Jordin Sparks was by far not the first choice to play “Sparkle” in the upcoming movie remake.

During a recent interview with Access Hollywood, Whitney Houston revealed that Aaliyah was originally suppose to star in the film:

“This was [Aaliyah’s] movie, when we brought it to her, she was so enthusiastic about it and she wanted it, to do it so badly. She was our Sparkle. Unfortunately, it just didn’t go that way. I put it down. I said, ‘My Sparkle has gone to a better place,’ then we just left it alone.”

We can only imagine how great this movie would have turned out if Aaliyah was still with us today.

The word on the sidewalk is that singers Jason Derulo, who was recently linked to actress Tika Sumpter, is now dating singer Jordin Sparks.

According to People.com, Jason and his new girlfriend Jordin celebrated his 22nd birthday Sunday night (Sep 25) — a few days after his actual birthday on the 21st — with a few friends and music industry execs at Phillipe Chow in West Hollywood.

Derulo’s rep confirmed to People.com that he and Sparks “officially dating,” while an unnamed source says the pair got cozy with each other at the intimate birthday celebration.

“Jordin would sing to him occasionally through the night in his ear if her head was nested on his shoulder,” the eyewitness said. “He was excited to spend some [quality time] with Jordin in LA. … The two left together and continued the celebration.” (And we all know what means!! **Wink**)

Jason was previously linked to actress Tika Sumpter (‘Gossip Girl’ and ‘The Game’), who appeared in his “It Girl” music video, and has ironically just been cast with Jordin in the upcoming remake of “Sparkle.”

Jordin has reportedly lost over 30 pounds over the past few months through weight training and changing up her diet. According to recent reports, the “American Idol” winner is currently down to a size 6.

The music video for “We Are the World: 25 for Haiti” debuted Friday night (Feb 12) during the opening ceremony for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

This version of the song, featuring vocals from Justin Bieber, Jennifer Hudson, Lil Wayne, Janet Jackson, Miley Cyrus, Jamie Foxx, Mary J. Blige, Kanye West, T-Pain, Usher, Wyclef Jean and much more, is much more contemporary than the original but it fits today’s music era. The song’s original writer and singer Michael Jackson also appears in the song and video (his sister Janet sings the first chorus with footage of Mike thrown in). They also kept one of MJ’s original parts and show footage of him singing it (Nice!).

The 25th Anniversary recording features over 80 artists and performers. The recording of We Are The World 25 For Haiti embodied the same enthusiasm, sense of purpose and generosity as the original recording 25 years ago. Every one of the artists who participated, regardless of genre or generation, walked into the room with their hearts and souls completely open to coming together to help the people of Haiti.

In an effort to raise money for Haitian earthquake relief, a gang of singers, rappers, producers, musicians and other celebrities showed up at Jim Henson Studios yesterday (Mon. Feb 1) in Hollywood to record “We Are the World 25 Years for Haiti,” a remake of Michael Jackson‘s famous “We Are the World” song, which raised at least $30 million for African humanitarian programs 25 years ago.

Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie came together and rounded up folks like Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Jennifer Hudson, Wyclef Jean, Jamie Foxx, Justin Bieber, LL Cool J, Usher, Keri Hilson, Brandy and a ton of other celebrities to lay down vocals and instrumentals for the charity single.

The song and accompanying music video will premiere on NBC next Friday (Feb. 12th) during the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics. Check out 30+ pictures of celebrities banding together for a good cause below…

No word on exactly why Ciara was axed but Jordin says that she’s happy to be a part of the big tour.

“Oh my gosh, they need to keep Paula,” the season six winner said. “It would be so different without her on the show… She was the one who usually came back and was like, ‘Are you guys doing okay? Are you fine?’ And I definitely think they need her. She’s amazing and deserves it.”

Pop singer Jordin Sparks hung out with the kids at a children’s hospital for a few hours this past Friday (Jul 17) in Boston, Massachusetts. The American Idol season 6 winner, whose sophomore album Battlefield is in stores today, signed autographs and took pictures with the patients bringing them all smiles to their faces.

The youngest American Idol winner and platinum selling artist Jordin Sparks returns with her sophomore album Battlefield. Sparks made a splash on the scene not when she AI, but more so with her hit “No Air,” a duet with Chris Brown. While the song granted her a Grammy Nomination, her self-titled debut album only peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 album chart. Now, she’s back with a hot new single and an even more impressive second album. I have spent days listening to the album and here’s my track by track review:

Walking On Snow: The first guitar line of this track sounds a lot like the beginning of Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone” and leaves you to believe that the opening track of this album will be a hit. Unfortunately, the extremely poppish song is only mediocre. But it has a nice beat that will certainly have you moving and Jordin naturally sounds good on it even though the track isn’t truly representative of her talent. I can easily see someone like Hilary Duff on this…the only difference is that Jordin’s vocals are much better. (3/5)

Battlefield: The Ryan Tedder produced track serves as Jordin’s lead single. Surprisingly, this only peaked at No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100. The lyrics and Jordin’s vocals match perfectly to deliver an extremely catchy pop song with a slight rock edge. Easily one of the best tracks on the album. (4/5)

Don’t Let It Go To Your Head: The album’s third track is a cover of the original song by Fefe Dobson. Fefe’s version is much edgier and has a rock sound while this version focuses more on Jordin’s vocals and has a more simple production. But there is no doubt that Jordin delivers. The only thing is that Fefe’s version coincides more with the lyrics. As Jordin sings to her lover telling him not to let how she feels about him go to his head, you still get the feeling that she can’t do without him. Overall, Jordin’s vocals are on point and it’s a nice track. (3.5/5)

S.O.S. (Let The Music Play): This is dance-pop at its best and you can’t listen to this without moving. The track will serve as the album’s second single and is inspired by the 1983 hit “Let the Music Play” by Shannon. Simply put, “S.O.S.” is a track to listen to if you’re in the mood to dance. (3.5/5)

It Takes More: In this Andrea Martin produced track, Jordin sings to her lover that he’s “the only one not worth waiting for” because he basically comes in and out of her life whenever he pleases. It’s good to see Jordin doing more tracks like this that empower females rather than the Hannah Montana sounding tracks that were on her debut (“Shy Boy,” “Now You Tell Me,” “Young And In Love”). She’s moved to tracks that are a bit more mature and they work for her! (3.5/5)

Watch You Go: One of the best songs on the album! If you’re going to sing about loving someone, this is how it should be done! The production is on point and vocally, Jordin more than delivers (especially on the bridge where she sings her heart out). I’ve never seen a pop song sang with such emotion and at this point, you’ll probably wonder why Jordin is still doing pop when her vocals can clearly carry R&B. (4.5/5)

No Parade: A beautiful song and easily one of the best on the album. Immediately when the piano begins, you know it’s one of those songs to listen to when your heart is broken and Jordin’s vocals don’t make it any better. She sings with raw emotion and makes you feel the song, whether you want to or not. If you’re going through a breakup and are listening to this, have a box of tissues close; especially the last time she sings the chorus. (5/5)

Let It Rain: A nice song about letting go of all the tears and fears you once held and “[letting] it rain.” The track is co-written and produced by Toby Gad (“If I Were A Boy”). The build up to the chorus pays off once it starts. This is an enjoyable track you can bob your head to, but the production of it kind of takes away from the meaning. (3.5/5)

Emergency (911): I would never have imagined Jordin doing a pop/rock/dance song like this but she pulls it off well. She sings to her lover that she’s dying of “dance deprivation, emotional starvation” and that she needs him there with her. Jordin also co-wrote the song along with Toby Gad and Lindy Robbins. (3.5/5)

Was I The Only One: Another ballad where Jordin asks if she was the only one who fell in love because she doesn’t understand why they are saying goodbye. Vocally, she sounds very nice and keeps it simple by not hitting her usual high notes. Jordin also receives credit for co-writing the song. (3.8/5)

Faith: Jordin pens this next track with Gad and Robbins. It’s a gospel-inspired ballad that showcases her vocals while telling those in desperate times to have a little faith. Another track makes you wonder why she isn’t doing R&B. (4.5/5)

The Cure: The last track on the standard edition and also my favorite track. Jordin sings to a guy that’s been left by his woman, telling him that she will be his cure if he comes with his heart. I can leave this song on repeat and never get tired of it. The production and instruments are amazing and when matched with Jordin’s vocals, the song is flawless. The song makes you feel like whatever you’re going through will end and you’ll be on top of the world. This track should definitely be the third single! I can see this doing amazing on the charts! I’m even more surprised that she is co-writer of the song. (5/5)

Deluxe Edition:

Papercut: This is the first bonus track on the deluxe edition. Penned by the team that wrote “Faith,” Jordin compares her hurt to a paper cut singing that even though it’s deep and burns, she’s okay and will survive. Nothing special and I would have rather seen a track like “The Cure” or “Worth The Wait” (a bonus from her debut) as an extra track. (3.5/5)

Postcard: Another track that could have been traded. Naturally, her vocals are amazing but the song isn’t anything special. With the title of the track, you can easily tell what the song is about. (4/5)

There is no doubt in my mind that with the right promotion and management, Jordin Sparks will stay in the game for a while and will eventually make her way to the top. Her sophomore effort is an example that the “sophomore jinx” doesn’t happen to everyone. Battlefield is easily superior to her platinum debut. Her songs have gotten more mature and she’s written four of the best songs on the album. Vocally, she effortlessly beats out some of the top artists currently out. She is reminiscent of a young Mariah Carey and with time, she will only get better. I would really like her to try an R&B album. She has the vocals to do it and it might suit her. Simply put, Jordin has established herself as a real artist with Battlefield and hopefully this album will see the success that it deserves.

Overall, I give the album a very solid B. Battlefield will be in stores this Tuesday July 21st.

Olympic champion swimmer Michael Phelps was honored to receive the Sports Achievement Award at former champion boxer’s Muhammad Ali‘s Celebrity Fight Night event, where Oscar winner actor Forest Whitaker also received the Celebrity Fight Night Entertainer Award.

The Celebrity Fight Night Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded in 1994 by Jimmy Walker. It supports the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, as well as numerous other charities.

R&B singer Alicia Keys attended the National Black Theatre’s Communication Arts Program Symposium Friday in New York City. In other Alicia news, she recently announced that despite her talented musical background, she had to learn how to play the cello for her role in The Secret Life of Bees, on DVD March 31st. She added that even though she stopped practicing after filming wrapped, she does have plans on pursuing the instrument in the future.

“I had to work hard at it and I was constantly practicing, constantly learning and re-learning the proper way to play. It takes a year or so just to learn how to hold the bow properly and use it the right way, so just making it feel effortless and look effortless was a challenge. It had to look as if I’d been playing for 15 or 20 years. That took a lot of practice – but I’m used to discipline and practice … I didn’t play after finishing the film but I do want to rediscover it and I will probably start again from the beginning and learn properly,” said the star.”

Grammy nominated and platinum-selling recording artists, Jonas Brothers, today announced the dates and cities for “The Jonas Brothers World Tour 2009.” The tour, which will take the band to three continents, will feature new music taken from the June 15 worldwide release of their upcoming Hollywood Records album. “The Jonas Brothers World Tour 2009,” presented by Burger King(R), kicks off in Dallas at New Cowboys Stadium on June 20 and will take the band throughout the United States and Canada. In addition to their 44-city North American trek, Jonas Brothers will also play three European dates including recently sold-out shows at Paris’ Zenith Arena and London’s Wembley Arena plus a just-added date at Madrid’s Palacio De Deportes. American Idol Jordin Sparks has publicly made it known that she has a crush on fellow teen singer Chris Brown. But unfortunately for her, she’s traveling down a one-way street. This is what Chris Brown had to say at Fashion Rocks:

“I heard that [she has a crush on me]. But when we did that video, I didn’t feel that chemistry. I didn’t feel that. When they yell action, you have to put on a certain performance, but as far as off-camera: there’s no connection.”

Ouch! I know one person who won’t be quick to name off their crushes in the future…

“They thought it was a cyst,” she explained, according to Britain’s Press Association. “When they opened it up they realized it was more.”

The surgery was a success, and now that Naomi is in perfect health, she has plans on starting a family very soon. Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m sure Naomi’s a good person and there’s a chance that she could be a really good mom. BUT! I believe there are people on this earth (women, of course) who should not be allowed to re-produce and bring children into the world. And in my humble opinion, Naomi Campbell is at the top of that list. Her temper just doesn’t cut it with me. Say her kid stays out a few minutes past curfew. How do you think Naomi’s gonna punish him/her? Homegirl went upside her maid’s head with a blackberry just for wearing her pants. Imagine what she’d do to her own kid! I shudder at the thought…

In other Naomi news, yesterday marked the start of 200 hours of community service the supermodel was sentenced to after admitting to assaulting police during a fit over a lost bag at Heathrow airport. But according to a few “inside sources,” she’s in the back doing secretary work and being “treated like a princess.” A total flipside to what she was ordered to do this time last year when she was on her hands and knees cleaning bathrooms.

JORDIN SPARKS DEFENDS “PURITY RINGS”: According to pop singer Jordin Sparks, “not everybody wants to be a slut.” The 18-year-old American Idol winner made that comment in response to remarks made by 2008 MTV VMA host Russell Brand. During his opening monologue, Brand said a few jokes about the Jonas Brothers and their “purity rings,” [ VIDEO ] suggesting that they should be taking advantage of their celebrity status to win dates with the ladies. So when Jordin hit the stage [ VIDEO ] with John Legend to introduce T.I., she said the following:

“I just have one thing to say about promise rings. It’s not bad to wear a promise ring,” Sparks told the crowd, “because not everybody – guy or girl – wants to be a slut.”

Ouch!

50 CENT WINS VISITATION RIGHTS WITH SON: Rapper 50 Cent can see his son more frequently thanks to a ruling by a family court judge earlier this week. Originally, the vitamin water spokesman was only allowed to see his 11-year-old son, Marquise, one week out of the summer every year due to a court stipluation taken out by the boy’s mother, Shaniqua Tompkins. But now 50 can see his son every other weekend until an October 22nd custody trial where another judge will decide permanently who the boy will permanently stay with.

But it doesn’t look too good for 50 right now. He let his mouth run before his brain was able to catch up and stop it right after he left the court. When he was asked if the judge’s increase on visitiation would change his lifestyle, he bluntly said no:

“I’m going to hang out with some hoes, make some movies, make some music, and continue to kick it.”

And Shanequa’s lawyers are going to use that particular comment against the rapper in October. “This is exactly what we are worried about,” said attorney Paul Catsandonis. “We don’t want Marquise to be in an environment like that.” … Idiot!

The 2008 Video Music Awards aired Sunday night and yours truly is here to bring you the 411 on all of the hottest (and not so hot) styles worn at the show! There were many hot styles worn to the show, but first and foremost, I gotta show some love to the men, because if you take out the select few that I will talk about later on in the post, just about every guy was dressed to impress! Some of the best dressed male celebs of the night were Ludacris, Ne-Yo, LL Cool J, T.I, John Legend, and Chris Brown. Ludacris looked like Mr. Urban High Fashion wearing Gucci from head to toe (tie included), Ne-Yo also looked good rocking Gucci from head to toe, LL Cool J lost the bedazzled tee’s and kept it simple yet classy in Gucci, John Legend really gave an edge to the classic white button up, black tie, and pants look by adding a fly white leather jacket, and Chris Brown decided not to wear his favorite red carpet designer and opted for a Louis Vuitton Jacket, Cassett Jeans, and Dior kicks. I was hoping that the ladies would represent after seeing how fly most of the guys looked but, they didn’t. Some looks that did catch my eyes were from Ciara (minus the hair), Vanessa Simmons, Angela Simmons, and Britney Spears. Ciara wore Christian Louboutin pumps with a silver D&G dress and a very cute Jimmy Choo Tube Clutch, the hair was a little out there but other than that her outfit was very cute! Vanessa Simmons wore wore a beautiful black and red checkerboard dress and Angela Simmons looked fashion forward in her dress matched with hot pink Versace platforms. Brittaney Spears looked fab in a Vintage Atelier Versace dress and Jimmy Choo heels.

Some more looks I thought were cute came from Jordin Sparks, Pink, Rihanna (not the shoes), and Solange. Jordin Sparks looked very cute in a Betsey Johnson Evening Sequin Café de Paris Dress with Sergio Rossi Heels. I fell in love with her Pantera gold feather ear cuff! I thought Pink’s red and black Alexis LaMontange dress fit her style perfectly, the same with Solange. I think if anyone else would have tried to rock her Moshino dress, it just would not have been the same! The dress is very different and because she is know as being the “different” Knowls sister … it fits her. Rihanna rock’d the red carpet as usual wearing a Peter Pilotto Skirt, Patricia Field Bustier, and T-Strap Cesare Paciotti pumps.

Now it’s time for my worst dressed picks! Keri Hilson, David Banner, T-Pain, Fat Man Scoop, Lil Wayne, and Lupe Fiasco are all on the top of my “What in the hell were you thinking list!” Keri Hilson’s outfit went totally wrong when she paired a royal blue Opening Ceremony Dress with Gucci Babouska studded Boots, but im sure your not surprised. For some reason Keri always finds herself on the worst dress lists for red carpets. I’m not sure what designer David Banner was wearing, but the “nerdy prep” look defiantly does not work for him. The color choice also didn’t compliment his complexion. I have no words for Lupe and Wayne, I just wouldn’t know where to begin. Although T-Pain did look a hot mess, this was actually an upgrade compared to his past red carpet disasters.

Last but not least we have Fat Man Scoop whose wife looked great, but he opted to rock boxers and an undershirt. I know he was probably attempting to plug his TV show but you just don’t wear pajamas to an award show, that’s just … tacky. What do you guys think? Who are your picks for best and worst dressed?

The recording of the next episode of FNMTV went down last night in L.A. and many guests appear on the show. Jordin Sparks was there as a co-host commentator and judge looking hot! Diddy was there in support of Donnie Klang to premiere the video for his single “Take You There”. While Santogold also performed last night. This episode will air tomorrow,  Friday, August 8th.
