R&B singer/songwriter Alicia Keys and her boyfriend, rapper/producer Swizz Beatz, walked the red carpet as a couple (for the first time) at Alicia’s Gotham Magazine annual gala presented by Bing at Capitale last night (Mon. Mar 15) in New York City. Swizzy recently announced that his divorce from his estranged wife Mashonda (yeah, dude’s still “technically” married), so now he and Alicia are free to show off their relationship at industry events, instead of hiding from cameras and not being pictured together.

Rapper Jay-Z put on his hard hat as he participated in the ground-breaking ceremony of the controversial Barclays Center Atlantic Yards project last Thursday (May 11) in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. Jay’s wife Beyonce was in attendance to “complement the deal,” as she sings in her “Upgrade U” song.
The $4.9 million project, which will feature a basketball arena at the Atlantic Yards site, recently received the green light following years of delays and challenges in court. Community activists caused a stir when the project was formally announced a few years ago. Apparently, they were angry over the money the project is costing and the potential damage the increased traffic and pollution will have on the area, which sits next to a neighborhood.

In an effort to promote the importance of literacy, young R&B singer Chris Brown paid a visit to the Sisulu-Walker Charter School of Harlem in New York City last Thursday (Mar 11), and read a book called “Superhero School” to a group of third graders at the school. The entertainer, who took a few pictures and signed some autographs following the reading, tweeted about the experience on his newly-launched Twitter account.
“Just left a school in Harlem reading to 3rd graders a book called superhero school. The school was a great experience… the kids were great, and i had a great time promoting the importance of literacy”
Chris later tweeted that he will be showing his appreciation to the U.S. troops by visiting military base Fort Hood sometime this week.

The Black Eyed Peas took over Times Square in New York City Wednesday night (Mar 10) and performed a surprise concert in an effort to promote the launch of Samsung’s new 3D TV’s, which are available this week.
Though the concert wasn’t publicized, due to an NYC regulation that states that events in Times Square can’t be formally announced until 30 minutes prior to they’re scheduled to start, but Twitter and other forms of social media allowed the Peas to attract a crowd of around 10,000 people.

Craig’s been on the scene since 2000 when he released Born to Do It, which has sold over 8 million copies worldwide, making it one of the biggest albums by a UK R&B artist ever. She’s a singer, actress, fashion designer/business woman and now she owns a school in Brooklyn, New York! On Friday (Mar 5), Beyonce and her mom Tina Knowles spoke at Phoenix House, a nonprofit recovery center for drug and alcohol addiction, to unveil the Beyonce Cosmetology Center.
The press release states that the program is “a seven-month cosmetology training course for adult men and women.” All of the products to be used at the center have been donated by L’Oreal, and Beyonce and Tina have made a commitment to donate $100,000 every year.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg was also in attendance and spoke before Beyonce took to the podium.
While Phoenix House provides varied vocational training, “I felt like they needed something that was geared towards women — something that would teach them skills that would give them hope even after the Phoenix House,” Beyoncé explained about why she chose to fund a beauty school. Her mother also owned and operated a salon in Knowles’ hometown of Houston.
“I saw that a salon was a place for women to socialize, share stories, cry, laugh and get advice,” she continued about her experiences growing up around a beauty parlor. She was close to tears as she added, “Most importantly, I saw the joy it brought my mother, knowing she was a part of their transformation.”

In related news, her personal trainer Cindy Percival filed a lawsuit against her in L.A. County Superior Court last week, claiming she owes her over $26,000 from invoices dating back to 2009.
In the lawsuit, Cindy claims she was hired to perform “exclusive personal training services” for Rihanna for $1,500 per day — but never got a check for a couple of weeks of work between September and October. Cindy is also asking for $2,644.14 in travel expenses — because she claims she had to travel all over Europe to meet up with Rihanna … to make her bend, stretch, pump and sweat in person … which really should be payment enough. No comment from Rihanna’s people.

Battling a hoarse voice, rapper Jay-Z, along with his supporting act Trey Songz, kicked off the North American leg of his Blueprint 3 tour at the Bank Atlantic Center Saturday night (Feb 20) in Miami, FL. Another big name on the bill was Young Jeezy (not pictured), who took to the stage in the middle of Jay-Z’s set for a nearly half-hour set of his own.
Backed by a 10-piece band, including live horns to accentuate tracks like “Roc Boys,” Jay sported an all-black outfit, topped with a black baseball cap, and began the show with his hit “Run This Town.” As images of the New York City skyline flashed behind the stage on an expansive screen, the rapper tore through his recent (and first) #1 hit, “Empire State of Mind,” with singer Bridget Kelley filling in for Alicia Keys’ vibrant alto.
Unfortunately, a bit further into his set, Jay-Z lost his voice and was obviously straining to spit his lyrics. Then the horn section was muted during the poignant tracks like “D.O.A” and “Show Me What You Got.” Jeezy took his special-guest spot in the middle of Jay’s set and performed for almost 30 minutes, giving Jay-Z a chance to rest his voice. The Brooklyn native re-emerged for the pair’s Obama-honoring collabo “My President.”
Ending the show with a rendition of “Encore,” Jay-Z told the audience, “I’m not jaded, I appreciate every one of you being here.” Jay-Z’s tour continues through the end of next month, and wraps with a performance at the Coachella festival in April. He’ll also perform at the Bonnaroo festival in Tennessee in June.

International pop superstar Lady Gaga opened the UK leg of her “Monster Ball” tour to a sold out crowd in Manchester, England at the Manchester Evening News Arena last Thursday night (Feb 18). According to an in-depth review from the BBC, the “hugely ambitious” show included 15 costume changes a 40-foot sea monster … and a few technical glitches.
It was a hugely ambitious, terrifyingly loud show, spread over four acts and held together by a flimsy “narrative” about Gaga and her dancer friends trying to get to a party. Impressively, the entire spectacle was put together in just four weeks.
The singer told fans at the MEN arena: “We were doing another show in the United States… but I got very bored, so I threw it away.” In fact, the production was so last-minute that the star was still on stage adding the finishing touches just half an hour before the doors opened. Inevitably, then, the first night didn’t run entirely smoothly.
Lighting cues were missed, the sound mix wasn’t properly balanced and the show over-ran by 30 minutes, leaving some of the audience stranded in a cold and snowy Manchester. But nearly all 23,000 of them stayed on to the bitter end – because, make no mistake, this was a sight to behold.
Wow… opening your first headlining tour told a sold out crowd in a massive arena that holds over 20,000 people? It’s hard to believe that this “Lady Gaga” person has only been on the scene for a year and a half.

Singer Beyonce wrapped up the South American leg of her “I Am… Tour” Thursday night (Feb 18) at the Queen’s Park Savannah in Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago.
This particular date also marked the end of the entire tour and was met with criticism from area promoters and entertainers because they felt like Beyonce’s show would overshadow carnival events, which ended last Tuesday (Feb 16). However, Carnival went along as planned and obviously Bey’s show went on as well.

Socialite turned reality TV star Kim Kardashian brought along her mom Kris Jenner to the launch event for “The Kim Kardashian Vanilla Cupcake” Friday afternoon (Feb 19) at Famous Cupcakes in Beverly Hills, CA. The ladies posed for a few pictures on the red carpet before making their way into the building for the launch event for Kim’s new dessert treat.
The very next day while out driving with her friend and reality co-star Jonathan Cheban (from her new show “SPINdustry” of which she is executive producer) in West Hollywood, Kim was pulled over by a police officer and issued a ticket for driving without a license plate. Producers of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” caught wind of a big campaign from Justin Bieber’s fans to get the young pop star on the popular sketch comedy show, and they announced that the Biebz will perform as SNL’s musical guest on April 10th. Justin confirmed the news via his Twitter Saturday (Feb 20), shortly after Rap-Up.com broke the story.
The teen sensation will appear as the musical guest on the April 10 episode of “Saturday Night Live,” Rap-Up.com can exclusively reveal. The late-night booking comes on the heels of other high-profile appearances including the “We Are the World” remake, presenting at the Grammys, and performing for President Obama. The hard work of Bieber’s devoted fans has paid off. Petitions circulated online to get him on the show and there was even a Twitter account @BieberOnSNL dedicated to the mission.

Super model Naomi Campbell kicked off London Fashion Week yesterday (Feb 18) with her second “Fashion for Relief Haiti” runway exhibit. Click here for pictures from her first Fashion for Relief show, held last Friday (Feb 12) in New York City for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week 2010.
Campbell, with the help of her friends Kate Moss, Geri Halliwell, Alexandra Burke, Beverley Knight and even Mr. Hudson, paid tribute to Alexander McQueen all the while raising funds for Haiti relief.
The big fashion show was followed by an auction on the pieces that were presented on the runway. According to the the Daily Mail, Kate Moss broke down in tears as the dress she modeled was sold for £100,000 (about $154k USD).
Campbell said it was a cause dear to her heart, adding: “I am deeply saddened by the recent tragedy in Haiti. So many have been killed and severely affected by the earthquake – women and children in particular are most vulnerable in disasters. Fashion is universal, personal and touches everyone.”

Wearing a black, winged Stella McCartney dress, former X Factor winner Leona Lewis walked the red carpet at a party hosted by the Spanish edition of Harper’s Bazaar magazine at the Casino de Madrid Wednesday night (Feb 17) in Madrid, Spain.
Leona was nominated in the “Best Female Solo Artist” category for the 2010 Brit Awards, held just the night before in London, but she lost the award to singer Lily Allen.
But despite missing out, the singer earlier told MailOnline on the red carpet that she wasn’t hopeful of winning anyway. She said: “I’m excited and really looking forward to seeing Jay-Z. Kim Kardashian hit up Sephora in New York City Monday (Feb 15) to spread the word about her new “Kim Kardashian” fragrance.
She and her boyfriend, NFL champ Reggie Bush, spent Valentine’s Day (Sun. Feb 14) together in Las Vegas at Lavo, where Kim was hosting their official “love day bash.”
Kardashian hosted club Lavo’s official love day bash, where she and boyfriend Bush enjoyed some Italian food (and an oversized Oreo for dessert!) before heading upstairs to party.

Oscar nominated actress Gabourey Sidibe walked the red carpet of the 41st Annual NAACP Image Awards Nominee Luncheon at the Beverly Hills Hotel Saturday afternoon (Feb 13) in California.
