Lots of celebrities gathered in New York City on Monday night (May 7) at the 2012 MET Costume Institute Gala.

Some of the celebs who were spotted showing off their fashion sense on the red carpet of the big event — dubbed the “Oscars of Fashion” — included singers Beyonce, Alicia Keys & Swizz Beatz, Rihanna, Solange; actress Paula Patton; Hip-Hop newcomer (and sh*t starter) Azealia Banks and more.

If you blinked, you missed it (like us), but M.I.A. totally flipped the bird during her performance with Madonna (and Nicki Minaj) at the Super Bowl Sunday night (Feb 5), sparking lots of discussion and lots of finger pointing.

M.I.A. — best known for her hit song “Paper Planes” — flipped her middle finger and swore into the camera right in the middle of her rap solo during Madonna’s “Give Me All Your Luvin” while over 100 million people watched.

“I’mma say this once, yeah, I don’t give a sh*t,” the 36-year-old rapped as she pulled out her middle finger, causing the screen to briefly blur in what looked like a late attempt from producers to cut the camera shot.

The show’s broadcaster NBC, and the NFL, who produces the show, have both apologized, but are blaming each other for the incident.

NFL VP of communications Brian McCarthy said, “‘There was a failure in NBC’s delay system. The obscene gesture in the performance was completely inappropriate, very disappointing, and we apologize to our fans.”

He added that M.I.A. didn’t do anything like that during rehearsals, and the NFL had no reason to believe she would pull a stunt like that during the live show.

NBC spokesman Christopher McCloskey countered the NFL’s claims, holding the NFL fully responsible for the incident and apologizing for their delay in censoring the gesture.

“The NFL hired the talent and produced the halftime show,” he said. “Our system was late to obscure the inappropriate gesture and we apologize to our viewers.”

While M.I.A.’s publicists at her record label Interscope are keeping quiet, a member of her camp claims she was struck with “a case of adrenaline and nerves.”

“She wasn’t thinking,’ said the source, who was with M.I.A. at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. “It wasn’t any kind of statement. She was caught in the moment and she’s incredibly sorry.”

The incident is being compared to Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake‘s infamous “Nipplegate” incident, in which the former’s bare nipple was exposed by the latter after he ‘accidentally’ ripped a piece of her clothing off, which was later described as a “wardrobe malfunction.”

Timberlake quickly distanced himself from the situation, leaving Jackson to face scrutiny from the media alone for some time after.

It’s being said that M.I.A. could get fined hundreds of thousands of dollars as a result of her middle-finger gesture, which occurred during the most watched program in U.S. television history.

Sources close to the situation have revealed to TMZ that because of what has happened with performers in the past, M.I.A. signed a contract with the NFL agreeing to indemnify the league for any money it might be forced to pay if the FCC were to fine NBC.

Sources tell us … aside from the fact that the NFL doesn’t want to pay a huge fine, the organization wants to send a message to performers — don’t you dare screw with us. [TMZ]

CBS was hit with a fine from the United States’ Federal Communications Commission (FCC) worth $550K after Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction, but that fine was later thrown out by a federal appeals court.

The FCC has yet to respond to the incident, but don’t expect them to stay quiet for too long.

Madonna lit up the stage last night (Sun Feb 5) as she put on an impressive performance during the Super Bowl XLVI halftime show in an attempt to show the new generation who the real “Queen of Pop” is, just in case they had forgotten.

Her 12-minute-plus performance set featured renditions of her songs “Vogue,” “Music,” “Give Me All Your Luvin” and “Like a Prayer,” along with guest appearances from rappers Nicki Minaj and M.I.A., Hip-Pop group LMFAO and R&B singer Cee-Lo Green.

Madonna‘s big Super Bowl performance (featuring Nicki Minaj and M.I.A.) is just days away, and the latest buzz surrounding the big show is that R&B singer Cee-Lo Green and Hip-Pop group LMFAO will be joining the ladies on stage.

MTV broke the news earlier this week while citing a report from TMZ.com regarding Madonna’s massive halftime stage set, which reportedly features a series of lights that spell out “Vogue” set into the floor, in reference to the hit single she is rumored to be performing.

In addition to Vogue, Madonna will also be performing “Music” (with LMFAO), her brand new single “Give Me All Your Luvin” (featuring Nicki Minaj and M.I.A.), “Like a Prayer” (with Cee Lo Green), “Ray of Light” and “Holiday.”

Madonna’s 12-minute halftime show will go down this Sunday night (Feb 5) during halftime of Super Bowl XLVI.

The game — which will see the New England Patriots take on the New York Giants — will air live on NBC from the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.

M.I.A. takes the Middle East by storm in her new music video for “Bad Girls,” the first single from her upcoming fourth studio album, due in stores this summer.

Madonna teams up with Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. in her new music video for “Give Me All Your Luvin,” the first single from her upcoming 12th studio album “MDNA,” due in stores March 26th.

The football-themed clip opens up with Nicki and M.I.A. as urban cheerleaders as they march through the city with the Pop Queen by their side, dressed in a dark leather coat and a mini-skirt.

Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. also get a chance to show off their rap skills before the promo clip ends with Madonna exposing the football players as robots.

The video’s release comes just days before the three ladies are set to take the stage together to perform the song Sunday at the Super Bowl.

The new single serves as the first offering from Madonna’s newest album “MDNA,” which is due in stores worldwide on March 26th.

“Paper Planes” singer M.I.A. gave her German fans a concert at the Huxleys today (Wed. Nov 17) in Berlin.

Always pushing the envelope, M.I.A. wore a paint strip of multiple colors on her eyes behind dark sunglasses and had on a blue trench coat with black & white spotted tights and iridescent shorts on top. The singer released her third album /\ /\ /\ Y /\ (MAYA) in July 2010.

M.I.A. released a promo video for her new single “Born Free” last week and in it a little boy’s head is blown off (literally). But that’s not the only incident of extreme violence in the graphic 9 minute clip, which was banned immediately from YouTube after bosses deemed it unsuitable for the website due to the graphic violence and nudity.

In the promo, military police round up red-headed boys in a series of violent raids, transport them to a remote desert location and then force them to run through a minefield, beating those who make it to death. Child actor Ian Hamrick, whose character is shot in the head at close range, has yet to see the full video, but he insists M.I.A. doesn’t deserve criticism for filming the bloody massacre.

“I think she was trying to show violence to end violence,” he told TMZ. “The video is definitely not for kids – I haven’t even seen the full video myself – but, for all the adults and people in different countries who are doing that (killing people) in real life… doing the genocides to whatever – Italians, Africans, wherever it’s from, it’s still genocide (sic). So it’s showing violence to end violence.”

Flavor Flav, Lupe Fiasco and M.I.A. all took the stage this weekend at the 2009 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, CA. M.I.A. performed live on stage Saturday night, during Day 2 of the festival and Lupe and Flav performed during Day 3 of the festival, which was Sunday.

What’s up with your boy Flav though? How old is he? At one point do you take a look at yourself in the mirror and say “Dammit … I need to grow up!” Dude has gotta be pushing 50, no bullsh*t. Lupe Fiasco couldn’t take the Cali heat so he ripped his shirt off when he performed at Day 3 of the festival Sunday afternoon. Three days past her due date, Sri Lankan singer M.I.A. finally gave birth to a healthy baby boy last Wednesday, February 11, 2009. The reports were confirmed after the 31-year-old posted a message to her official MySpace page:

MY BABY WAS BORN WEDNESDAY, HE IS HEALTHY, FINE, BEAUTIFUL AND THE MOST AMZING THING EVER ON THIS PLANET, OF COURSE IM HIS MUM!!!

ME AND BABY ARE PUTTING OUR TOUR DATES FOR 2010 TOGETHER AND MAKING MIX TAPES AND FIGURING OUT A WAY TO BREAK OUT OF THE HOSPITAL!

HOPEFULLY THE WORLD IS BEEN TICKING ALONG AND I AINT MISSED MUCH!

This is the first child for M.I.A., whose given name in Mathangi Arulpragasam, and her musician fiancé, Benjamin Bronfman. The pregnancy was announced last October.

Asked on the Grammys red carpet last Sunday what she most eagerly anticipated about being a new mom, M.I.A. told PEOPLE, “Everything. I think it’s going to be the best thing in the world!”

She then delivered a memorable performance of “Swagga Like Us” with Jay-Z, T.I., Lil Wayne and Kanye West.

Next Sunday, Feb. 22, M.I.A. is expected at the Academy Awards to perform “O Saya,” from Slumdog Millionaire – which is in the running for Best Song.
