The newly released 3D version of Disney‘s wildly popular animated movie “The Lion King” claimed the weekend box office throne this weekend … with domestic ticket sales totaling up to $29.3 million, shocking critics and even people at Disney, who estimated that the movie wouldn’t do more than around $10 million or so.

Since its release in 1994, the original Lion King — considered to be one of the most successful animated films of all time — has earned an impressive $358 million dollars in the U.S. alone, and $784 million in theaters worldwide.

A 3D Blu-ray disc for “The Lion King” is set for release next month.
