Yep! Drake is approaching the music business in the same way that his boss Lil Wayne did with The Carter 3. As most of you know, Drake’s newly released album Thank Me Later was leaked 2 weeks ago. And did the young rap newcomer start shaking in his boots? Hell no. Instead of letting his label rush the album to the stores, he simply told them it might actually help sales to keep the original release date and let fans listen to the leaked version as much as they wanted:
“They tried to force me into a situation — I’m not sure if it was the label — [but] somebody tried to force me into a situation and drop the album June 9,” Drake told MTV News earlier this week. “I really was like, ‘June 9 isn’t enough time to let them digest all the leaked music. If they got the music already, let’s let them listen to it. Let’s give them that two weeks to ride around to it and talk to their friends about it.’ ‘Cause that way when they show up to the store, there’s no pressure — you know what you’re buying. You’re just going to support an artist you love and music you believe in.”
We think that this philosophy is the best way to go in the new age of the music business. If you music is truly hot, it will sale. If it isn’t, it will fail unlike 10 years when pretty much EVERYTHING sold because music wasn’t so freely available to download on the Internet. But since the game has changed, it’s time to change with it! We hope this happens more often so that artists can start taking their craft a bit more seriously and put out GOOD music that’s worth buying.
