David Archuleta Dropped from Jive Records

February 21, 2011 by The Master Chief

David Archuleta has been dropped from his record label.

The “American Idol” Season 7 runner-up was released from Jive Records after 3 years, according to a short statement released by the label that reads “David was released from our roster.”

Archuleta was only 16 years old when he lost “Idol” to David Cook, but still won over lots of fans and went on to release his first debut album in 2008. His self-titled debut ended up moving nearly a million units and has since been certified platinum.

The 20-year-old’s latest album, The Other Side of Down (released in 2010) failed to gain traction at radio or on the charts, and has thusfar sold only about 63,000 copies.

I love David Archuleta’s voice and music. I hope he keeps making music and I will keep buying it.

David will be just fine. He’s an amazing talent with a large fanbase. Unfortunately, alot of his fanbase is teenagers who don’t believe they have to pay for music. There have been over 300K illegal downloads of his last CD~ 5 times more than what was sold. Also, JIVE did NOTHING to promote his CD or push his singles to radio. Very, very few people knew “The Other Side of Down” existed until now. Which is sad, because it’s a TERRIFIC album! ..JIVE has alot of problems right now, too. Alot of executive shakeups when TOSOD was released, including the CEO of JIVE and David’s A&R rep. Plus, they’ve never known how to market him..so they just didnt’. I’m glad he’s away from JIVE. Now he can where he’s appreciated and he can soar. Go David!

All the headlines are reading “DROPPED” .. but the actual statement states “RELEASED” .. contract has been fulfilled.. and perhaps David and Jive parted ways amicably.. David isn’t really a good FIT for JIVE.. he doesn’t have that shock value like Britney or Chris Brown.. I think it was a good launching pad.. but they spend so much time doing damage control for the rest of their roster.. they really don’t have the time to promote someone so “normal”.

No other comments have been made.. but I think David and Jive decided not to renew his contract.. I think we’ll hear something soon. He’s never been about how many spins his songs do or don’t get.. but that’s where him and a big time record label will butt heads.. they need to generate income.. David.. just wants to sing 8)

Archuleta just posted a video blog via Twitter. Looks like it was a parting of ways with Jive.

Love David Archuleta’s album “The Other Side of Down”! So many amazing songs! He was right to leave Jive, he worked so hard to create such great music and then they don’t spend any $$$ promoting it? “My Kind of Perfect” is my fave on the album… on repeat! :)

The Other Side of Down is a fantastic album! I really like the bonus song from the Japanese CD, “Nothin’ Else Better To Do”. I also like “Look Around”. Hard to pick a favorite. “My Kind of Perfect” is really good too!
David’s music makes me smile…inside, and out!
