A penny that used to be worth only 1 cent back in the late 1700s was recently sold at a Florida action for a record $1.38 million!

The pricey penny is supposed to be “historic,” as it was made at the Mint in Philadelphia in 1793, the first year that the United States started making its own coins after gaining independence from Great Britain.

A once-cent copper coin from the earliest days of the U.S. Mint in 1793 has sold for a record $1.38 million at a Florida auction.

James Halperin of Texas-based Heritage Auctions told The Associated Press on Saturday that the sale was “the most a United States copper coin has ever sold for at auction.” The coin was made at the Mint in Philadelphia in 1793, the first year that the U.S. made its own coins.

Heritage officials said in a news release that the name of the buyer was not revealed but that he was “a major collector.” One of the coin’s earliest owners was a well-known Baltimore banker, Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr.

“Mr. Eliasberg was nicknamed, ‘the king of coins’ because before his death in 1976 he assembled a collection that consisted of at least one example of every coin ever made at the United States Mint, a feat never duplicated,” Halperin said in the news release.

The final bid for the coin last week was one of the largest sales at the Florida United Numismatists coin show and annual convention, which runs through Sunday. Halperin said a five-dollar gold piece from 1829 also was sold.

Halperin said there remain a few hundred 1793 coins in different condition, but that the one auctioned off Wednesday night is rare because it wasn’t in circulation.

Officials say it shows no wear on its lettering, its Lady Liberty face or the chain of 13 linking rings on its back.

“This coin is known as a ‘Chain Cent’ because the central design on the back is a chain of 13 linking rings. It represented the solidarity of the 13 original colonies, but some critics claimed the chain was symbolic of slavery, and the design was quickly changed from rings to a wreath,” Halperin said in the news release.

Halperin said the auction had $60 million in transactions.

Well, a childhood friend of mine and I were strolling along the local street in Shinsaibashi, Osaka. Being around the extra-genki Osaka-jins and salesladies screaming ‘Irashaimasse’ from every direction for the ongoing New Year Sales has never made us feel more at home. On our way to catch up over coffee, I walked into this store to check some things. Truth is, I didn’t even notice the posters. When I looked around, each corner had posters that printed ‘fucking sale’. I didn’t know how to react but what caught me by surprise was that none of the people around me seem to understand the profanity. My friend Sarah and I, both of mixed Japanese descent, both bilingual in Japanese and English, were struck with the comical twist. A guy with the coolest name EVER was arrested last Thursday in Madison, Wisconsin on a number of criminal charges!

According to published reports, 30-year-old Beezow Doo-Doo Zopittybob-Bop-Bop‘s charges include carrying a concealed weapon, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana and a violation probation.

Court records state that Zopittybob-Bop-Bop was born Jeffrey Drew Wilschkue, but he legally changed his name to Beezow Doo-Doo Zoopittybop-Bop-Bop in October.

Zopittybop-Bop-Bop was arrested at a local park back in April 2011 (when he was still Jeffrey Wilschkue) after neighbors complained of “excessive drinking and drug use.”

Police say when they took him into custody, they found marijuana, drug paraphernalia, a knife and a loaded handgun, among other items, in his backpack.

On his way to jail, Zopittybop-Bop-Bop allegedly told cops that he would eventually “get even with them.”

When he’s not getting into trouble with the law, Beezow Doo-Doo Zoopittybop-Bop-Bop enjoys activities such as “eating,” “standing,” “walking,” “thinking,” and “diamond,” according to his (unconfirmed) Facebook page, which also lists that he is “single.”

You’re going to hear a lot this year about how, at some point in 2012, the world is going to end. That we will all, in some way or another, wound up gone, destroyed, burned, eaten, smashed to pulp or, if we’re really lucky, a combination of the lot.

We’ll be fine, of course, but they’re going to say it anyway. Here’s why.

The first time most people will have come across this prophecy is courtesy of 2009 movie 2012, a film in which the planet is torn asunder and only John Cusack and giant space boats survive. It’s complete rubbish, of course, but the theory underpinning the movie is a very real one, based on the fact that in December 2012 (December 21, to be exact) an entire cycle of the Mayan calendar, one which has run for around 5000 years, comes to an end.

The calendar, actually known as the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar (it wasn’t just the Mayans using it), doesn’t work like ours. So there’s no January 2011, then January 2012, and so on and so on. It ran in enormous cycles, called b’ak’tuns, and this December we reach the end of the thirteenth b’ak’tun recorded on the calendar, which also coincides with the end of a larger “world age”, which can last for around 5000 years.

While for most Mesoamericans this simply meant the end of an age, and maybe even cause for celebration (similar to the “millennium madness” in 2000), others with a more pessimistic view on life have constructed something else out of the phenomenon. In recent years various spiritualists, crackpot astrologists and other well-wishers of apocalypse have latched onto the date and foreseen that it means the end of the world, supported by little but fantastical theories of planetary alignments and phantom planets.

Basing their predictions on doomsday writings from Columbus and poorly-translated and agenda-riddled works from 19th century European scholars, there are now numerous possible theories as to how and why the world will end in 2012, when this Mayan calendar rolls over and kills us all.

The most popular of these include the appearance and subsequent collision with Earth of a planet called Nibiru, the spontaneous reversal of Earth’s magnetic field (which was expanded upon in the movie 2012) and our alignment with a black hole in the centre of our galaxy somehow managing to destroy us all.

Those theories are, in order, implausible, optimistic (such reversals can take thousands of years to take place) and out of date (we passed that alignment over a decade ago). Mayan scholars also want no part of them, pointing out that in actual Mayan history and records – not those cooked up by Westerners centuries after the fact – there’s no mention of an apocalypse coinciding with the end of the calendar cycle whatsoever.

Still, believers (and the media) aren’t going to let science get in the way of a good story, so you can bet as December rolls around you’ll see more than a few nutjobs on your local TV news buying tinned food and batteries.

Unless you’re mad or extremely gullible, leave them be. What you may find more interesting than doomsday preparations, though, are the number of popular works of media that join the Mayans in predicting the end of the world, in one way or another, during 2012.

TV show The X Files , for example, is faithful to the Mayan calendar theories, in that one of the key storylines running throughout the series, that of government conspiracies and aliens, comes to a head in December 2012 with the alien colonization of Earth.

Also closely aligned with the Mesoamerican calendar are two gaming properties. Shadowrun, the popular role-playing game franchise, (which has in turn been adapted several times into a video game), is based on the end of the Mayan age and beginning of another – on December 21, 2012 – marking the return to Earth of magic forces, an event that makes Shadowrun one of the most compelling and unique properties going around.

Blockbuster video game series Assassin’s Creed does something similar. All four major games in the series have been set in some way or another in 2012, with the player controlling an Assassin in the historic order’s fight against the Knights Templar. It’s suggested that the series’ story ends on December 21, 2012, with gamers having to race to stop the end of the world.

So if you’re up into the wee hours on December 20 this year and want something more enjoyable (and poignant!) to do than watch crazies prepare for the end of the world, there are plenty of good movies, TV shows and games around to keep you entertained.

A waitress at a Seattle restaurant recently posted the “tip” she received from a patron — instead of actually tipping her, he told her to lose weight.

According to her Facebook page, Victoria Liss waited on one Andrew Meyer at Bimbo’s Cantina on Friday night. Instead of tipping her at the end of his meal, he wrote on the check, “P.S. You could stand to loose [sic] a few pounds.” Helpful! I’m sure Meyer’s weight-loss advice will be far more useful to Liss than any amount of money.

Mrs. Bourne, 60, sent her future daughter-in-law Heidi Withers a nasty e-mail after stepson Freddie introduced Heidi to the family. In the message, Bourne, a Florist from London, slams Withers for her “Lack of grace,” branding her as an “ideal candidate for the Ladette to Lady television series.”

Freddie’s angry stepmother even goes in on Heidi’s parents, saying, “I understand your parents are unable to contribute very much towards the cost of your wedding. (There is nothing wrong with that except that convention is such that one might presume they would have saved over the years for their daughters’ marriages),” apparently in response to Heidi wanting a “celebrity-style” wedding without her family having the money to afford it themselves.

“I pity Freddie,” Heidi’s future mother-in-law ended the e-mail.

We just came across this video and we HAD to post it. We’ve been laughing for the past 10 minutes as we listen to it over and over. A radio station calls some woman with serious road rage (you’ll see what we’re talking about when you peep the video) as a prank and tells her that her son is “heterosexual.” She thinks it means “homosexual” and of course, hilarity ensues. She then goes on to blame MTV and pop group NSYNC for her son’s “heterosexuality,” not knowing that the word means that he’s straight LMAO!!

Since Beyonce decided to call herself “Sasha Fierce,” the internet has been buzzing and downright clowning the singer for doing such a thing. But why can’t she? Everybody else is doing it! Take Lil’ Wayne for example. How many names does he have? You got Dwayne, Wayne, Lil Wayne, Weezy, Wizzle, Wizzard, and however else you can mix-up the phonetics of his name. SOME INMATES AT LA COUNTY JAIL ARE ANGRY OVER POSSIBLE ARRIVAL OF PARIS HILTON

Many women at the Los Angeles County jail where Paris Hilton is expected to arrive any day are already angry at the socialite, a former inmate said. Susannah Johnson, who was released Saturday after a one-day stay at the jail, said inmates were angry at Hilton, believing officials were making room for the starlet at the expense of other inmates already coping with crowded conditions in the 2,200-bed jail. ”The only advice I could give her when she comes is to shut her mouth and do the time,” said Johnson, 35, of Claremont. Hilton has been ordered to turn herself in by Tuesday to begin her sentence for violating probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case. Some 15 photographers, reporters and television crews staked out positions at three entrances to the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood. Authorities had also cordoned off a grassy area outside the jail for members of the media.

”Today, Paris is the story,” said Robert Penfold, a TV reporter with Australia’s Nine Network. As of Saturday night, however, the hotel heiress had yet to appear. By then, most of the media had packed up their folding chairs and tripods, though a handful of remaining reporters bundled up in the cooling temperatures. Adrian Sanchez, a photographer with Agencia Efe, a Spanish language wire service, said he was ”bored, hungry and cold.” The 13-year-old jail, five miles south of downtown Los Angeles, has been an all-female facility since March 2006. Once she arrives, the ”Simple Life” star will be housed in the jail’s ”special needs” unit. Like other inmates in the special-needs area, Hilton will take her meals in her cell and will be allowed outside the 12-foot-by-8-foot space for at least an hour each day to shower, watch TV in the day room, participate in outdoor recreation or talk on the telephone. Inmates are not allowed to bring cell phones into the jail. Besides a decidedly unglamorous orange jumpsuit, inmates are issued a standard-issue kit that includes: a toothbrush, tube of toothpaste, soap, a comb, deodorant, shampoo and shaving implements, along with a jail-issued pencil, stationery, envelopes and stamps.

Officers arrested Hilton in Hollywood on Sept. 7. In January, she pleaded no contest to the reckless-driving charge and was sentenced to 36 months’ probation, alcohol education and $1,500 in fines. She was pulled over by the California Highway Patrol on Jan. 15. Officers informed Hilton she was driving on a suspended license and she signed a document acknowledging she was not to drive. She was pulled over again by sheriff’s deputies Feb. 27 and was charged with violating her probation.

Sheriff Lee Baca said Friday that Paris Hilton will not be allowed to give television interviews while serving her jail sentence and that aggressive steps were being taken to prevent cameras from being smuggled into the facility. Hilton was ordered to begin her sentence by Tuesday at a county jail in Lynwood, about five miles south of Los Angeles. Baca told the Los Angeles Times that deputies and jail employees have been told to treat the 26-year-old heiress like any other inmate. ”Paying a debt to society should not be an element of her celebrity,” Baca said. ”Her occupation is publicity, but no one should profit in jail.” Hilton could report to jail before Tuesday, but as of Friday afternoon had not done so, said sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore. She may report at any time of day, said Whitmore. Hollywood photo agencies expect a photo of Hilton in jail would be worth big money.

”The reality is why don’t they just let her walk down the concrete carpet,” said Frank Griffin, co-owner of the Bauer-Griffin paparazzi agency, told the paper. ”This is going to be turned into an event like the Oscars.” Hilton was sentenced last month to 45 days for violating the terms of her probation in an alcohol-related reckless-driving case after repeatedly driving her car while her license was suspended. Hilton will ”experience her incarceration as all other women will experience it,” said Baca. ”She won’t get better food, she won’t get different lockup time or a different environment.”
