The 2011 Soul Train Awards were held in Atlanta at the Fox Theater last Thursday night (Nov 17).

Hosted by Cedric the Entertainer, this year’s Soul Train Awards saw appearances from a variety of celebrities, including R&B singer Keri Hilson, model Amber Rose, actor Lance Gross, NeNe Leakes and Cynthia Bailey from the Real Housewives of Atlanta, Tamar Braxton, our blogger friend Necole Bitchie (who won the award for Best Soul Site — CONGRATS!!), and many more.

The show also featured performances from Mindless Behavior, Common, Cee-Lo, Melanie Fiona, Robin Thicke, Eric Benet, Mary Mary, Gladys Knight, Lloyd, Miguel and a few others.

The Soul Train Awards also paid tribute to the late Heavy D midway through the ceremony with a touching video of the rapper accepting a Soul Train award for 1990′s “Big Time,” and performances from Big Daddy Kane, Naughty By Nature, Kurtis Blow and Goodie Mob.

The hit movie “Precious” (nominated for an Oscar) took home a total of 6 awards Friday night (Feb 26) at the 41st Annual NAACP Image Awards, which aired live on FOX from Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium.

Newcomer Gabourey Sidibe was awarded with “Outstanding Actress,” while Mo’Nique picked up the “Outstanding Supporting Actress” award, Lee Daniels won the “Outstanding Director” award and Geoffrey Fletcher was named “Outstanding Writer.” And the film as a collective won “Outstanding Motion Picture of the Year” and “Best Independent Film.”

The music video for “We Are the World: 25 for Haiti” debuted Friday night (Feb 12) during the opening ceremony for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

This version of the song, featuring vocals from Justin Bieber, Jennifer Hudson, Lil Wayne, Janet Jackson, Miley Cyrus, Jamie Foxx, Mary J. Blige, Kanye West, T-Pain, Usher, Wyclef Jean and much more, is much more contemporary than the original but it fits today’s music era. The song’s original writer and singer Michael Jackson also appears in the song and video (his sister Janet sings the first chorus with footage of Mike thrown in). They also kept one of MJ’s original parts and show footage of him singing it (Nice!).

The 25th Anniversary recording features over 80 artists and performers. The recording of We Are The World 25 For Haiti embodied the same enthusiasm, sense of purpose and generosity as the original recording 25 years ago. Every one of the artists who participated, regardless of genre or generation, walked into the room with their hearts and souls completely open to coming together to help the people of Haiti.

BET Networks recently announced via press release that rappers Jay-Z, Fabolous and Young Jeezy and gospel duo Mary Mary have all been added to the official line-up of performers for the 2009 BET Awards. The annual ceremony’s star-studded line-up of performers already includes platinum-selling artists like Beyonce, Kanye West, The Dream, Soulja Boy, Ne-Yo and Maxwell so the new additions to the roster will no doubt be in good company.

The popular African American entertainment network also announced that Queen Latifah, Taraji P. Henson, Sherri Shepherd, Idris Elba, Paula Patton and Solange Knowles have all been confirmed as presenters at the show, which will take place live via Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium on Sunday, June 28th at 8:00 P.M.

Actor/comedian Jamie Foxx is set to host the show. Hit up the show’s official website for more details, including the nominees, honorees and everything else in between!

Gospel singing group Mary Mary performed on stage Thursday evening at the 40th Annual GMA Dove Awards, which were held at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tennessee.

The ladies of Mary Mary, who are a part of the judges panel on BET’s “Sunday Best,” received an award for Urban Recorded Song of the Year for their song “Get Up.”

Gospel singer/songwriter Kirk Franklin, who hosts BET’s “Sunday Best” presented an award along with actor Billy Baldwin. Kirk also grabbed the award for Urban Album of the Year for his 10th studio album “The Fight of My Life.”

R&B singers Ne-Yo and Keri Hilson, along with Gospel singing group Mary Mary and musical producing legend Jimmy Jam all attended Grammy Career Day 2009 in Los Angeles, CA. In preparation for this weekend’s Grammy Awards, the event was held at the University of Southern California campus and also featured appearances from Jesse McCartney and and music producing duo Stargate. All of the celebrities made up one big panel who spoke to students at USC.

A cheering audience of music career aspirants greeted panelists for the day’s first event: a Super Panel comprised of current Grammy nominee Ne-Yo, McCartney, Hilson, EMI Music Publishing president/West Coast Creative Big Jon Platt and The Recording Academy chairman/producer Jimmy Jam. Moderated by Recording Academy West regional director Lizzy Moore, the hour-long session touched on various subjects from songwriting and production to publishing. On the subject of songwriting, McCartney advised fledgling songwriters that “when you try to fit a certain genre or mold, you fail. Write what you know. That’s your template.” Cautioning that “your spot in this business is not etched in stone,” Ne-Yo recommended that students finish school and follow the “3 P’s” in their career endeavors: passion, persistence and patience. “It doesn’t matter how much money you make if you can’t count it,” he emphasized. “It’s also difficult to write a song if you can’t read or write. Being prepared and following the 3 P’s will get you where you’re trying to go.”

That session was followed by 11 concurrent workshops focusing on various fields: vocals, music direction, jazz, production, songwriting, artist management, engineering, publishing, music & visual media, rock and women in music. The industry professionals participating in these mini-seminars included Concord Records executive VP John Burk, Universal Music Publishing executive VP of creative affairs Tom Sturges, managers Tina Davis (Chris Brown) and Brian Avnet (Eric Benét), “American Idol” music director Rickey Minor, producer Harvey Mason Jr., Fox Music senior VP Mike Knobloch and Cuervo Entertainment president Javier Willis.

Treating an standing-room-only audience to an inside peek at the creative process, songwriter panelists Lamont Dozier (Motown’s Holland-Dozier-Holland), Sean Garrett and Hilson partially composed a song on the spot using student suggestions for subject matter and tempo. Rounding out the day was a student concert featuring the 2009 Grammy Jazz Ensembles (choir, combo and band). Lending its support of the event while promoting hearing health and conservation was the Starkey Hearing Foundation in partnership with the Grammy Foundation.
