THE ENGAGEMENT IS OFF! » Certified cornball Nick Cannon and Victoria’s Secret model Selita Ebanks have called off their engagement and split up, Ebanks’s rep confirms to PEOPLE exclusively.

Selita and Nick are taking a break to focus on their careers but still very much love each other and remain the best of friends.

The breakup comes just five months after the Drumline actor made a proposal that lit up New York’s Times Square – literally – as he asked Ebanks to marry him with the help of a jumbotron. By August, Cannon, 26, was more measured when it came to nailing down wedding details, telling PEOPLE, “We haven’t really talked about a lot of that stuff. You’ve got to take it slow.” (Maybe he was taking it a bit TOO slow — Dustin) As for Ebanks, she said earlier in the summer that the pair had some fundamental differences between their ideal ceremony. “He’s all about the bling and having a big wedding. With Kanye West’s “Graduation” (Def Jam) having trumped 50 Cent’s “Curtis” (G-Unit/Interscope) in debut week sales, Def Jam honchos Antonio “L.A.” Reid and Jay-Z are celebrating. But they acknowledge West’s numbers (957,000) were bolstered by the competition, and that another sales war is not in their plans.

JAY-Z: We all know that the battle was a one-off. That’s not a template on how to do business. We know that we have challenges ahead of us [in regards to the industry's downturn] but we also know that the consumption of music is at an all-time high as well.

L.A. REID: I am really optimistic about the state of the industry. When you look at these numbers, if I add in [West's] catalog sales, he’s sold 1 million records in one week. That seemed to be a thing of the past and everyone had written it off, saying that people no longer bought albums in these numbers.

50 CENT: I am very excited to have participated in one of the biggest album release weeks in the last two years. Collectively, we have sold hundreds of thousands of units in our debut week. This marks a great moment for hip-hop music, one that will go down in history.

T.I. has grabbed 9 second annual BET Hip-Hop Awards nominations. The self-proclaimed “King of the South” took home 3 awards out of his 8 nominations at last year’s show. Lil Wayne is second in total nominations this year, with seven. Kanye West grabbed six, Common got five, Jay-Z got four, and Ludacris and 50 Cent got three a piece. The Second Annual BET Hip-Hop Awards will air on television via BET on October 17th. Check your local listings for more details.

When Screamfest ‘07 hit NYC last week (Wednesday August 22 2007) they didn’t hold anything back! In addition to the headliners and supporting acts (I’m sure you know who they are by now), you had the likes of 50 Cent, Kanye West, and Jay-Z sharing the same stage! Yeah, you read it correctly … Kanye West and 50 Cent. A HISTORIC MOMENT in Hip-Hop indeed! Diddy, Da Brat, Wyclef Jean, and Yung Berg showed up too. I wish I could’ve been there!

SIDENOTE: I wonder how many “damn you’re late” comments I’m going to get! I still have love for y’all though! Haha.
