The 2011 Soul Train Awards were held in Atlanta at the Fox Theater last Thursday night (Nov 17).

Hosted by Cedric the Entertainer, this year’s Soul Train Awards saw appearances from a variety of celebrities, including R&B singer Keri Hilson, model Amber Rose, actor Lance Gross, NeNe Leakes and Cynthia Bailey from the Real Housewives of Atlanta, Tamar Braxton, our blogger friend Necole Bitchie (who won the award for Best Soul Site — CONGRATS!!), and many more.

The show also featured performances from Mindless Behavior, Common, Cee-Lo, Melanie Fiona, Robin Thicke, Eric Benet, Mary Mary, Gladys Knight, Lloyd, Miguel and a few others.

The Soul Train Awards also paid tribute to the late Heavy D midway through the ceremony with a touching video of the rapper accepting a Soul Train award for 1990′s “Big Time,” and performances from Big Daddy Kane, Naughty By Nature, Kurtis Blow and Goodie Mob.

Chrisette took to her blog yesterday morning to discuss Ricky Rozay’s behavior at the 2010 Soul Train Awards Wednesday night. According to sources, the “BMF” rapper walked out of the show when he lost “Best Hip Hop Song” to Eminem…..and now Mama Chrisette has a few choice words for Mr. Ross. Check ‘em out below…

If this is the way hip hop is then I denounce it. This is not about ego. This is about what I can bring to the world. My life is for the people. I live to give. It’s my desire to bring life and freedom light and love everywhere I go. Upward mobility in the brown skinned community.

Who stands off at an award show because they don’t win? An award is winning at being as “stuck in a category” as possible. Congratulations to all the trophy holders who won at being the most like every one else. I could have sworn hip hop was on the come up. But apparently rapping is about venting, bashing, chauvinistic pigging, and EGO. Not cool. Don’t LET me start rapping. (album in stores november 30th)

Rapper Rick Ross gives us a taste of that good ole “Aston Martin Music” in his newest music video release featuring R&B singer Chrisette Michele and Young Money rapper Drake. The track is the third single off Ross’ album Teflon Don.

Did you know that singer Chrisette Michele recently cut ALL of her hair off? If you didn’t, now you do! And Chrisette has a message for you if you disagree with or question her decision to go completely natural. Read on for her recent blog entry to Vibe.com:

The turning point for me to shave my head was when I was out on tour. I had some pieces glued into my head because I didn’t want to dye my own hair, and the glued on piece would not come out of my head so I said I’m shaving my head because this is ridiculous. This does not make me Black. This does not make me a great singer; this makes me have a piece of hair stuck to my head and I was like, “I’m done, I can’t do this anymore.” So I decided I wanted to find beauty in a different way without doing something that was so damaging to something that was precious to me, which is my hair. I could have gotten it out but I said, “No, I’m just gonna shave it off.” And by going all the way back natural it was a much easier route and it was a lot less damaging.

My stylist once put a lace-front on me for a show that I did. I wanted to try it out. They take adhesive and put it around the edges of your hair and then they lay stocking material on top of that adhesive and then the rest of the stocking has hair attached to it and then this stocking material blends into your face and then they take makeup and put it on top of that stocking material and blend that into your face. I’m not sure if that’s healthy. I think you might get pimples and I don’t like pimples. I knew girls who shaved around their hairlines so that their lace fronts would lay better. I don’t know about that.

This is not serious. No one’s doing surgery. No one got fed because I shaved my head. I just felt like changing my hair. My advice to women all around the country is to keep it simple. Don’t make everything such a big deal and don’t be so judgmental as to why other people do things. Jst enjoy them. Nobody knows why a rose is growing out of the ground or why it’s red. They just go and smell it then go on about their day. Sometimes I wish, especially in African American community, that Black women would just calm down and have a little bit more fun.

One thing that’s really humbling is, most of the time when I’m performing there will be a row of women in the front and most of them will have whatever hair cut I’m rocking at the time whether that’s the Epiphany cut or back in the day if it was it’s the flippy waves that were longer. It’s an incredible moment because even though it’s not that serious and it’s just hair, it’s also the way that I choose to express myself and for someone to agree with me and kind of touch my hand and say, “I’m down for who you are and who you decided to be.” It’s their way?to me?of saying thank you

A large number of celebrities took part in helping BET raise money for Haiti relief Friday night (Feb 5) at the AmericanAirlines Arena in Miami, FL during the BET SOS Saving Ourselves – Help for Haiti benefit concert, which was hosted by Queen Latifah, Diddy and Pharrell Williams. Artists like Chris Brown, Monica, Ludacris, Justin Bieber, Nas and Haiti’s own Wyclef Jean took to the stage and performed while folks like Common, Spike Lee, Trey Songz, Mike Tyson and more manned the telephone lines.

The 2009 Soul Train Awards, hosted by Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard, were held earlier this month (Tues. Nov 3) at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta and were aired last night (Sun. Nov 3) on BET. We posted the arrival photos shortly after the show was recorded at the beginning of the month and here are the pictures from inside the show!

Folks like Robin Thicke, Ludacris, Keri Hilson, Fantasia and more performed. Trey Songz and Toni Braxton opened up the show with Braxton’s new single “So Yesterday” and ended their performance with a big ol’ passionate smooch on the lips! Toni says it was all planned and her husband knew about it well in advance so any speculation about that causing the separation between she and her husband is reportedly false.

Ashanti sure is looking good these days! It’s hard to believe Nelly let all of that go. She and Ja Rule reunited on stage at the 2009 VH1 Hip Hop Honors Wednesday night (Sep 23), which saw performances from Wale, Kid Rock, Method Man & Redman, Eminem and more. The ceremony honored the pioneers of Def Jam along with the people, past and present, who helped create the label and build it into what it is today. Hosted by comedian Tracy Morgan, the show is set to make its television debut only on VH1 on Tuesday, October 13th at 9 pm.

It’s only right that the first Def Jam artist to be honored was the label’s foundation and face for so many years, LL Cool J. The Roots started it off with “Rock the Bells.” Black Thought ripped the first verse of the record, then gave way for a special guest: Eminem. Last year, Slim Shady publicly expressed his love for LL during a phone prank on DJ Tony Touch’s Shade 45 radio show. Spitting the second verse of “Rock the Bells” on Wednesday night, Em sounded almost exactly like the legend who inspired him. “Now I’m worldwide known/ Whether you like it or not/ My one-man band is Cut Creator…/ When he’s on the fader/ What’s my DJ’s name?” “Cut Creator!” The crowd yelled. Later, Kid Rock paid tribute to LL with “I’m Bad.” The Kid also DJed during the show, as did Ed Lover.

The second performance was from one of Def Jam’s signature groups, Public Enemy. Chuck D was immediately electrifying with the opening words for “Rebel Without a Pause”: “Yes, the rhythm, the rebel.” Chuck still has one of the most recognizable and commanding voices in all of music, not just rap. Flavor Flav came out wearing a white tuxedo jacket, matching top hat and a black bow tie. PE arguably had the performance of the night with help from the Roots, S1W and Boots Riley. The Long Island-bred rap chiefs were just born for the stage. The entire crowd was on their feet cheering. After their performance, Flav was seen talking to Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan in the audience.

Another bricklaying squad for the house that Russell and Rick built was, undoubtedly, the Beastie Boys. KRS-One, Wale and the Gym Class Heroes did a rocking rendition of “No Sleep Till Brooklyn.” Travis McCoy, who wore a black T-shirt with the names “DJ AM” and “Roc Raida” in the shape of the Run-DMC logo, took on the first verse. The Blastmaster, who is a former HHH honoree himself, took verse two and ended by saying, “Adam, get well soon,” referring to Adam Yauch, who is currently battling cancer. Wale finished off the song and later paid tribute to Kanye West, wearing a backpack and rapping “Touch the Sky.”

When Onyx performed “Slam” it felt like the group had stepped out of a time capsule: They looked almost exactly the same and still had that insane energy that made them famous. During his verse, Sticky Fingaz climbed on top of a large speaker. Rather than climb down when he finished, Stick climbed into the balcony. Other performers included Rick Ross, Fabolous, Foxy Brown, Redman, Method Man, Mary J. Blige, EPMD, Ghostface Killah, Chrissette Michele, Warren G, Trey Songz, the reunion of Ashanti and Ja Rule, Ludacris and DMX — many of whom teamed up with the Roots for a show-closing medley of Def Jam hits.

Offstage, Ja Rule and DMX had their own reunion. The two came up together as close friends and later turned to bitter enemies, even dissing each other on records. As X was walking out, Ja was returning to his seat, and the pair saw each other, hugged and talked for a few moments.

Rapper DMX walked the Red Carpet of the 2009 VH1 Hip Hop Honors Wednesday night (Sep 23) at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York City. His appearance at this year’s show marked his first public appearance/performance in at least three years. And we all know all of the drama he’s been getting himself into in the meantime.

Good news, right? Yeah … in a way. It’s also sort of “bad news” because she only sold 83,000 copies, which makes her debut the lowest selling #1 debuting album in history. But hey, at least she’s #1!
