Today marks what would have been Aaliyah‘s 33rd birthday.

It has been over 11 years since we lost Aaliyah Dana Haughton to a tragic plan accident, however her musical influence still resonates throughout the industry today.

Celebrities have taken to Twitter to honor her memory, including rappers Missy Elliott, Timbaland, Lil Kim and her biggest fan in recent times Drake.

Today marks a sad day in the music industry: the 10th anniversary of Aaliyah’s tragic death.

10 years ago today, Aaliyah Dana Haughton, the young R&B singer known worldwide as Aaliyah, was tragically killed in a plane crash in the Bahamas, putting a sad end to a promising career.

Just before her untimely passing, Aaliyah (born in Brooklyn, and raised in Detroit) had just released her third, self-titled album and had filmed the music video for the project’s second single “Rock the Boat.”

She was also in the middle of filming a new movie “Queen of the Damned,” following her blockbuster debut in “Romeo Must Die.” (FYI: Aaliyah was also in negotiations to star in the “Matrix” as well as “Honey” and a re-make of “Sparkle.”)

But all of that was cut short on August 25th 2001 when Aaliyah, who was 22 at the time, and members of her entourage died after their plane crashed shortly after take-off from the Bahamas following the “Rock the Boat” video shoot.

Though Aaliyah was only able to release three albums during her short time here with us, each one left a significant impact on the music scene then, and still shows its influences today.

“I met Aaliyah when I was about 15 [yrs old]. It was I think at a rehearsal for the Soul Train Awards and someone introduced us. I was so excited to meet her because she was the first girl on the scene. She came out before Monica and I did, she was our inspiration. At the time, record companies did not believe in kid acts and it was just inspiring to see someone that was winning and winning being themselves. When I met her I embraced her, I was so happy to meet her. I told her how much I loved her. She said the same thing about me and we connected. It was a great moment I’ll never forget.

“We [later] performed at a radio event together. I remember going on before her and I could see her in a section where they kept the artists and she was just bobbing her head, really being supportive. It felt like [there] was no competition, or any of that. She was just very, very supportive. Then when she got on to perform, the entire place was singing her songs word for word, and so I was I. I was trying to sing louder than everybody else so she can hear that I knew her stuff and that I was being just as supportive as she was to me.

“There was a moment when I won at, I think, [Soul Train] Lady of Soul [Music Awards]. She sent me flowers saying how proud she was and ‘congratulations.’ I just thought that was so angelic and sweet of her. People say that Aaliyah is angelic and that just made me feel like ‘wow, that’s a moment.’ Other artists supporting another artist when everybody’s trying to put you against each other, which was very special. I was like ‘whoa, that’s really big of her.’”

“The first time I met her, she was extremely quiet. You [weren't] going to get a lot of words out of Aaliyah in a first meeting. It takes a lot of time for her to warm up to people because she had this shyness… I’ve never seen [Missy Elliott] in the type of turmoil and pain that she was in after Aaliyah passed because there’s no replacing the type of friendship that her and Missy had.”

Ciara

“She was true to who she was and she didn’t seem to care about it. The core of her art is to me, heavily, heavily, urban based… It never felt like she was trying to reach across or do anything more than just keep that cool, soulful, heavy, urban core about it… I really respect that and I appreciate that.”

Estelle

“Her purity of voice was incredible… Her vocals and style is what had her stand out above and beyond everyone. When I listen to her voice now, I think, ‘She was killing it. She was a beast.’”

Keyshia Cole

“When I found out that she [had] passed that night, I just cried [while] on the tour bus. That’s amazing for someone to have that affect on other people’s lives. I think why it affected me so much without me knowing her is because she seemed to have a beautiful soul.

“[There was] something about her spirit. She connected before reality TV, before any of that happened in our era. It was something about her that made you connect to her. She seemed like she had a beautiful soul.”

“The energy we created together for people to observe was kind of crazy. We’d be in a room full of people talking to each other and it felt like everyone was listening but it would be just us. It would be like we were the only ones in the room. It was like something was going down in history every time I was with her. Every time I was around her I felt it was the place to be.

“Our time together meant so much that when we got more time, we felt like that [engagement] would be next. She was one of the best people I ever met. Even with the pain I felt, I would do it all over again.”

“The state of R&B in the ’90s, where she stood, she was second to none. She was pretty much the top female. It was a new sound, the production from Timbaland. Everyone had to pay attention. That was just a time I would love to go back to you. Everything was all about us, and it was all about Aaliyah. It would just set her apart from everyone in the ’90s…we came at a great time.”

“When I was on tour her and Joel Silver came to my dressing room to see if I wanted to be a part of the movie. Most people would have their people call, but she came herself.

“I’m like, ‘Is this a trick question? You have to ask me if I want to be in a movie with Aaliyah? Hell yeah.’ We [then] met up in Vancouver to [do] Romeo Must Die. She had a presence on TV that was incredible. It was sexy but kind of gangster.

“We did the [Back in One Piece] video in Mount Vernon and Yonkers. I got to bring Aaliyah to the hood. Not many people can say that. She was easy to talk to and down to earth. Aaliyah made you feel comfortable, with her and with yourself. That’s one hell of a combination.”

“Half these chicks that are doing it right now wouldn’t be doing it [if she were still here]. Aaliyah would be on top. As far as I’m concerned she’s still on top.

“Thank you,” DMX says she would tell Aaliyah if still here. “Thank you for the opportunity. Thank you for memories. They’re all priceless.”

Missy Elliott, who celebrates her 40th birthday today, was featured on VH1′s “Behind the Music” earlier this week, which saw the multi-platinum singer/rapper/producer share stories about her abusive childhood and how she was repeatedly molested by a family member, as well as how she made it into the music industry, her current battle with Graves’ disease and much more.

After revealing to the world for the first time that she was battling an auto-immune disorder called Graves’ Disease in an interview with People Magazine this week … Missy Elliott has released a statement reassuring her fans and supporters who have been concerned for her health.

In the People interview, Missy said that her condition became so bad that she couldn’t even grip a pen tight enough to write … or hold on to a steering wheel good enough to drive a car. The legendary femcee says as she battled the disease, she suffered severe mood swings, dizzy spells, lumps in her throat, bulging eyes and hair loss, among other things, and also had to undergo radiation treatment and take a lot of medication.

In a new statement released today, Missy, who is currently gearing up for a VH1 “Behind the Music” TV special to air June 29th and is also working on a new album, puts her fans at ease by letting them know that she is fine and the disease will not be slowing her down anytime soon.

“There have been some inaccuracies reported in regards to my diagnosis with Graves’ Disease, so I wanted to clear things up. I was diagnosed with Graves’ Disease about three years ago, but it really hasn’t slowed me down at all. I rocked my performance on ‘VH1 Hip Hop Honors” tribute to Timbaland last year. I’ve written and produced a bunch of Grammy-nominated, #1 hits for artists like Keyshia Cole, Monica, and Jazmine Sullivan. I toured the U.K., Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. And on top of all that, I’m working on my new album. I feel great. Under my doctor’s supervision, I’ve been off medication for about a year and I’m completely managing the condition through diet and exercise.”

Missy Elliott is currently working alongside producer/rapper Timbaland on her seventh studio album, tentatively called “Block Party.”

Missy Elliott has been keeping a secret within for the past couple of years.

The rapper/producer revealed to PEOPLE magazine in a recent interview that she has been fighting a battle with Graves disease, an auto-immune disorder.

“I was [driving and] trying to put my foot on the brake, but my leg was jumping,” she revealed. “I couldn’t keep the brake down and almost crashed. I couldn’t write because my nervous system was so bad — I couldn’t even use a pen.”

She continued: “I’m 30 pounds lighter because I’ve been exercising. My thyroid is functioning, so I haven’t had to take medication in about nine months. [But] you live with it for the rest of your life.”

No wonder she’s been off the scene for quite some time now. Good to know she’s doing a lot better though!

And today, 9 years later, people are still remembering Aaliyah Dana Haughton, and talking about how much of an impact she had on the music industry during her time as one of the top female singers in R&B. Before Beyonce, Ciara, Alicia Keys, Keri Hilson and others, we had Aaliyah, and she paved the way for a lot of the female singers you listen to and admire today.

9 years ago on this day, Aaliyah and 8 others (Anthony Dodd, Eric Foreman, Keeth Wallace, Gina Smith, Scott Gallin, Christopher Maldonado, Douglas Kratz and Luis Morales) died tragically in a plane crash off the coast of the Bahamas on their way back home following the “Rock the Boat” music video shoot. Aaliyah was only 22 years old, and her untimely death sent shockwaves across the world….And today, nearly a decade later, she’s still making headlines.

In an e-mail interview with MTV, one of Aaliyah’s comrades, rapper Missy Elliott, shares some of her favorite Aaliyah memories. Check it below:

MTV: When you look around today at some of the current R&B stars, who do you see traces of Aaliyah’s influence in?
Missy Elliott: I think it’s hard for Aaliyah to be duplicated, because she had her own lane. But Ciara is an R&B singer who loves to dance, and Aaliyah was that same kinda artist. We knew when she dropped a record, we couldn’t wait for the video. I think Aaliyah has influenced artists like a Ciara.

MTV: How do you spend a day like this, where everyone is mourning the anniversary of your friend’s passing?
Elliott: I plan to spend my day the same as any other day, because there’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think of [Aaliyah] or watch a video or play her music. I miss her every day.

MTV: Do you know of any update on the plans for an Aaliyah movie?
Elliott: As far as a movie for Aaliyah, I’ve been hearing some things but don’t know how true they are, and out of respect for her family, I would wait until they announce it. That way we will know it’s a fact.

MTV: I’m sure you have so many memories of Aaliyah. What was it like the first time you met her?
Elliott: When me and Tim first went to work with her, we were so nervous. She was such a big star, and I was scared she was gonna be some diva, sipping on tea, with people fixing her hair and nails, and she would say, “What is this music you got! It’s wack!” But when we walked in the studio, her smile made the whole room glow! She was like “Heyyyyy!” and gave us big hugs and made us feel like we were her cousins from down South. She was a very sweet spirit! Never seen her angry as long as I’ve known her, and in this business, that’s unheard of!

MTV: What memory do you revisit most when you think about Aaliyah?
Elliott: We’ve had so many memorable times. My most memorable is when me, her and Tim wore outfits alike! It was burgundy Pony outfits to the awards. Mind you, Aaliyah was petite so her Pony outfit looked so cute on her, but I kept looking at mine during the awards whispering to her saying, “I feel like a big-ass pony for real!” And we laughed and laughed! Too many memories to state them all! If she was still with us, she would still be at the top. Because she always stayed pushing herself to be better.

Rappers Lil Wayne and Missy Elliott teamed up for this freshly leaked track called “All 4 U.” The (unfinished) song is rumored to be featured on the legendary emcee’s forthcoming seventh studio album, Block Party, due at the top of the new year.

The syncopated track features Missy’s trademark blend of rapping and singing, while Weezy delivers an X-rated verse.

“Baby, what’s up with you tonight/ You wanna get busy, I can read your mind,” Missy purrs seductively on the song. Elliott only contributes one verse to “All 4 U” and more than half the song features just the instrumental. A representative for the Virginia native told MTV News on Tuesday (December 29) that the song is unfinished and “still really rough.”

Elliott has kept a low profile since her last album, which featured the Ciara-boosted hit “Lose Control,” was released. She’s appeared sparingly as a guest, including on a track by Keyshia Cole, and contributed to the soundtrack of the “Step Up 2: The Streets.” As far as her own work, however, Block Party — her seventh album — has had a number of delays, most recently being pushed back from a summer 2009 release to the top of 2010.

The 2009 BET Hip Hop Awards went down in Atlanta, GA Saturday (Oct 10). We hear Jay-Z and Young Jeezy opened the show in a big way with a surprise performance! Other tidbits from the show include the late DJ AM being the recipient of the “DJ of the Year” award, Kid & Play popping up during New Boyz‘ performance and Gucci Mane performing like 3 or 4 times. The show also featured performances from Soulja Boy, Ludacris, Jim Jones, Snoop Dogg and more.

The show, hosted by comedian Mike Epps, airs on BET on Tuesday, October 27th at 8/7c and we hear it was actually the best out of the few that have gone on over the past few years.

Rapper Missy Elliot is in the works to produce a film that accurately portrays her life; from her traumatic past to her rise to fame in the 1990s.

“It’s happening; I’ve just got to find a great writer because I wouldn’t want my story watered down,” she tells Elle Magazine. “I went through a lot, and I accomplished a lot, and I want people to know how it all went down.”

Missy, born Melissa Arnette, was repeatedly raped by an older cousin from the age of eight and also witnessed her father abusing her mother. During the 1990s, she became a star and is the only female rapper to have six certified platinum albums.

New music from Missy Elliott from her upcoming album Block Party (Atlantic). This new track, “Best Best”, is produced by Danjahandz and also will be the first single from this new album. I personally thought “Ching-A-Ling” was the first single and “Shake Your Pom Pom” would be the second. I like those two tracks better than this but maybe it’s just me. Block Party will in stores September 9th.

Missy on how she got the name for her album:

I actually chose two. I’m releasing a preview to the album in the summer titled “Fanomenal.” When I saw all the people that entered the contest, I was overwhelmed. So I’m dedicating that one to my fans because they’ve rolled with me since day one. I’m still up in the air about the name for the actual album, but for now it’s “Block Party.” The reason for that is because there are a lot of dance joints on there.

Missy on what we can expect from her album:

This album is probably more musical and melodic than my previous ones. A lot of my albums are really hip-hop-driven, with tinges of other music genres. But this album is hip-hop, with a sort of U.K. hip-hop sound to it.

Missy on the state of Hip Hop:

I hear a lot of great songs. And then I hear some that aren’t so original and creative. Back in the day artists had their own styles. You couldn’t say Heavy D sounded like Rakim, or Salt-N-Pepa sounded like MC Lyte, or Big Daddy Kane sounded like Erick Sermon. These days, people try to follow a formula because they see it’s worked for others. But that keeps them from being original and creative, (or) at least not as original and creative as it used to be before.

TIMBALAND PRESENTS SHOCK VALUE II! » It’s no surprise that music producer Timbaland is already at work on a sequel to his last album Shock Value (Interscope), recently announcing collaborations with the likes of Gwen Stefani, Akon, Dido, Linkin Park, Cher, Kanye West, Celine Dion, Christina Aguilera, and Mary J. Blige. The album, already in post-production now, is set for a rumored Summer/Fall release of this year. Timbaland, said to be the executive of this album, will be doing most of the producing with his protege Danja.

Missy Elliott’s MySpace bulletin confirmed that “Ching-A-Ling” would be the lead single from the movie soundtrack Step Up 2 the Streets, which is in stores February 5th 2008, and possibly included on Missy’s yet-to-be-titled studio album set to be released during first quarter. Missy NEVER disappoints, never. I loved all of her projects but Cookbook has to be my favourite from her music catalog. From what I hear her newest album is going to be dance-oriented so that will be grand, “Ching-A-Ling” is just a taste of what we can expect I’m sure but I’m lovin’ it! It’s sort of the “I-got-my-check-now-let-me-go-get-ready-for-the-club” track! LOL Her music is always so lively and extrovert, which is the complete opposite of her personality in person; she is reeeally short and shy – not shy like “scared” – but shy like “reserved” and asexual, like me.

BET’s Stephen Hill and his long standing commitment to fighting AIDS/HIV was honored with “Live Beats.” “Live Beats: A Night of Musical Mayhem and Tonal Terror Fashioned by Fun(k),” took place this past Tuesday at the Highline Ballroom in New York. R Kelly’s currently on tour with Keyshia Cole, Ne-Yo, and J.Holiday, and the crew touched down in Atlanta last night. I’m hearing Keyshia’s giving a little trouble behind the scenes though. I was reading on Fresh’s site that homegirl wasn’t too happy about her dressing room arrangement (and the show line-up) at the previous show in Columbus, Georgia. She did NOT go on stage that night because she didn’t wanna go BEFORE Ne-Yo! Why? Because she believes that she’s bigger than he is. Wow… Lol. Style Razzi has all the info on that. But it looks like they came to some kind of agreement cause she hit the stage last night in Atlanta. If anyone went to the ATL show last night, PLEASEEEEE hit us up! I wanna know who came first … Keyshia, or Ne-Yo?? Lol!

But on the real, she needs to chill out with that. Drama on the road is not cool, especially when you have to be around these people almost all day long for a period of 2 – 4 months. Wasn’t she the one causing issues a couple of years ago during Kanye’s tour?? It was something between her and Fantasia if I remember correctly.

Well it’s been quite a ride for pop sensation Justin Timberlake from the release of his sophomore effort FutureSex/LoveSounds (Jive/Zomba) last year to the FutureSex/LoveShow world tour he embarked on earlier this year (and apparently continuing through to November 26). Timberlake is set to release the FutureSex/LoveSounds Deluxe Edition (audio/DVD), with added material, including a subtle duet with mega star singer Beyoncé Knowles.
