Pop legend Mariah Carey has been hard at work these past few months to ensure her upcoming era is, as she likes to say, a stone grove smash hit wonder!

Her first step was to team up with R&B’s golden boy Miguel for their co-written and co-produced “#Beautiful” which has unsurprisingly become a knock out hit.

And as far as the video is concerned, Mariah Carey has never looked sexier! Showing some genuine chemistry with her co-star Miguel, Carey managed to come off sexual and in love without going becoming too campy.

“Beautiful,” which features Miguel, is the new track that is set to launch Mariah Carey’s next album. Does it have the potential to be the song of the summer?

Eager to put behind the flop that was “Triumphant” behind her, Mariah has lassoed R&B hitmaker Miguel into sprinkling some of his magic on her material.

The two reportedly co-wrote the slightly rock-tinged record which finds both singers crooning about the irresistible beauty each sees in the other. Miguel even curses (although it’s censored) in the hook to emphasize his bad boyness.

But Mariah doesn’t show such edge as she still giggles like a teenager like she did on her 1997 hit “Honey.”

The only knock on the song really is that it’s a bit too brief at 3:22. As soon as you start to get into it, it’s pretty much over.

While Miguel has been hailed as a savior of R&B, he took his music in a decidedly rock direction when he performed on “Saturday Night Live.” this past weekend.

The singer took the stage with a pair of hater-blocking shades, a cheetah print sleeveless shirt and a bad-ass leather jacket. Miguel’s fluid voice soared, bellowed and shined as he reinvented his hit single “Adorn” with an experimental, non-linear arrangement. The song only became recognizable when it hit the chorus.

But he really turned his new single “How Many Drinks?” inside out. The mellow R&B track was converted into a raging punk-rock anthem with Miguel doing his best Mick Jagger impersonation. While loyal fans might raise an eyebrow at the creative arrangements, it speaks to his creativity as an artist. And hey, at least he’s not spoon-feeding you the same ol’ bullshit.

With talent like this, 2013 is Miguel’s for the taking.

How Many Drinks?

J. Cole has released the visuals for his new single “Power Trip,” featuring R&B singer Miguel, from the North Carolina rapper’s highly anticipated upcoming sophomore album ‘Born Sinner.’ — due out June 25th.

Cole compares the single, which, like most of his music, he produced himself, to Justin Timberlake’s 2002 hit “Cry Me A River.”

“I get excited about that; it’s an opportunity to change things,” the 28-year-old said about producing the track. “It’s almost like the first time I heard ‘Cry Me a River,’ Justin Timberlake. The minute that came on … It hit you a certain kinda way. That was the exciting part.”

I don’t know about you, but I am ready for a new J. Cole album! He’s one of the few lyrically talented rappers out today that can tell a real story through his raps … and I just love that about him. Hurry up June 25th!

After scoring his first Grammy earlier this month, Miguel has released the thought-provoking video for “Candles in the Sun” — a song from the R&B crooner’s sophomore album ‘Kaleidoscope Dream.’

The black-and-white clip focuses on social, political and religious themes, and also makes references to recent tragedies like Hurricane Sandy and the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting.

Miguel said of the video: “It’s so easy to ignore what’s right in front of us sometimes. I wanted to create a song and visual that addressed my everyday concerns of life as I know it in the world that we live in.”

While Chris Brown has been embroiled in scandal over his recent scuffle with fellow R&B star Frank Ocean, he actually stepped out and did a little press about music while he was at the Grammys.

Yes, it was a red carpet interview with Ryan Seacrest, who’s known for being a softball interviewer, but still, it’s good to see Chris venturing back out and speaking with the public instead of remaining in hiding.

Interestingly, when Ryan asked Chris whose music he was listening to, Chris praised “Adorn” singer Miguel for his ‘Kaleidoscope Dream’ effort. (What? Did you expect him to say he was bumpin’ ‘Channel Orange’ in the whip?) He specifically lauded Miguel for embracing traditional R&B and he bemoaned the current state of R&B, which he says is full of gimmicks.

Given his endless string of dance-pop, auto-tuned anthems, Chris knew detractors would turn the statement right back around on him so he readily admitted that some of his music fell under that “gimmicky” category as well. Smart move, Christopher. Self deprecation will disarm even the staunchest of critics.

Chris said he longs for music with real instruments and authenticity. So hopefully his next album will bring us something refreshing.

In the meantime, here’s Chris’ latest electronic dance music collaboration with Afrojack to whet your appetite for gimmicky R&B.

The 55th Annual Grammy Awards were held Sunday night (Feb 10) in Los Angeles, and before the ceremony commenced, the stars were shining outside L.A.’s Staples Center, where fashionable celebs like Beyonce, Rihanna, Chris Brown, Drake, Justin Timberlake, Jennifer Lopez and tons more all posed for photos showing off their hottest looks on the red carpet.

The 2013 Grammy Awards’ red carpet also featured notable appearances from Katy Perry, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Rowland, Wiz Khalifa & Amber Rose, Miguel, Frank Ocean, Adele, Rick Ross, 2 Chainz and many others.

Miguel had a rack of Grammy nominations under his belt, but he wasn’t listed as an official performer. Which is a damn shame since his album ‘Kaleidoscope Dream’ is one of the best R&B albums in recent years.

We’re not sure if Miguel was able to pull a producer’s ear and convince them to shave a few minutes from LL Cool J’s awful closing performance or what, but somehow someway, he and Wiz Khalifa were able to squeeze in a glorious performance of “Adorn” before presenting the award for best Country Solo Performance. Guess McDonald’s isn’t the only one offering two-for-one specials, since the Grammys wants to cut corners and things.

But hats off to Miguel for doing the most with his very little set. He slayed the vocals and made many a lady’s panties wet. Most notably, Kelly Clarkson, who squealed that Miguel’s performance was the “sexiest thing” she ever heard and saw.

Miguel started out the ‘Kaleidoscope Dream’ era wearing classy suits and carrying himself like a gentlemen. But Mig Money has been hitting the gym lately and he’s eager to show off his new body.

Taking a page out of the R. Kelly and Trey Songz book of R&B Lotharios, Miguel took the stage in Stockholm, Sweden and proceeded to simulate sex with an imaginary woman.

The good news is that he also pantomimed putting on a condom before he started hitting the invisible lady with his backstroke. You never know what kind of diseases you can catch from imaginary snatch. Better safe than sorry, bro.

It was all good just a week ago … or was it?

Chris Brown and his now ex girlfriend Karrueche Tran were spotted at Compound nightclub in Atlanta last Saturday night (Sep 29) after the BET Hip-Hop Awards — exactly 5 days before he publicly dumped her on the Internet.

Though they arrived side-by-side, if you look closely, you can clearly see the distance between them. Notice how Karrueche is holding her friend’s hand — instead of Chris’ — as they’re walking in the club.

And once they got inside, Chris ditched her to get drunk, hang out with his celebrity friends and tend to his hosting duties, forcing poor Karrueche to sit on the sidelines with her friends.

Judging by the sad look on Karrueche’s face in the pics, it makes you wonder … did Karrueche already know she was on the chopping block?

Tyrese, Ginuwine and Tank showed up as “TGT,” which the R&B crooners formed years ago, but nothing has come to fruition, until now. The group just signed a deal with Atlantic Records, and their album will be released early next year. “R&B just got a face lift. We’re going to remind ya’ll why you fell in love with R&B music,” Tyrese Gibson announced on the BET Awards red carpet pre-show. “TGT is coming soon.”

Hollywood gathered on a somber note last night (Sat Feb 11) at Clive Davis’ 2012 Pre-Grammy Gala, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, the same hotel where R&B legend Whitney Houston was found dead earlier in the day.

When the sad news broke, there were reports that the annual Clive Davis event would be canceled, but Davis — Houston’s longtime friend and mentor — said that the R&B/Pop icon “would have wanted the music to go on.”

“She loved music and she loved this night that celebrates music,” said Davis, adding that Houston’s family requested that the party continue.

Some of the many celebrities in attendance at the Pre-Grammy Gala and Salute to Industry Icons Honoring Richard Branson and Diana Ross included Diddy, Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige, Quincy Jones, Kelly Rowland, Dr. Dre, Alicia Keys, Swizz Beatz, Wiz Khalifa, Amber Rose, Jamie Foxx, Kim Kardashian, Gabrielle Union and more.

The star-studded event also featured performances from Alicia Keys, Ne-Yo, Pitbull, Marsha Ambrosius, Wiz Khalifa, Jessie J and others. Monica and Brandy were slated to perform their new single “It All Belongs to Me”, but we’re told they were unable to because they were too devastated about Whitney Houston’s passing.

Diana Ross, who was being honored at the event, told a red carpet reporter, “I won’t be able to enjoy it,” when she was asked how she felt about being the night’s guest of honor.

“By now you have all learned of the unspeakably tragic news of our beloved Whitney’s passing,” Clive Davis said at the start of the evening. “I don’t have to mask my emotion in front of a room full of so many dear friends. I am personally devastated by the loss of someone who has meant so much to me for so many years. Whitney was so full of life. She was so looking forward to tonight even though she wasn’t scheduled to perform.”

He continued, “Whitney was a beautiful person and a talent beyond compare. She graced this stage with her regal presence and gave so many memorable performances here over the years. Simply put, Whitney would have wanted the music to go on and her family asked that we carry on.”

The 2011 Soul Train Awards were held in Atlanta at the Fox Theater last Thursday night (Nov 17).

Hosted by Cedric the Entertainer, this year’s Soul Train Awards saw appearances from a variety of celebrities, including R&B singer Keri Hilson, model Amber Rose, actor Lance Gross, NeNe Leakes and Cynthia Bailey from the Real Housewives of Atlanta, Tamar Braxton, our blogger friend Necole Bitchie (who won the award for Best Soul Site — CONGRATS!!), and many more.

Rapper Wale fantasizes about his dream girl (played by America’s Next Top Model winner Bre Scullark) in the music video for his latest single “Lotus Flower Bomb,” from his sophomore album “Ambition.”

The track, which features R&B singer Miguel singing on the hook, is from Wale’s sophomore album “Ambition,” in stores now.

According to Rap-Up.com, the R&B singer is already back in the studio working on his second album, tentative due in March or April of next year.

“Think electronic hip-hop meets classic rock meets great songs,” he said, explaining his next album. “I’m excited to discuss a few topics outside of the romantic experience, but still keep it very relatable.”

“But the fact is that I was not trying to imitate you,” he continued. “I just felt like it was disrespectful. On some real shit, it was cheap and I felt like it was distasteful. The idea behind it wasn’t to mock you or imitate you, it was just to shave my [hair] so I could get a tattoo. For you to say that and bring all that kind of energy to me… It’s album release week so why am I answering questions about Miguel when I should be talking about my album that I worked two years for?”

R&B singers Miguel and Lloyd are currently at war … and it’s all over a haircut!

Lloyd debuted a brand new hairstyle yesterday as he paid a visit to BET’s 106 and Park to promote his new album “King of Hearts.” But according to fellow R&B crooner Miguel, Lloyd’s new cut (which also shows off a new “Guns N Roses” new tattoo he recently got etched into the back of his head) is a direct rip-off from his own style.

Miguel is known for rocking crazy and usual hairstyles … and called Lloyd out (via Twitter) for ripping him off.

The event, held last month in New York City, and hosted by Hollywood hotties Selita Ebanks & Mehcad Brooks, featured performances by some of music’s best and brightest including R&B singers Keri Hilson, Melanie Fiona, Miguel, Lloyd and rap newcomer Wiz Khalifa.

The 2011 Cartoon Network Hall of Game Awards were held Monday (Feb 21) in Santa Monica, CA.

Some of the celebrities who walked the red carpet before entering the Barker Hangar to catch Cartoon Network’s first-ever sports awards show were R&B diva Monica, tennis phenom Venus Williams, pro skateboarder Tony Hawk, NFL player Terrell Owens, rapper Nelly, R&B newcomer Miguel, WNBA player Lisa Leslie and others. The show airs tomorrow (Fri. Feb 25) at 7 PM on Cartoon Network.
