The 2011 Soul Train Awards were held in Atlanta at the Fox Theater last Thursday night (Nov 17).

Hosted by Cedric the Entertainer, this year’s Soul Train Awards saw appearances from a variety of celebrities, including R&B singer Keri Hilson, model Amber Rose, actor Lance Gross, NeNe Leakes and Cynthia Bailey from the Real Housewives of Atlanta, Tamar Braxton, our blogger friend Necole Bitchie (who won the award for Best Soul Site — CONGRATS!!), and many more.

The show also featured performances from Mindless Behavior, Common, Cee-Lo, Melanie Fiona, Robin Thicke, Eric Benet, Mary Mary, Gladys Knight, Lloyd, Miguel and a few others.

This song is the latest single from her debut album The Bridge, which has moved over 250,000 units since its release last November. The album opened at #57 on the Billboard 200 chart, where it has since peaked at #27. The Canadian-bred musician just finished her stint as the supporting act (alongside Robin Thicke) on Alicia Keys‘ “Element of Freedom” Tour. Check out Melanie’s new video below…

R&B singer Melanie Fiona took to the stage recently on “Walmart Soundcheck,” and performed a medley of songs from her debut album The Bridge, including “Ay Yo,” “Bang Bang,” “Give it to Me Right,” “Monday Morning” and her latest single “It Kills Me.”

In related news, Alicia Keys spoke to our friends over at Rap-Up.com and had this to say about why she chose Melanie Fiona and Robin Thicke to open for her on her “Freedom” tour:

“It’s actually an extremely musical show and I love the progression of it,” she said. “I think people get a plate full of food that they can really enjoy.” The 12-time Grammy winner sang the praises of the Grammy-nominated songstress, whose debut album The Bridge was released last year. “I really like her very much,” she shared. “She’s a great person. She has a beautiful voice and I think she has a really bright future ahead of her.”

So she was more than happy to help further the “It Kills Me” singer’s burgeoning career by offering her a coveted slot on her arena tour. “I’m glad to be able to have someone who’s just at the cusp of a great career and be able to give them that type of exposure and experience.”

Swizzy recently announced that his divorce from his estranged wife Mashonda (yeah, dude’s still “technically” married), so now he and Alicia are free to show off their relationship at industry events, instead of hiding from cameras and not being pictured together.

The music video for “We Are the World: 25 for Haiti” debuted Friday night (Feb 12) during the opening ceremony for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

This version of the song, featuring vocals from Justin Bieber, Jennifer Hudson, Lil Wayne, Janet Jackson, Miley Cyrus, Jamie Foxx, Mary J. Blige, Kanye West, T-Pain, Usher, Wyclef Jean and much more, is much more contemporary than the original but it fits today’s music era. The song’s original writer and singer Michael Jackson also appears in the song and video (his sister Janet sings the first chorus with footage of Mike thrown in). They also kept one of MJ’s original parts and show footage of him singing it (Nice!).

The 25th Anniversary recording features over 80 artists and performers. The recording of We Are The World 25 For Haiti embodied the same enthusiasm, sense of purpose and generosity as the original recording 25 years ago. Every one of the artists who participated, regardless of genre or generation, walked into the room with their hearts and souls completely open to coming together to help the people of Haiti.

The video shows footage of Haiti and the efforts surrounding its repair, along with footage of the artists mentioned above and more recording the song in the studio. Check it out below…

As she performed a string of hits from her all of her albums, including her most recent album, The Element of Freedom, Alicia brought out Melanie Fiona, Raheem DeVaughn, Marsha Ambrosius (formerly of Floetry) and her long-time backup singer Jermaine Paul to share the stage with her.

One cool thing about this particular show was the fact that anyone with a computer and internet access had the best seat in the house because the entire show was available (for free) online via a live stream from Billboard.com. In a recent interview with our friends over at Rap-Up.com, up and coming R&B soul singer Melanie Fiona said that when she found out she was nominated for a Grammy, she was so overcome with emotion that she broke down crying. The Canadian born and raised singer said she was in Miami when her brother called her with the good news.

“I picked up the phone and my brother was screaming at me and I couldn’t understand what he was saying,” the 24-year-old songstress tells Rap-Up.com. “Once I really understood that I was nominated for a Grammy, I just broke down and started crying. It was the most unforgettable moment.”

While sitting in the Manhattan Rocawear offices last Friday, Fiona got emotional thinking about what she would do if she were to take home the golden gramophone for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for her single “It Kills Me” from her debut album The Bridge. “The thought of winning makes me want to cry…that would be the first thing I would do if I won is cry,” she reveals. “Every time people asked me what do you see for yourself in the next five years, I’ve been saying I wanted a Grammy because I feel like that’s a high bar you set for yourself as an artist and you always strive to get there.”

While acknowledging the strong competition in the category with fellow nominees such as Beyoncé and Jazmine Sullivan, Fiona knows there is a reason why her song was chosen. “It’s the caliber of women I’m with in the category that is such an honor and makes it a victory already for me,” she says. “But I feel like it is the honest emotion that I had singing that record and the story behind it that affects people and makes it a winner. It’s something that everyone who has been in love has gone through.”

So what does the Universal Motown artist plan to wear on the big night? “I have no idea!” she laughs. “In my mind, it’s like every hot dress that I’ve ever thought about wearing, it has to supercede that by like 10 degrees because this is the dream, this is the Grammys.”

Jay Sean may be new to us, but from what we hear, he’s been doing the damn thing oveseas since 2005! His first U.S. single “Down” (featuring labelmate Lil Wayne) is currently sitting at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, after taking the Black Eyed Peas‘ spot and spending a week at the #1 position.

Jay Sean (born Kamalijit Singh Jhooti) is a British Indian Pop/R&B singer/songwriter, born in West London, England to parents who migrated to the U.K. from Punjab, India. He started his music career overseas under Virgin Records and he signed to Cash Money Records over here in the U.S. back in 2008.

Jay and his bosses Birdman and Slim from Cash Money hosted a listening session last night at New York City’s greenhouse nightclub. Executives and artists from Universal Republic (Cash Money’s parent label). R&B singer/songwriter Melanie Fiona was also on hand to help celebrate her labelmate’s recent success of being the first Cash Money artist to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 this year.
