I personally thought that the show was all right. However, I believe that artists who are known for dancing like Usher, Chris Brown or Ginuwine should have been slated to do a dancing/singing tribute to Michael, which is what he was known for. Ginuwine was there, though Chris and Usher weren’t. He has mentioned MJ being an influence on him, so BET could have gotten him to do a tribute with the dancing aspect. People seem to forget that Ginuwine can move just as well as Chris and Usher, plus he can sing while dancing. I understand that it was last minute, but that is something I would have like to have seen added to the show. Like many of you have stated, there really wasn’t any dancing, which is what Michael is greatly known for, on the show. I know it takes time to learn choreography, but true MJ fans will know majority of the moves anyway. Thriller is a dance everyone knows how to do and would have been a great addition to the show.

For the record, one of Chris Brown’s dancers and close friend , BShaw, is saying that IT WAS JAY-Z that had the plug pulled on Chris’ performance. So that is was happened, as told directly from an insider.

Jay-Z told BET that if they allowed Chris to perform, he & Beyonce’ would not perform! My guess i BET felt losing one was better than tow even though neither artist were were slated for Michael’s tribute specifically.

I love T.I.’s music but BET never reacted this way when he was arrested the day of the BET awards on gun possession. Even after the fiasco, he was still nominated and allowed to perform. They weren’t worried about backlash then. So, why now? I’ll tell you: It is BET’s way of showing favoritism toward the artists they like – not an individual’s talent that presides over BET’s own selfish reasons.

Perhaps you’re right with your assumption that BET wanted to avoid this award show as being labeled for Chris Brown’s redemption. Your retort would be more substantial if BET were more professional with the all around presentation. Enlisting Chris Brown’s tribute to Michael Jackson, then pulling him at the last minute, after he spent a couple of days rehearsing (which also entailed others time & money), was very unprofessional.

Madonna, Liza Minnelli & others apparently were not scheduled to perform, so there’s no point of them being brought up. Additionally, although they were avid Michael Jackson friends and/or followers, they do not represent the majority of the audience commenting here nor the audience BET may have initially been attempting to capture.

At the end of the day, or should I say, the end of the show, BET DID NOT accomplish what they set out to do, pay tribute to Michael Jackson as a complete entertainer.

The BET awards were not that great this year, and I was very dissappointed that there was no Chris Brown, considering how he adored MJ and how he’s one of the best young dancers of our time. The only performances I thought were good were the ones by Neyo/Jamie Foxx and Keri Hilson (Keri Hilson did the acapella thing at the end of her performance like MJ used to do).

I WAS SOOOOO DISAPPOINTED!!!! I cannot believe how bad that program was. My family on the west and east coasts were anticipating a fantastice opening by Chris Brown and instead we got, a very tired looking New Edition. Don’t get me wrong, we love them and grew up on them but…let’s be real, a huge opening with Chris Brown with some tight dance moves would have set the right tone. We all kept waiting and waiting for the show to climax but it never happened. I am also embarassed as an African American at the display of improper language and lyrics. This solidified my reasons for not watching BET lately: they would rather have men on stage cursing and talking about sex while underaged girls dance around them than a real artist and performer that made a mistake (and we all make mistakes). I pray that MTV does the tribute justice and include Chris Brown because it is really getting out of hand. This is the same thing the media has done to other black men in the public eye and BET played right into it. Wow! I was really dissapointed when i heard that chris was pulled out. It was the ONLY reason i was going to attempt to watch the BET’s…

Everyone knows that only 2 people can do MJ, thats the man himself and Chris.
Its so upsetting to think that BET cant put his last few months behind them to honour the king.
It isnt about Chris redeeming his image at all, its about him wanting to pay tribute to the man who has such a big influence on his dancing, singing and his all round career.

I hope the VMA’s allow chris to finally pay his tribute.
If they dont then i will be even more disheartened and dissapointed in the industry.

Chris Brown is my idol. I will always love him no matter what he did to Rihanna.

I agree with Nina, Shai, Lividfan, and Right. For everyone who is saying “he should have thought about that before he beat up his girlfriend” do you have a brain? Obviously he wasn’t expecting his biggest idol to die in the next four months. Obviously he was pushed to his breaking point…. ALL of us have been at some point… and BTW no one saw Chris after the fight; who’s to say she didn’t F–ck him up bad??

But anyways, Idk if Jay-Z stopped the performance, BET, Viacom or anybody. Bottom line, I know CB woulda turned it out and given a great tribute; who cares what he did 4 months ago?? If it’s in fact true that he spent 3 days rehearsing and they just pulled the spot from right under him, that’s pretty messed up. You basically got his hopes up and then just dropped them like THAT. Also, if the family requested he perform, what’s there to talk about? that night was dedicated to MJ and they wanted the family to be pleased B/c obviously they can’t ask Michael what he wants.

And it was a big disappointment to me cause the whoole time I was looking forward to seeing Chris; spent 3 1/2 hours getting my hopes up constantly; BET did him dirty. Hopefully he’ll get a chance to pay his tributes at another event.

P.S.- Y’all know he woulda KILLED Thriller!

I was just listening to the Tom Joyner Morning Show and Jawn Murray (gossip columnist) said that Chris didn’t perform because Jay Z objected to him. He threatened to pull out if Chris performed. And Beyonce’ almost didn’t perform because they wouldn’t let her sing Never Can Say Goodbye as an opening number. Selfish whores. THey didn’t know until the last minute whether she would perform or not. She basically said that she does the song she wants or she wouldn’t do a tribute song. I hope MTV leaves both their behinds out of it.

You said some things that were on point, too.
People are always so quick to judge someone, probably because it helps take their minds off their shortcomings and makes them feel better about themselves. It’s truly sad.
I refuse to be part of the populous that judges and crucifies that young man because of what he did. I’m not perfect either, by any stretch, and I know I wouldn’t like someone critisizing everything I did. “Treat others as you would want them to treat you”. I wouldn’t want to be judged, so I’m not gonna judge anyone.

The BET awards were a diseaster. I waited for Chris Brown and I was totally dissapointed. Why the hell did they pull chris brown. Jay-z if he is the reason that chris was unable to perform, then shame on him. What about the women he beat up, and the stabbing of another human being. The Bible says “he without sin cast the first stone”. They had a bunch of drug addicts perform and other people who have done things. I think this was a double standard. The show in my opinion was a complete diseaster, and BET executives should have been ashamed of themselves. M. Jackson would have been ashamed of that show. This show was suppose to be a dedication to a man who gave his all and all to show business, and was a perfectionist. I would never watch BET again. And BET should not let the Jay-Z’s of the world dictate the outcome of a show. If tupac and biggie were alive Jay-Z ’s weak ass would not be where it is now. But don’t worry Chris Brown will resurrect his career and when he does I hope he turn his back on BET and anyone else who kicked him when he was down. BET can burn in hell……………. .Wow truthfully to me .. itz all funny …. how …. chris brown whom knos all michael jacksons song and moves culdnt get the chance to preform for a tribute to his idol based on his past mistakes… were all humans .. therefore we all make mistakes .. hiz only 19 years old hiz mind is still proccesing all that fame .. if rihhanna can drop we shuld be able to …. u kan jude someone one there lifestyle … just like michael jackson made GREAT MUSIC and there waz no way we could base his lifestyle on the way his music influenced us as a WHOLE … and like I said before Chris Brown studied michaels every move therefore nobody would have been a better person for this tribute then him .. and I find this crazy how BET culdnt set aside hiz mistake for one night just to pay tribute to THE GREATEST PERFORMERE OF ALL TIME ….. It hard to believe that you read this entire story, yet
decided to base your belief on one statement that
appears to be an incomplete thought. When the author
said the Jackson family didn’t show up, they probably
meant more of the family didn’t show up. If BET did pull
the plug on Chris Brown’s performance, it was obviously
done at a time that it was inopportune for Janet & Joe
to turn around & leave.

It’s very sad to see such hatred for someone all of you obviously
don’t know. The point of the tribute, was too honor Michael
Jackson’s “music/dance genius, humanitarianism, & philanthropy.
Who better too honor his music/dance prowess, than Michael’s
foremost protégé, Chris Brown. Whether you agree with this
choice, is pointless; it is what it is.

Like Michael, Chris is growing up under a microscope where every
thing he does is being judged , unfortunately by such bigots as
yourselves. I’m sure none of you are perfect and wouldn’t want
to face the wrath of like kind; somehow I don’ think you could handle
it since it’s much easier to “dish” it out.
