After a 2 month hiatus, Williams played her first match against Vesna Dolonts and beat her 6-4, 6-3 in the first round.

Shortly after her win, when she was asked why she had to miss tournaments this summer, she replied, “It was just energy-sucking, and I just couldn’t play pro tennis. It was disappointing, because I had huge plans for this summer, of course, to improve my ranking. To miss out on all those points was definitely devastating. Just to miss so much time off tour was just disheartening. But I’m just really excited to be back.”

Later, in a statement released via the tournament, Williams said, “I enjoyed playing my first match here, and wish I could continue but right now I am unable to. I am thankful I finally have a diagnosis and am now focused on getting better and returning to the court soon.”

When Williams left the site shortly before 5 p.m., wearing a white sweater and purple shorts, she was asked by reporters whether she would say anything. She smiled and waved and shook her head to indicate, “No,” then climbed into the back of a tournament transportation car and rode away.

Carlos Fleming, Venus’s agent, told reporters, “All of us came with the full expectation she’d be playing today. She was geared up to play her match. I just hope she’s OK, and I hope she’s healthy and going to be fine.”

Those Williams sisters don’t be playing no games! Friday (Jun 3), Serena and Venus Williams won their fourth consecutive doubles title, defeating Czech Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia, at the 2010 French Open in Paris. Venus and Serena managed to become the third team in women’s history to obtain four major titles.

Venus: “We just realize what it’s like to have that major title next to your name, and it’s pretty addictive.”

Serena: “When you’re out there and you’re playing singles, it’s a great feeling obviously. But also to play doubles with someone that’s your sister, your flesh and blood, that’s even better.”

The Williams sisters obviously love tennis, but apparently they love them some football too! Venus and Serena Williams have purchased a stake in the NFL’s Miami Dolphins. The duo joins the likes of Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez and Glori and Emilio Estefan in becoming limited ownership partners in the Miami team, making them the first female African-American to hold an ownership stake in an NFL franchise. The Dolphins’ owner and managing partner, Stephen Ross, made the announcement Tuesday (Aug 25).

“I am so excited to be part of such a renowned organization,” says Serena. “Having spent so much of my childhood in the area, being involved with a staple of Miami culture is a huge honor. We look forward to many championships and much success together with the Miami Dolphins.”

Agrees Venus, “I am honored to be a partner in the Miami Dolphins franchise and thankful to owner Stephen Ross for allowing Serena and I to be part of Miami Dolphins history.”

The 2008 Finals was a great event in itself, but the final long awaited match-up between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics was nail biting, to say the least, until the final buzzer. The past rivalry between these two team is legendary. For the 11th time, they battled head to head for the championship title. Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce were known as the ‘Big Three’ all up against a one man stampede, Kobe Byrant. The Los Angeles Lakers showed their teamwork in the 2008 Finals, but the Celtics lead the series victoriously.  Although the Boston Celtics took the 2008 Championship title, it was still very interesting watching every game they played against one another, making it the best moment in sports.

Southside Chicago native point guard, Derrick Rose, was chosen as the top draft pick of the NBA. Rose got recognition for his position by scouts who had watched him play for his college basketball team, University of Memphis Tigers. During his freshman year at the University of Memphis playing with the Tigers, he lead his team to 38 consecutive wins breaking a new NCAA record taking them to the NCAA Division Basketball Tournament.  He was selected first overall by hometown team, Chicago Bulls, in the 2008 NBA Draft. At 6-foot-3, Rose is now averaging 17.2 points per game.

The Women’s National Basketball Association is known for there charisma and strong athletic women, but until recently, they’ve never been known for “cat fights!” One of the most respected womens’ basketball team, the Los Angeles Sparks, was involved in a brawl against the Detroit Shock. Candace Parker and Lisa Leslie were ejected from the game in the final 90 seconds. It was wild seeing all that athleticism get thrown hand to hand between all those strong women…hahaha.

WIMBLEDON, ENGLAND // SATURDAY, JULY 5TH 2008 » Venus & Serena Williams played the final womens’ singles match in the 2008 Wimbledon Championship today in Wimbledon. Venus came out the winner of a very close tiresome match against her sister Serena and was awarded the Venus Rosewater Dish! They both played so ambitiously and you can tell it took at toll on both of them. Venus won both sets (7-5, 6-4) to defeat her sister to claim her 5th Wimbledon title and 7th Grand Slam Championship. Within the first sets, Venus & Serena went back and forth with intense signatures force screams making the game more intense to watch.

Serena & Venus Williams’ mother, Oracene, was there to watch them play one another but father, Richard, wasn’t there because he can’t stand seeing his daughters face one another in matches like this. Venus held back her joy in the sake of her sister’s heartache of losing. Serena played an amazingly challenging game and they both have gotten so far but one has to win…and lose. Venus spoke on how challenging it was playing her sister:

“I have to first of all say great match to Serena,” Venus said. “I can’t believe that it’s five but when you’re in the final against Serena Williams, five seems too far away from that first point. She played so awesome. It was really a task to beat her. It’s so rewarding to perform here, Venus added. “Every time I come back I know I have the chance to play well and make history. My first job is big sister and I take that very seriously.”

Venus also joked about how the family gets mixed feelings when it comes down to them playing against one another:

“It’s hard for all of them, but I like to think they want me to win.”

Although Serena didn’t obtain the championship title she still came out a champ awarded with the runner-up plate trophy. Serena is happy “Williams” is on the 2008 Wimbledon Championship:

“I’m so happy that at least one of us was able to win,” Serena said. “She’s played great this year. We’re just glad to be in the finals again.”

WIMBLEDON, ENGLAND // THURSDAY, JULY 3RD 2008 » Venus & Serena Williams are at it again dominating in the 2008 Wimbledon Championship games once again! They’ve beaten every challenger they’ve been matched within the lineups. Serena was matched against Zhang Jie of China and took another victory of her to add to all the rest of the won sets in the tournament. Serena hit 14 aces in a (6-2, 7-6) winning the match! Serena also played a doubles match with sister Venus the day prior. Serena holds the 8-7 career edge over her sister Venus but they both still managed to dominate together. Serena says she was definitely challenged by Zhang Jie and it wasn’t easy:

“She definitely pushed me, Serena said, Unbelievable, and not only that she played a great game. She played like she had nothing to lose and she didn’t. I wanted to do more than maker a Wimbledon final, she added. I’m just happy to be back in a Grand Slam final.”

Serena Williams is feeling good towards her standings in the race to the Wimbledon Cup. Serena explained their work ethics towards her and sister Venus:

“She’s a tough opponent,” Serena said. “I think she’ll be the toughest person I’ve played. I’m excited.”

Venus Williams also defeated her opponent, Elena Dementiva, in the same day. She took the victory winning both sets (6-1, 7-6). Venus’ challenger tanked in the first set nervous about playing her. Venus went hard and never let up. After the match Venus talked that she is here to win even if it’s destroying siblings. Venus said:

“It’s every Williams for themself.”

Seeing Venus & Serena play each other is always tedious and entertaining. They both have so much heart for the game. They both are heading to the Finals can’t wait to see them play. Check out the video review below of the matches!

Venus Williams (pictured above) is a part of the advertising campaign, elevision spots as well as a print ad, is expected to be run by a number of international and national broadcasters, including Eurosport, Zee Sports in India, NTV in Russia and the Tennis Channel in the USA. The ads are designed to raise awareness and promote the goal of gender equality and women’s leadership. They are also designed to introduce the Tour’s rising star players as global role models for women’s leadership in their role as Promoters of Gender Equality. The television spots and print advertisements can be viewed on the Tour’s official website.

In addition, Venus Williams’ clothing line, “Eleven,” and her retail partner Steve & Barry’s, announced today that they have created a special Venus Williams/UNESCO tee shirt that will be sold at Steve & Barry’s retail outlets, online at the Tour’s official website and at select Tour tournaments, with the net proceeds from sales to be donated to the UNESCO-Sony Ericsson WTA Tour partnership.
