"Precious" // The New York Times

The New York Times has a preview on the upcoming movie “Precious” directed by Lee Daniels (producer of Oscar-winning film “Monster’s Ball”). The movie stars Mo’Nique, Paula Patton, Mariah Carey, and newcomer Gabourey Sidibe, pictured above on the cover of the Times. The article explores not only the story of Precious but also process that it took to make this film. From having studios reject the story to casting Gabourey Sidibe and Mo’Nique as her “demon” mother. The article also goes into the inspiration behind the film. Below are some quotes that struck us and a link to the whole article. It is well worth the read!

As the script was being written, Daniels began to figure out the financing of the movie. “Getting Sapphire’s permission was only half the challenge,” Daniels explained. “ ‘Shadowboxer’ hadn’t done so well, so I found myself back at Square 1. It was very, very hard to get financing for ‘Precious.’ All the studios said no. They didn’t want to make a film about a 350-pound black girl who is abused. Everybody kept saying no. My whole life was no. It was just a bunch of nos.”

Mariah Carey & Universal Korea CEO Yang Bum-Jun // Press Conference for Her "Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel" Album in Korea

Mariah Carey is currently in full promo mode all the way on the other side of the world in South Korea! The R&B/pop singer attended a press conference early Tuesday (Oct 13) in Seoul to promote her latest album, Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel.

Clad in the same tight, all-black, form-fitting one-piece dress and rocking a mane full of the iconic curls she made famous almost two decades ago, she greeted the press in Korean saying “Ahnyeong-ha-sae-yo,” and showing off her voluptuous curves.

“They say that if you say something enough you begin to believe it and then it becomes true and that’s a theory some people have so when people ask me (what my secret is), I say I’m eternally 12,” she joked.

Mariah Carey // Press Conference for Her New "Forever" Fragrance

Singer Mariah Carey signed autographs, took pictures and spoke to the press as she showcased her new “Forever” fragrance at Macy’s Herald Square Tuesday (Sep 29) in New York City.

Mariah’s latest album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, dropped on the same day and is in stores now. Billboard says the album should sell about 160,000 – 170,000 copies, which is low for her considering her last album, E=MC2, sold over 460,000 copies in its first week. And the album before that, The Emancipation of Mimi, debuted at the top of the charts with over 400,000 sold. So it’s looking like her latest album’s numbers won’t be reaching anywhere close to the last few she’s released.

Columnist Roger Friedman had a chance to listen to Mariah Carey’s upcoming album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, and has revealed that the official first single will be a gospel-tinged track titled “I Want to Know What Love Is.” The track was originally recorded by British-American rock band Foreigner but has been redone as a ballad.

I heard the Foreigner song yesterday along with all of “Memoirs” and let me tell you: Mariah’s got a hit on her hands along the lines of “Emancipation of Mimi.” The hour-long CD is ballad-centric. Written and produced with The Dream and Tricky (I know, but these are their stage names), “Memoirs” boasts a lot of singles. Starting with the Foreigner song is a canny move in these uncertain times. By the time its run is over, a new generation will think “I Want to Know What Love Is” is a Mariah Carey song.

He also revealed the titles of the other tracks on the album, in no particular order: “Betcha,” “Obsessed,” “H.A.T.E.U.,” “Candy Bling,” “Ribbon,” “Standing O’s,” “Impossible,” “It’s a Wrap,” “Inseparable,” “Up Out My Face,” “More than Just Friends,” and “Angels Cry.”

Friedman also describes the album as “radio ready” and “what the kids want,” and mentions that there are no more songs about Eminem. We kind of figured the latter would happen, especially after the rapper’s latest diss track in which he talks about releasing pictures he has of Mariah. As for the album being for the radio and “what the kids want”, it doesn’t make us any more excited. The radio doesn’t really have much music with substance now-a-days and when “Obsessed” surfaced, the “kids” were all into but look how that played out. Nevertheless, we’ll wait till the album drops to properly judge it.

Mariah Carey - "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" album cover

Mariah Carey has re-hired her former PR representative Cindi Berger for her new album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. Berger was the reason for Carey’s hit album Emancipation of Mimi becoming the big success it was; but then she went on to be fired in 2004. Now, it looks as if she’s back and ready to make “Memoirs” a hit. They have started by claiming that “Obsessed” was not in fact Maria’s first single, but only a “summer trifle [that] was a lot of fun.” Reports are stating that the official first single will be a powerhouse ballad along the lines of “Vision of Love”.

In other MC news, her album has been pushed back once more to September 29th and her newly re-hired publicist Cindi Berger has been quick to release a statement about it:

“Record release dates change all the time. It’s nothing unusual and it doesn’t signal anything. There are a lot of moving parts to Mariah’s professional life… She’s making sure the record is how she wants it to be and it’s no big deal.”

It’s pretty clear that they are forgetting about meeting deadlines, performances, etc. to take their time on the album. The album was first supposed to hit stores August 25th, six days before the Grammy deadline. Now, it is being released more than a month later. We’re rooting for Mariah and hopefully she can prove she’s still got it once the “official” first single is released.

Mariah Carey & Nick Cannon // Eminem

Without explicitly mentioning anyone’s name, Nick Cannon recently took to his Twitter with a series of biblical/inspirational quotes to let off some steam regarding Eminem’s most recent diss track towards Nick and and his wife Mariah Carey.
