Today marks a sad day in the music industry: the 10th anniversary of Aaliyah’s tragic death.

10 years ago today, Aaliyah Dana Haughton, the young R&B singer known worldwide as Aaliyah, was tragically killed in a plane crash in the Bahamas, putting a sad end to a promising career.

Just before her untimely passing, Aaliyah (born in Brooklyn, and raised in Detroit) had just released her third, self-titled album and had filmed the music video for the project’s second single “Rock the Boat.”

She was also in the middle of filming a new movie “Queen of the Damned,” following her blockbuster debut in “Romeo Must Die.” (FYI: Aaliyah was also in negotiations to star in the “Matrix” as well as “Honey” and a re-make of “Sparkle.”)

But all of that was cut short on August 25th 2001 when Aaliyah, who was 22 at the time, and members of her entourage died after their plane crashed shortly after take-off from the Bahamas following the “Rock the Boat” video shoot.

Though Aaliyah was only able to release three albums during her short time here with us, each one left a significant impact on the music scene then, and still shows its influences today.

Brandy

“I met Aaliyah when I was about 15 [yrs old]. It was I think at a rehearsal for the Soul Train Awards and someone introduced us. I was so excited to meet her because she was the first girl on the scene. She came out before Monica and I did, she was our inspiration. At the time, record companies did not believe in kid acts and it was just inspiring to see someone that was winning and winning being themselves. When I met her I embraced her, I was so happy to meet her. I told her how much I loved her. She said the same thing about me and we connected. It was a great moment I’ll never forget.

“We [later] performed at a radio event together. I remember going on before her and I could see her in a section where they kept the artists and she was just bobbing her head, really being supportive. It felt like [there] was no competition, or any of that. She was just very, very supportive. Then when she got on to perform, the entire place was singing her songs word for word, and so I was I. I was trying to sing louder than everybody else so she can hear that I knew her stuff and that I was being just as supportive as she was to me.

“There was a moment when I won at, I think, [Soul Train] Lady of Soul [Music Awards]. She sent me flowers saying how proud she was and ‘congratulations.’ I just thought that was so angelic and sweet of her. People say that Aaliyah is angelic and that just made me feel like ‘wow, that’s a moment.’ Other artists supporting another artist when everybody’s trying to put you against each other, which was very special. I was like ‘whoa, that’s really big of her.’”

Monica

“The first time I met her, she was extremely quiet. You [weren't] going to get a lot of words out of Aaliyah in a first meeting. It takes a lot of time for her to warm up to people because she had this shyness… I’ve never seen [Missy Elliott] in the type of turmoil and pain that she was in after Aaliyah passed because there’s no replacing the type of friendship that her and Missy had.”

Ciara

“She was true to who she was and she didn’t seem to care about it. The core of her art is to me, heavily, heavily, urban based… It never felt like she was trying to reach across or do anything more than just keep that cool, soulful, heavy, urban core about it… I really respect that and I appreciate that.”

Estelle

“Her purity of voice was incredible… Her vocals and style is what had her stand out above and beyond everyone. When I listen to her voice now, I think, ‘She was killing it. She was a beast.’”

Keyshia Cole

“When I found out that she [had] passed that night, I just cried [while] on the tour bus. That’s amazing for someone to have that affect on other people’s lives. I think why it affected me so much without me knowing her is because she seemed to have a beautiful soul.

“[There was] something about her spirit. She connected before reality TV, before any of that happened in our era. It was something about her that made you connect to her. She seemed like she had a beautiful soul.”

“She was always working and shooting movies. She was always gone for like four months at a time, then come back and be gone for another month. She had to rehearse and I was doing my own thing, so it was really hard for us to get long stretches of time together. When you’re with someone like that you buy into a life of being separate, but again, I couldn’t help my feelings.

“The energy we created together for people to observe was kind of crazy. We’d be in a room full of people talking to each other and it felt like everyone was listening but it would be just us. It would be like we were the only ones in the room. It was like something was going down in history every time I was with her. Every time I was around her I felt it was the place to be.

“Our time together meant so much that when we got more time, we felt like that [engagement] would be next. She was one of the best people I ever met. Even with the pain I felt, I would do it all over again.”

Ginuwine

“The state of R&B in the ’90s, where she stood, she was second to none. She was pretty much the top female. It was a new sound, the production from Timbaland. Everyone had to pay attention. That was just a time I would love to go back to you. Everything was all about us, and it was all about Aaliyah. It would just set her apart from everyone in the ’90s…we came at a great time.”

DMX

“When I was on tour her and Joel Silver came to my dressing room to see if I wanted to be a part of the movie. Most people would have their people call, but she came herself.

“I’m like, ‘Is this a trick question? You have to ask me if I want to be in a movie with Aaliyah? Hell yeah.’ We [then] met up in Vancouver to [do] Romeo Must Die. She had a presence on TV that was incredible. It was sexy but kind of gangster.

“We did the [Back in One Piece] video in Mount Vernon and Yonkers. I got to bring Aaliyah to the hood. Not many people can say that. She was easy to talk to and down to earth. Aaliyah made you feel comfortable, with her and with yourself. That’s one hell of a combination.”

“Half these chicks that are doing it right now wouldn’t be doing it [if she were still here]. Aaliyah would be on top. As far as I’m concerned she’s still on top.

“Thank you,” DMX says she would tell Aaliyah if still here. “Thank you for the opportunity. Thank you for memories. They’re all priceless.”

Could Beyonce and Aaliyah rival one another today as entertainers? Had Aaliyah still been alive, Ginuwine thinks so.

R&B songstress Aaliyah Haughton would have turned 32 years old back in January. After her tragic death in 2001, many female artists drew comparison to the R&B singer with fierce dance moves. However, if you ask Ginuwine, Beyonce is the artist that reminds him the most of his beloved friend.

“Aaliyah was in a class by herself,” Ginuwine tells The BoomBox. “If you’re talking triple threat of a writer, singer and actress, that would probably be Beyoncé. If Aaliyah were still here, she and Beyoncé would be neck and neck.”

Beyoncé’s career with Destiny’s Child was already at the pinnacle of success when Aaliyah was alive. The trio released their self-titled debut in 1998, and Aaliyah passed just three years after that.

Both also went on to pursue careers in film alongside music. Aaliyah added actress to her resume with roles in 2000′s “Romeo Must Die” and a lead role in 2002′s “Queen of the Damned,” which was released after the singer passed away.

Ginuwine made some pretty bold comments here. Aaliyah was good, but Beyonce is GREAT! To state they would be neck and neck is just wishful thinking.

Ginuwine wants the ladies to get freaky in his newest music video release “Batteries” featuring Trina. The track comes off the R&B singer’s upcoming album Elgin, due in stores February 15th. Pornstar Roxy Reynolds (pictured above) makes several appearances in the sexy clip, and though you can hear Trina in the background,  you never get a chance to see her face.

They say the stuff is a Vodka-based alcoholic beverage that tastes EXACTLY like chocolate milk, and it will be released nationally sometime this year. And soon, you’ll be able to see this hilarious picture of Ginuwine dressed up as a “chocolate” milkman on billboards in Las Vegas as well as on television, thanks to a planned national TV commercial.

Speaking on the shoot, the R&B crooner said:

“It was a blast, getting to dress up as a milkman for the day. I really got into character.”

Ginuwine is back again! The R&B crooner is returning with a new album, Elgin, and took some time to speak with HoneyMag.com about his latest musical work, his wife (former rapper Sole), and the alleged affair with Lisa Raye plus a bunch of other things.

Here’s what he said about the rumored Lisa Raye affair

“The Lisa Raye affair, which lit up the blogs, was definitely not helpful either. It was totally made up – but I see how it came about. Anytime an artist does something with another artist and you see the chemistry you know there are going to be whispers. I picked her for my video because she is a great artist. We met on set at a play we did in Detroit, and from that experience I knew I wanted to work with her again. So when we were casting the video for my single, “Last Chance,” I called her. We had a lot of chemistry on set and were playing and hugging and all of that, and people made way more of it than it really was.

“My wife was pissed off. But I had to reel her back in and let her know that I’m not going to jeopardize what we have for anyone. We have a family, we have kids, we are married. The whole experience taught me how much the business has changed. We were playing, hugging and had chemistry. A lot of times you have to be careful because if you do that in front of the wrong people… Everyone is looking for a story so you have to watch what you do.”

And here’s what he said about his new album:

“I’m looking for that same energy and love from fans with my latest album. I call this one Elgin, it’s my real name. It reflects where I am as an artist, as a father, and as a husband. I’m still talking about love and relationships. That’s my strength. I don’t think anyone can talk about that subject the way I can. I’m a person that represents love in every aspect of the word. But there’s a maturity level there too. I’m not as care free as I once was. I’m way more skeptical of things and way more careful of what I do. Some of the songs on there are a bit risque, but you have to do that to keep the spice.

“I chose to limit collaborations on this album because I like to give the audience all of me. I like for you to get me and me, only. I’m selfish when it comes to my albums. And if I’m gonna get someone its gonna be some women. I have Lil Kim and Trina on an album called Batteries.”

He went on to speak about his wife, former female rapper Sole:

“My love for my wife is my number one inspiration though. We’ve had our ups and downs and we’ve had our times where we thought we were gonna separate, but I think a strong woman makes a strong man. She’s been able to stick in there with me and I’ve put her through the mud. I attribute my success to her and she deserves every good thing I could possibly do for her and I try to do that as much as I can now.

“My wife came into my life at a time when I was crazy. My dad had just killed himself and my mom died a year later from cancer. I just knew that she was the one. Since then, I’ve always told people that if you have to ask, that’s not the one. Deep inside, you know. But guys can get a little scared. Ultimately, marrying her was an easy choice. We were already living together. We already had a family. So I said, let me let her have her day – because the actual wedding day is for the women. It’s not been easy. Marriage is an ongoing process. You never master it.”

It’s about time that Ginuwine finally talked about this after a year of chatter. Isn’t it funny how celebrities will allow rumors to float around without addressing it. To them, it keep there name in the news.

Singer Ginuwine can’t seem to control himself in his latest video release “Touch Me.”

Looks like Ginuwine and Timbaland no longer get alone. The former R&B King (Yes, we said it!) recently spoke with VIBE about his rift with the super producer:

“He really hasn’t been interested in working with me, so I can’t speak on the present,” Ginuwine tells VIBE of Timbaland. “But back in the days, it spoke for itself as far as him being the most sought after producer. Music was boring until he came out with that new sound. Back then, I would have described it as futuristic because it was something that had not been done and people jumped on it. If it wasn’t for him making that style as hot as it is, a lot of producers that’s out now maybe wouldn’t even be here.”

“Me and Tim were real close at one point. A lot of the times that I reached out, there were a bunch of excuses,” explains Ginuwine. “I begged and pleaded with him because I felt a certain way but I was like, is it just a bad vibe that I’m picking up on? Maybe I’m bugging out, I don’t know. But it came out to be true and I still feel like he owes me an apology for that. The reason I’m pissed off at him now is because of what he did. I would’ve been cool and not bothered him if he would’ve said, ‘Nah, I’m too busy,’ or gave me the lame excuse like he’s been giving me. But don’t do it and then not do what you’re supposed to do [to promote the song].”

Wow. Sorry to hear that Ginuwine, but it is what it is. Unfortunately, this is what we call the shady life of the Music Industry. It happens all of the time. When you are hot, everyone wants to work with you, but once you fall off, no one wants to work with you.

Is it just us or is hip-hop getting old?!

Rapper Fabolous turned 32 years old Wednesday (Nov 18) and everyone in New York City, including Rick Ross, Diddy, Amber Rose, Ryan Leslie, Adrienne Bailon and more, came out to party with him at the Hotel on Rivington that night.

Bossip says Fabo and Adrienne were extra close throughout the evening.

Adrienne Bailon appeared to be Fab’s right hand. Even with all of NY in the building, it appeared that the two were in arms reach of each other the whole night. Our spy didn’t see the two leave together but that’s normally what happens when you’re trying to keep things under wraps.

R&B singers Ginuwine, Joe and Chico DeBarge performed Sunday afternoon (Jul 26) at the Central Park SummerStage concert series in New York City.

According to a review of the show, Ginuwine wasn’t able to offer his best performance due to him being hoarse after just wrapping up a promo tour for his new album, A Man’s Thoughts. But they say he made up for it in the end when he joined Joe and Chico for the show’s final segment, which was a tribute to Michael Jackson, and busted out the moonwalk during a performance of “Billie Jean.”

Here’s a brand new music video from R&B singer Ginuwine for his first single, “Last chance” featuring appearances from Lisa Raye and Tyrese. The track will be featured on Ginuwine’s upcoming album, A Man’s Thoughts, set to be released June 2nd 2009. Peep the Juwan Lee directed video above.

The New York Post’s bogus story detailing an intimate dinner between singer Ginuwine and actress Lisa Raye-McKissick was shot down by a rep who reminded AOL Black Voices that Ginuwine was a married man and Lisa Raye is still a legally married woman.

On Sunday, March 8 in the ‘Page Six’ column of the daily newspaper, it was reported that McCoy and Ginuwine dined together at Mr. Chow in Beverly Hills and “after posing for the paparazzi outside, they proceeded to kiss throughout their meal.”

“There’s absolutely no truth to this story. My client and Ginuwine are just friends. Ginuwine is a married man! LisaRaye is still legally a married woman and has absolutely no time to even think about dating as she works to get both her personal and professional affairs in order,” said publicist Lynn Allen Jeter.

The 41-year-old actress and the 33-year-old R&B singer, who is married to female rapper Sole, have known each other for years, according to reps for Lisa Raye, and after she attended a recent party of his, he extended an off for her to star in the new music video for his single “Last Chance.” Peep more photos of the two on the set of the video when you continue reading.
