R&B singer Jesse Powell has died at the age of 51 years old.

His sister, Tamara Powell, took to Instagram late Tuesday night (Sep. 13) to announce his death through a statement from the family, saying that he “passed away peacefully in his Los Angeles home.”

The statement reads:

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved son, brother and uncle Jesse Powell.

He passed away peacefully in his Los Angeles home. The family asks for privacy at this time as we mourn this tremendous loss and celebrate his everlasting legacy.

Jesse loved music and he especially loved his fans who supported him throughout his career. We want you all to know that you meant the world to him.

Jesse Powell was best known for his hit single “You,” which was released in 1999 and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop chart and No. 10 on the Hot 100.

He is credited with a four-octave vocal range and was a Grammy nominee. He released four studio albums to date, with his latest being released in 2003.

Jesse had just celebrated his 51st birthday on September 12th, the day before his passing.
