thriller” records, and I just tried to bring that seventies Earth Wind & Fire / Barry White / Curtis Mayfield magic.
Dustin: I know you’re a songwriter and a producer yourself, but did you get any help from anyone else?
Robin Thicke: No, I just used my production partner, my band, and the string and horn guy.
Dustin: I hear there are no guest appearances on the album. Is that true?
Robin Thicke: Yeah
Dustin: Why did you decide to go that route?
Robin Thicke: Well, I didn’t have any on my first album, and then on the second album I had people on it because organically I was getting phone calls from all this great talent, and I’m like, “How am I gonna turn down Lil’ Wayne, or working with Pharrell or Faith Evans?” But this time around, I made the album really quick. I made it in a few months, and I just felt really good about it and I just wanted to get it out to people as soon as possible.
Dustin: Okay, now when you’re going through the process of creating an album, or just writing one song, what gets you in the mood? Is there a certain process that you go through, or does it just come naturally?
Robin Thicke: Normally, I just wait until I have something important to say. Or I’ll try to jam with the band, like we’ll just go in and try to jam on some grooves, and see if we get a good groove. And then I’ll save that groove until I’ve got something to say.
Dustin: Now I know you and your wife, Paula Patton, have been married for about 3 years now, correct?
Robin Thicke: Yes.
Dustin: We don’t hear about you guys in the tabloids often. How do you two manage to keep your relationship out of the public eye?
Robin Thicke: Well you know, just because we’re just together and we spend time with our family and we spend a lot of time trying to make great art. And you can only get in trouble by going to the parties and doing wack stuff to people. And we try not to do wack stuff to anybody.
Dustin: Okay now, the last I heard about you two, was that you were expecting your first child together. Will she/he be here any day now?
Robin Thicke: No actually that was a misquote. That was my brother’s wife who got pregnant, and she had her baby back in May.
Dustin: Oh okay, well congratulations on being an uncle!
Robin Thicke: Yeah, yeah, that’s pretty cool. Thanks you.
Dustin: You’re welcome. Now, as far as your music career is concerned, you’re in a great place right now. You have a platinum album under your belt, and a lot of people are checking for your music these days. What advice do you have for up-and-coming singers who are trying to get where you’re at right now?
Robin Thicke: I’d just say do it because you love it and not because you want to be famous. Because fame comes and goes, and fame brings on a lot of problems too, but if you love to sing, then nobody can ever take that away from you. And never stop. Never stop.
