Common covers the December 2008 issue of YRB Magazine. In this issue Common talks about what made him start acting, his tour with N.E.R.D, his legacy in hip-hop, and his new album: Universal Mind Control.

YRB: Earlier this year, you mentioned the up-tempo tone of Universal Mind Control as a response to going to clubs and not hearing your own music. Was that a conscious plan going into recording?

Common: I think it evolved naturally. My experiences always come through in my music. I ain’t get up to Pharrell and say, “Make dance music.” Those words never came out of neither one of us. But in my mind, I knew I wanted to have some music that people could dance to. When I did Electric Circus [in 2002], I wanted to do some music that was “out there.” That was the only way I could describe it to the producers. That’s what my experiences were and what I was listening to at the time. This time, I was inspired to just make fun music. A lot of people see what’s going on in the world and awareness is at a high level. The information is out there. At this point in my career, it’s not necessary to tell people what’s going on or how to resolve the situation. More than anything, I wanted to give people something they could enjoy. A lot of times, I still was having fun in my life but I felt I needed to make some music that could inspire some people in other ways.

“I spent hours getting the nuances of the person, making him real. Something angelic happens and you actually become that person. For Nathaniel, I pushed things a bit. I lost about 20 pounds and I put a gap in my teeth. I had one (of my teeth) chipped out with a chisel. My teeth are just so big and white – a homeless person would never have them. I wanted to break up my big, shining piano keys to five them a little character. Some might think I f*cked up my grill for nothing, but I just wanted to come up with some s— to make the part unique.”

Jim Jones Covers the December/January issue of Complex Magazine. In the issue Jim Jones talks His acting career, New York Rap, Cam’ron, 50 Cent and of course Rocafella. Peep some of the interview below.

You hear it all the time, but NY rap is still not back to being at the forefront of rap. Who else would you enlist to bring the game back?

Jim Jones: Without my own personal hatred—I got to put all my feelings aside—to bring NY back properly, I would definitely put the Lox as a whole. Definitely 50. I f*ck with 50, and beyond everything we got a mutual understanding. I think we think alike in some ill twisted way. But, it’s still aggressive competition above all, because we all trying to eat out the same pot.

So even with personal hatred aside, Nas and Jay are still not on the roster?

Jim Jones: To bring New York back? Sh*t, why they ain’t bring it back already? It would’ve been back. I didn’t even think about them. The integrity of their music right now is not where we come from any more. Nas is still stuck in Africa, and Jay is talking about way too much money and Merrill Lynch talk and shi*t like that.

You’ve said that there’s no more Rocafella, but Kanye has had great success, and he still claims the Roc.

Jim Jones: I don’t know if he’s actually with Jay-Z from the looks of things. From what I’ve been seeing from since we were signed until now, I think Kanye actually hates Jay-Z. [Dame Dash interrupts:] No, he actually does. He hated Jay-Z ever since he wouldn’t give him a f*cking Rocawear chain in Chicago! I’m telling you.

Jim Jones: I don’t know if the song “Big Brother” was correct, but he might’ve hated him since he didn’t give him those tickets to Madison Square Garden.

Damon Dash: This was before that. He was already in full hate by that time. [Laughs.] This nigga [Kanye] was like, “Wow, he ain’t going to give me the chain.” I had to take off my chain and give it to him, and I was heated. I had the real canary diamonds. That sh*t cost $40,000! I told Kanye, “Yo, you got to give that back when we get off this stage!”

Jim, do you have any theories?

Jim Jones: Jay never sells as much as Kanye. Jay-Z wishes he could sell as many records as Kanye. So he’s only beating him with terrible swag. Like over there, their swag is terrible. They having a terrible swag contest. It’s really bad over there.

You warned Kanye to keep your name out of his mouth after he said some things about you and Juelz closing Summer Jam. Would you ever fully go at him?

Jim Jones: Kanye?! I like making jokes about him, but Kanye is somebody you can just punch his chest old-school style, cave his chest in and shit like that. Like don’t ever, ever, ever talk about me again in your life! It’s just a joke to me. I’m just having fun. I heard him ranting and raving about my name and shit. How would I look having an issue with Kanye? I’d love to work with him. I need a beat from him. I think that’s why I’m most mad. Matter fact, I’ma f*ck you up if you don’t give me a beat! [Laughs.]

50 cent is one celebrity who is not feeling Kanye West‘s new album, 808′s & Heartbreak. MTV caught up with the rapper and asked what he thought about Kanye’s upcoming album. This is what 50 had to say:

“I heard, like, seven songs,” 50 said of the album, which features Kanye singing more than on his past albums. “There’s a place for it. I think people will enjoy it if you’re actually in love or going through something. I mean if your going through something you can actually vibe with it. I think Kanye’s going through an interesting point in his career.

“I don’t think the public will forgive [Kanye] for it, but it’s interesting. I think it’s T-Pain’s record, but I’d rather buy it from T-Pain.”

I think 50 should just be quiet and let the album sales speak for itself. If Kanye’s fans are not feeling the voice over then I’m almost 100% positive he will know the day his record drops. What do ya’ll think?

Comedian Wanda Sykes pulled a Clay Aiken and revealed something about herself that she thought would shock the world … she’s gay! This is what Ms. Sykes had to say about her sexual orientation.

“You know, I don’t really talk about my sexual orientation. I didn’t feel like I had to. I was just living my life, not necessarily in the closet, but I was living my life,” Sykes told a crowd at a gay rights rally in Las Vegas on Saturday.

“Everybody that knows me personally they know I’m gay. But that’s the way people should be able to live their lives,” she said.

Sykes, who is known for her feisty and blunt style, said the passage of California’s Proposition 8 made her feel like she was “attacked.”

“Now, I gotta get in their face,” she said. “I’m proud to be a woman. I’m proud to be a black woman, and I’m proud to be gay.”

Even though this doesn’t come as a surprise to me, I must applaud Wanda for feeling comfortable enough to share this with the world and for standing up for what she believes in. I’m not gonna say any names but, hopefully some other Hollywood stars … Queen Latifah …. will follow Wanda’s lead.

Barack Obama‘s grandmother, Madelyn Payne Dunha, passed away last night. The news comes just one day before the 2008 elections in which her grandson is favored to win. Barack made a joint statement with his sister today regarding the death of his grandmother while campaigning in Charlotte, N.C.

“It is with great sadness that we announce that our grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has died peacefully after a battle with cancer. She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength and humility. She was the person who encouraged and allowed us to take chances. She was proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and left this world with the knowledge that her impact on all of us was meaningful and enduring. Our debt to her is beyond measure.

“Our family wants to thank all of those who sent flowers, cards, well-wishes and prayers during this difficult time. It brought our grandmother and us great comfort. Our grandmother was a private woman, and we will respect her wish for a small private ceremony to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation to any worthy organization in search of a cure for cancer.”

We here at Gossip On This ask that you keep his family in your thoughts and prayers. It is so sad that his grandmother will not be able to see her grandson make history.

ATLANTA // WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 29TH 2008 » T.I. was spotted voting yesterday in Atlanta. If you are looking at this picture like I was and wondering how was T.I. able to vote after committing a felony, here is a little info for you courtesy of MTV.

How was T.I. able to vote? Well, the Georgia Secretary of State’s office, in consultation with their own lawyers “reviewed the law and found that Mr. Harris is eligible to in Georgia because the state constitution says that to be able to vote, you have to have served your entire sentence, which includes all probation and fines and any other stipulations,” said Matt Carrothers, the Secretary of State’s director of media relations.

Because T.I. is not slated to go to prison until next year on felony gun charges and is not currently incarcerated — though he is under house arrest — and is not on probation, all he had to do was contact the county he votes in and get re-registered in order to cast a ballot.

DIDI LIMA ON WHY SHE THINKS HISPANICS SHOULD NOT VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA »

“We don’t want (Hispanics) to become the new African-American community,” Lima the Hispanic community liaison for Republican John McCain’s presidential campaign told The Associated Press. “And that’s what the Democratic Party is going to do to them, create more programs and give them handouts, food stamps and checks for this and checks for that. We don’t want that.”

“I’m very much afraid that the Democratic Party is going to do the same thing that they did with the African-American culture and make them all dependent on the government and we don’t want that,” she said.

JOHN MCCAIN AND HIS ADVISER LET AMERICANS KNOW HE DOESN’T “PHONE IT IN” »

“I’ve never been afraid of stepping in to solve problems for the American people, and I’m not going to stop now,” McCain told a rally in Columbus, Ohio. “Sen. Obama took a very different approach to the crisis our country faced. At first he didn’t want to get involved. Then he was monitoring the situation.”

McCain, grinning, flashed a sarcastic thumbs up.

“That’s not leadership. That’s watching from the sidelines,” he added to cheers and applause.

Doug Holtz-Eakin, McCain’s senior policy adviser, told reporters on a conference call that Obama was “phoning it in” instead of working hard on a rescue. “Where was Barack Obama for today?” Holtz-Eakin said. “He’s phoning it in — phoning it in — one more time.”

McCain “dedicated the past week” to addressing the problem but made “a conscious decision not to attract attention to John McCain.”

“He’s made dozens of calls” Holtz-Eakin said.

SARAH PALIN ON AGREEING BUT NOT AGREEING THEN AGREEING AGAIN WITH BARACK OBAMA »

The interview began with a question about an incident on Saturday in Philadelphia, in which a voter in a restaurant asked Ms. Palin about cross-border attacks from Afghanistan into Pakistan.

She had said she approved of such attacks, to “stop the terrorists from coming any further in,” which is the position of Senator Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee.

Asked if she and Mr. McCain were “on the same page” on this subject, Ms. Palin said:

“We had a great discussion with President Zardari as we talked about what it is that America can and should be doing together to make sure that the terrorists do not cross borders and do not ultimately put themselves in a position of attacking America again or her allies. And we will do what we have to do to secure the United States of America and her allies.”

Ms. Couric noted that Mr. McCain had said earlier that such attacks were not something that should be discussed out loud, and asked him again: “Is that something you shouldn’t say out loud, Senator McCain?”

Mr. McCain said: “Of course not. But, look, I understand this day and age ‘gotcha’ journalism. Is that a pizza place? In a conversation with someone who you didn’t hear — the question very well, you don’t know the context of the conversation. Grab a phrase. Governor Palin and agree that you don’t announce that you’re going to attack another country.”

Ms. Couric asked Ms. Palin if she was sorry she had made the statement, but Mr. McCain jumped in.

“Wait a minute,” he said. “Before you say, ‘is she sorry she said it,’ this was a ‘gotcha’ sound bite that, look …”

Ms. Couric said it was not a “gotcha” moment and that the question was tossed out by a voter, not a journalist.

“No,” Mr. McCain said. “She was in a conversation with a group of people and talking back and forth. And, I’ll let Governor Palin speak for herself.”

Ms. Palin said that Mr. McCain was “absolutely right on.”

She added: “In the context, this was a voter, a constituent, hollering out a question from across an area asking, ‘What are you gonna do about Pakistan?

You better have an answer to Pakistan.’ I said we’re gonna do what we have to do to protect the United States of America.”

Ms. Couric said: “But you were pretty specific about what you wanted to do, cross-border.”

Ms. Palin said: “Well, as Senator McCain is suggesting here, also, never would our administration get out there and show our cards to terrorists, in this case, to enemies and let them know what the game plan was, not when that could ultimately adversely affect a plan to keep America secure.”

Ms. Couric asked her what she had learned from the experience.

“That this is all about ‘gotcha’ journalism,” she said, smiling. “A lot of it is,” she said, quickly adding, “But that’s O.K., too.”

The film based around the life and death of Brooklyn rapper Biggie Smalls/Notorious B.I.G. The film features Angela Bassett as Voletta Wallace, Derek Luke as Diddy, Anthony Mackie as Tupac, Sen Ringgold as Suge Knight, Antonique as Faithe Evans, Naturi Naughton as Lil’ Kim, and stars Jamal Woolard as Biggie Smalls. I’m curious to see how Biggie’s death was filmed, everyone knows the case is still a unsolved homicide. So it looks like Kanye West, Solange, and Pharrell aren’t the only big time celebs making their presence known in the blog world. Weezy has completed his first post in a blog series for ESPN: The Magazine. Check out some of his post below and let me know what you think.

Hello, everybody.

This is the first entry in the blog I’m doing for ESPN The Magazine. I don’t watch nothing but sports—no movies, no news, no television shows—so I thought this would be fun.

Because I watch so much sports, I like to think I know what’s gonna happen. But with the NFL this year, some things have shocked me, some things have been just terrible. Like the Bengals. Damn. I kind of had a feeling things were gonna be bad, but I didn’t want them to be this bad. And oh my God the Chargers.

They won on Monday, but it still wasn’t the Chargers. Then again, I think LaDainian is going to figure out how to work his way back through this injury. LaDainian is tough. I think that last game will be a big motivation boost for him. I’ve talked to some people who’ve had similar injuries with the toe, and they tell me that it’s the mental thing you have to get over first. The pain never goes away, so you gotta accept that and just fight your way through it. I think once he gets used to it you’re gonna see he’s the same LaDainian. I’m not worried about him. He’s gonna be fine. [CONTINUE]

The 60th Primetime Emmy Awards went down last night and the stars like Trace Morgan, Taraji P. Henson, Omar Epps, Diddy, Wayne Brady, Vanessa Williams, Laurence Fishburne and many more were in attendance. Looks like it was a fun show! Check out some more pics after the jump!

Creator of the popular clothing line Famous Stars and Straps Travis Barker, and Nicole Richie‘s ex fiancé DJ AM are in critical condition today after their plane skid off of a runway in Columbia, South Carolina. The crash, which killed all 4 of the other people aboard, happened soon after the jet started to takeoff last night. According to air traffic controllers, sparks were seen shooting from the plane before it veered and crashed in a nearby road.

An eye witness told NBC news affiliate WIS that he saw a fireball crossing the road near the airport and then realized it was a plane. He saw jet fuel shoot out across the roadway and then saw two men, who were both on fire, patting each other down to extinguish the flames.

Beth Frits, a spokesperson for the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Georgia, confirmed that AM (born Adam Goldstein) and Barker were transported to a hospital in Columbia, following the crash. They were transferred — AM by helicopter and Barker by ambulance — to the Still Center soon after. She told CNN that both men had “extensive burns.”

Lexington County Deputy Coroner Brian Setree confirmed for MTV News on Saturday morning that three men and a woman were killed in the crash. Just after 10 a.m. Saturday, Setree identified two of the crash victims: the plane’s pilot, Sarah Lemmon, 31, of Anaheim, California, and her co-pilot, James Bland, who was 52 and lived in Carlsbad, California. At 10:40, Setree confirmed that Barker’s assistant, Chris “Little Chris” Baker, also died in the crash. He was 29, and lived in Studio City, California. TMZ.com is reporting that Baker, who appeared on MTV’s reality show “Meet the Barkers,” was newly married, and that his wife recently gave birth. At 11:30 a.m., Setree released the name of the fourth person who died: Charles Still, 25, of Los Angeles. He reportedly worked in a security capacity.

I have yet to see the interview but for those of you who did, what did you think? Does Funk Master Flex have a point or should he mind his own business?

There was an era when R&B wasn’t hot. … The whole hip-hop/R&B era just kinda threw me for a loop. Around early 2000 when every song kinda sounded like (one note repeated). Like for real, one note the whole song? That never made sense to me. ‘Cause like, if you’re gonna rap — rap. If you’re gonna sing — sing. Don’t try to do this combination hybrid of the two of them that sounds like (garbage). I didn’t dig it. I just never got into it

…Everybody was very much hip-hop/R&B. Everybody was very much Ciara- and Sean Garretted-out. No disrespect to Sean Garrett (writer of Ciara’s debut single “Goodies”), but I think he kind of fathered that era.
