The 2012 Golden Globe Awards were hosted by Ricky Gervais (for the third time in a row) live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills Sunday night (Jan 15).

Big winners for the night included George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Idris Elba, and the movies “The Artist” and “The Descendants.”

Morgan Freeman was also honored during the three-hour ceremony, with Freeman taking home the Cecil B. De Mille Award, presented to him by legendary actor Sidney Poitier, which Freeman said was an honor in itself.

Pop diva Madonna also took home a Golden Globe Award for best song for “Masterpiece,” from her film “W.E.,” which she wrote and directed. She shared the award with co-writers Julie Frost and Jimmy Harry.

In the  new issue, which hits newsstands May 2, “Stringer Bell” discusses producing for the Jiggaman, his transition from his role on ‘The Wire’ to his upcoming flick ‘Thor’ and plenty more.

Widely known for his role as Stringer Bell on HBO’s “The Wire,” British actor Idris Elba says that he isn’t a fan of “buffoonish characters like Madea of Big Momma.”

The “Daddy’s Little Girls” actor was recently invited to speak at Rutgers University, and when asked on his opinion on the Spike Lee vs. Tyler Perry debate, Idris said:

“Can I be candid?” he asks before turning to face the audience directly. “I don’t like all of Tyler Perry’s films. Yes, I did work with Tyler for ‘Daddy’s Little Girls’ because it portrayed a positive image of a black father. I am happy for Tyler’s success…we need Tyler Perry…by going to support his movies, we need to show economic strength. But we are also responsible for elevating film. I’m not with buffoonish characters like Madea or Big Momma.”

Idris also offered his candid thoughts on the lack of diversity amongst Golden Globe and Oscar nominees.

“Halle Berry and I were the only two black actors nominated for this year’s Golden Globes (Idris for Luther and Halle for Frankie & Alice). The Oscars aren’t designed for us…let’s focus on making more films.” (Source)

Idris Elba sounds like a pretty intelligent guy! Though it’s safe to say that we don’t think Mr. Elba will be working with Mr. Perry (or Mr. Lawrence) anytime soon…

Chris Brown and his “Takers” co-star Idris Elba laugh it up with BET personalities Rocsi and Terrence J as they tape an episode of 106 & Park Tuesday (Aug 24) in New York City. “Takers” also stars T.I., Michael Ealy, Hayden Christenssen, Zoe Saldana and more, and is in theaters now.

While on BET’s 106 & Park, Chris Brown touched on a number of topics, answered fan questions and cleared up two things. For one, he said his tears for his idol Michael Jackson at this year’s BET awards were 100% real and un-staged. He also put rumors of him and Usher going on tour together to rest, adding that a joint-tour with the “OMG” singer could possibly happen in the future.

“At first we were talking about it, but I think maybe something in the future. But right now, I’m just doing the whole Chris Breezy thing,”

When asked about why exactly he broke down at the BET Awards during his tribute performance to the King of Pop, Chris said:

“A lot of people don’t know, I was going to see Michael Jackson the day he died. I was on my way to the Staples Center to see him [the day he died] … When I heard ‘Man in the Mirror,’ the words started speaking to me in my personal life. It just touched me. It wasn’t fake. I know people were trying to put extras on it, but everything was genuine. That was my ultimate apology, hands down.”

BET Networks recently announced via press release that rappers Jay-Z, Fabolous and Young Jeezy and gospel duo Mary Mary have all been added to the official line-up of performers for the 2009 BET Awards. The annual ceremony’s star-studded line-up of performers already includes platinum-selling artists like Beyonce, Kanye West, The Dream, Soulja Boy, Ne-Yo and Maxwell so the new additions to the roster will no doubt be in good company.

The popular African American entertainment network also announced that Queen Latifah, Taraji P. Henson, Sherri Shepherd, Idris Elba, Paula Patton and Solange Knowles have all been confirmed as presenters at the show, which will take place live via Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium on Sunday, June 28th at 8:00 P.M.

ATHLETE MARION JONES BEGINS SERVING PRISON SENTENCE » Former Olympic gold-medal winner Marion Jones started her 6-month sentence behind bars in a federal prison in Texas on Friday, reports People. Jones arrived a little before noon at the Federal Medical Center-Carswell in Fort Worth, Texas.

As previously reported, the athlete will have to perform 800 hours of community service during her 6-month prison sentence. According to People, Jones, who used steroids distributed by the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative – the same lab that supplied steroids to athletes who included New York Yankees star Jason Giambi – is the first professional sports figure to receive prison time. But she probably won’t be the last.

YOLANDA ADAMS BEING INVESTIGATED BY THE IRS » Gospel singer Yolanda Adams is currently under investigation per request of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), reports The Houston Chronicle. After failing to show up for an appointment last month to explain her financial affairs, the entertainer has been forced to turn over documents, and the IRS is attempting to determine her tax liability and is currently figuring out ways how to collect on the debt.

A 2005 Ocwen application said Adams earned $40,000 a month and listed $8 million in assets — including an $800,000 trust account, $4.9 million in other personal holdings and jewelry worth $1.5 million. She owns a home worth more than $2 million in Houston’s Royal Oaks Country Club subdivision.

The IRS also wants to know about her endorsements and royalties as well as music companies and foundations with whom she is affiliated. Houston entertainment lawyer Ricky Anderson, who represents Adams, said Wednesday that he was unaware of the lawsuit and declined to comment until he could look at the IRS filings and reach Adams, who is featured on a gospel cruise to the Bahamas this week.

BEYONCE AND IDRIS ELBA TO STAR IN NEW MOVIE TITLED “OBSESSED” » Singer/Actress Beyonce and actor Idris Elba have been picked to star in a new thriller titled Obsessed. The Screen Gems’ thriller will have Elba playing the role of an asset manager with an overly attractive wife (played by Beyonce) continuing her thriving career. However, the film takes a drastic turn when a temp office worker begins stalking Elba’s character. Obsessed will be directed by Steve Shill. He is best known for his work on HBO shows including The Sopranos, The Wire, Rome, Deadwood, and Big Love.

Beyonce’s father and manager, Mathew Knowles, is said to be executive producing the movie, alongside his daughter.

Black Hollywood showed up and showed out at the first ever BET Honors, which were held in Washington D.C. Saturday night. The ladies glammed it up on the red carpet, and the fellas got their GQ on. Honorees included R&B star Alicia Keys and supermodel Tyra Banks, Time Warner board chairman Richard D. Parsons and Princeton professor Cornel West. “For me, I’m just a girl still from Harlem, and here I am,” Keys said. “It’s a tremendous feeling to do what you love and for people to love what you do. … People are honoring me for doing what my heart tells me to do, (and that is) so fulfilling.” Actor Blair Underwood presented Keys’ award, while her musical idol, Stevie Wonder, performed a special rendition of of “As” especially for her. John Legend, Wyclef Jean, Gladys Knight, Brian McKnight, Jill Scott and Raheem DeVaughn also performed. The show is set to air sometime in February. Check your local listings for more details.
