Believe it or not, Taylor Swift‘s eye-popping music video for her new single “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” was shot in just one take, without ANY edits.

The quirky video, directed by Declan Whitbloom, debuted on MTV and CMT Thursday. It shows the country-pop singer in several scenes that play out like a larger than life pop-up book, complete with handmade scenery, bright colors, sweeping camera turns and some woodland creatures.

Swift says she and her band rehearsed the video several times on a soundstage in Los Angeles before they actually attempted to shoot it without stopping.

When it came time to actually record the clip, it took 17 different tries to get it right. Behind the scenes, Swift tells MTV News she was “ripping clothes off, putting clothes on” for the video’s many wardrobe changes.

By the 18th take, they had their video. “This was a one-camera, one-shot, no-editing-involved video,” Swift told CMT.com. “So literally the minute we wrapped the final take, we watched it back — and we knew what the video looked like! It was surreal.”

“We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” is the lead single from her next album “Red” — available October 22nd. As of this week, it is currently the number one song on iTunes.
