Angelina Jolie to Play Cleopatra in Upcoming Film

Actress Angelina Jolie has a new movie role! The “Tomb Raider” star will be taking on the role of Cleopatra in an upcoming film about the Egyptian Queen’s life produced by Scott Rudin. According to Rudin:

“The project is being developed for and with Angelina Jolie.”

The film is based upon the novel Queen of The Nile,  Cleopatra: A Life written by author Stacy Schiff, who finds Jolie as the perfect fit for the role.

“Physically, she’s the perfect look.”

We don’t know about “perfect,” but we’re sure she will get the job done!

    Cleopatra’s skin tone would have been closer to that of Angelina’s than Halle’s, being that she was Greek. As a descendant of the Greek pharaoh’s her physical appearance would be pretty much the same as greeks today. Also, contrary to Hollywood portrayal, she was not considered an attractive woman, but revered for intelligence in that she spoke five or six languages.

Clearly Jolie just wants a big role to play, and since when does Jolie fit the description of being volumpsious? Thank you and try again, give another budding actress a chance to shine.     @MagicKid: I did not say Jolie should play Cleopatra..I said JOLIE is way too SKINNY to PLAY HER…I think they should pick some-one else ….and I do know my History well being that I am a History teacher.Cleopatra was not pretty,,,,she was deemed attractive because of her luring voice…she had a way with words and thats how she lured top leaders of that era.i do not disagree another actress should get the role.

    @tiptop, Cleopatra was Macedonian descent and that doesn’t make her black. In all the depictions, she is fair skinned with RED HAIR. I don’t know any black woman with Natural red hair. :-D About being voluptuous like Cleopatra, I think you guys forgot we talk about a MOVIE, not a documentary. For all I care, the director can chose a man to play Cleopatra, the same as in the movie about Madame Butterfly with Jeremy Irons. This is not history, people! This is fantasy, that’s why we go to the movies instead of staying home and watching History Channel – because we like to be entertained with new ideas, new perspective.

    All that matters is if an actress can pull out a BELIEVABLE character. If Jolie thinks she can play Cleopatra, her skin, size or eye color do NOT matter, only her TALENT.

    All the digressions about Jolie’s cheating or not cheating or being too skinny or too beautiful is plain ignorant. Only talent matters.

    Right, like Hollywood can not look into any other historical moments. No. “Cleopatra” to be made once again, and even worse, Angelina Jolie is the title role? I haven’t been this upset about casting since I heard Chris Evans will be playing Captain America. If casting is going to be this shitty, I’d rather not watch the movie. This author is a complete imbecile if she thinks Jolie is fit to play the slutty, queen….oh wait, maybe that’s why Jolie fits the profile. I mean, even Elizabeth Taylor fitted the profile of a snake.     Cleo wasnt 100 percent black or white but the claims that she was purely white is revisionist history.It always amazes people in this country that not all people of color are incompetent ,and can actually have intelligent civilizations .wether she was light skinned or dark she was not a white women,she was born in Eygpt light or dark she is African.

    So it seems that Cleopatra may have had a true Egyptian (as opposed to Macedonian-Greek) grandmother. Does that make her “Black?” It is a question the organizers of the Field Museum’s exhibit wanted to tackle head-on.

    cleopatra was from a regal lineage and she was extremely intelligent and had a savvy, well-trained mind due to receiving the best education available to any human being living in that time period… and she also had a sassy and determined, driven personality. that bit about her rolling herself up into the rug is true. think about what kind of person would dare to do that! so for all of those reasons, in spite of the fact that yes, she was no great beauty, she charmed the most powerful men of her time and has gone down in history as a legend.

    i think angelina is a good choice, due more to the aura of mystique and sexuality around her rather than her acting ability. zoe is an interesting suggestion, too. halle doesn’t have the gravitas to carry it off, in my opinion. but a better choice would have been thandie newton or even taraji p. henson.

    First off Angelina is very talented and though I am a huge Jolie fan, when I think of CLEOPATRA, I invision: Monica Bellucci right off the bat. Rather or not Cleopatra was physically attractive is not the issue. The main issue is to get an actress who has a sultry, seducitve, charming, charismatic and maneating appeal and we all must admit Angelina Jolie has that.
    Are you people forgetting that her role in Alexander was probably more significant than the movie itself. She made that movie more entertaining portraying the Queen of Babylon, so we already know she can pull of the accent and the makeup/costuming.
    But none of us will ever know, no matter how much history has taught us and pictures galore on the internet reveal, how attractive/un-attractive & manipulative Cleopatra was. But what I do know from history is that she taught the class on how to get men to do whattever you conjure up in their powerful mind and Angelina without even trying can do it that if she was blind, deaf and overweight.
    Angelina is not my first choice but I can see why the writer & director are onboard with having her play the part. The same reason the director of Julia&Julia chose Meryl Streep, BECAUSE PEOPLE SHE CAN ACT, EMODY ANY CHARACTER AND SHE MAKES YOU BELIEVE IT, NOW THAT IS Y I GO TO THE MOVIES, TO BE MESMERIZED, SUPRISED AND SEE MY FAV STARS DO WHAT THEY GET PAID MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO DO, ACT!

She’s Dominican.. alot of Dominicans are mixed with Spain, black, Arabic, and more… Cleopatra was not fully black niether white. She was like a Halle Barry color. I would have wanted either Halle Barry, Zoe Zoldana, or eve Beyonce to this role. You got to remeber that Jolie is also considered as one of the most beautiful women in the world as well.     I would love to see Angelina play Cleopatra. I think she is a great actress, and one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood with talent. She has won several Golden Globes, and an Oscar. I don’t care about her personal life, or how thin she is. I also loved Liz Taylor as Cleopatra- I think this movie will be different, and Jolie will be wonderful. Looking forward to seeing it.

    Liya Kebede should have played cleopatra as shes Ethiopian and the closest thing to an ancient egyptians. What you people do not understand is the egypt now is a melting pot of arabs berbers and romans. Egypt 3 thousand years ago was a land of blacks their sister state was Ethiopia aka Kush. The Greeks thousands of years ago came from Ethiopia so 2 thousand years ago were black people have you noticed how the ancient Egyptians only mingled with like minded people greeks and ethiopians then.
