A 13-year-old 7th grader stabbed a school resource officer at Carwise Middle School in Palm Harbor, after bringing 11 bottles of gasoline into a school lavatory, deputies say.

The school, located at 3301 Bentley Drive, was on lockdown for most of the day, and will have normal classes Wednesday.

Detectives say a Pinellas County School Police Resource Officer Kenneth Fridlund was stabbed in the boys bathroom while he investigated a teacher’s concern over the smell of gasoline.

Fridlund confronted the teen and, without warning, was stabbed in the abdomen. They scuffled, and he was stabbed again in the shoulder and in the arm before he and a staff aide managed to take away the knife.

He was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.   No one else was injured.

Investigators said the boy told them he only intended to use the gas-filled bottles to scare other students he said were bullying him, and never planned an attack or had a list of students to be hurt.

The name of the teenager was being withheld until he completed a mental health examination and was taken to the Pinellas County Juvenile Assessment Center, the sheriff’s office said.

He was expected to be charged with one count of attempted murder and eleven counts of possession/manufacturing of firebombs.
