Breaking News: Barack Obama Elected President!

We hear at Gossip On This called it months ago (back in January during the primaries) but CNN is projecting that Barack Obama has won the 2008 presidential election. WE DID IT! Not only have we elected the first African American president in the history of the United States of America, but we have put someone in office who can possibly turn this country around. It’s very doubtful that he’ll be able to restore our country 100% over the next 8 years, but he has a better chance of doing it than old man McLame.
It’s surreal to believe that all of this is a reality…
CNN projects that Barack Obama will be the nation’s 44th president. As polls closed on the West coast, the Illinois senator was projected to receive enough electoral votes to pass the 270-vote threshold. Obama is projected to win California, Washington, Oregon and Hawaii. He also is projected to win Virginia, a state that hasn’t voted for a Democratic president since 1964.
As Obama built up a commanding lead over Sen. John McCain, senior aides to the Arizona senator were growing pessimistic about his chances. When asked if they saw a path to victory, two senior McCain aides said no.
Click here to read more! And follow the break to check out a video of his historical victory speech.

When everyones taxes go up, and I mean everyones, not just those above two hundred thousand dollars, when gas prices go up because we won’t drill, when hundreds of thousands of jobs are lost, when the coal industry in at least eight states is bankrupted due to cap and trade systems, when we watch our electricity bills “sky rocket” because we won’t build nuclear plants, when America is attacked again and again, when going on to college becomes unnecessary because the “government will provide for you”, when all of this happens I want those who voted for Obama to do one thing, SHUT THE HELL UP. Since you voted for him you won’t be able to complain, after all you got exactly what you wanted, and deserve.

I, for one, am seriously looking to find a job in another country and setting up roots outside of the united states. This country is on it’s way down. We’ve learned nothing from our European sister countries except follow the leader. Asia is looking pretty good right now.

‘Today, is a day–which will live in infamy’ but not for the harshness of the past…but for the hope of the future.
I see America finally turning the corner it has seen ahead for so long. I feel the courage has finally come to make the turn for the better and I believe the strength to endure will remain among us for the situation at hand is one which will require America’s greatest resolve.
Our new president elect, a man who in both form and presence inspires onlookers to draw breath–to take heed of what truths are to come, will lead our way and he will do so not from behind our infront…but with us, amongst us. For this path before us is a road which he will help us to lay down not for ourselves to complete, but for our children and their children to come.
America has faced troubled times before and braved all harshness with honor and steallike merit and our difficulties today are liken to problems before…do not be afraid; do not lose hope, for within us all their is a light seeking to shine upon our fellow man to show the way. We can not get to the future alone. It will take us all, this country is ours and I say its time we take it back.
thank you

As I watch history being made along with the rest of America, there are so many positive energies and levels of history that have been achieved with Senator Obama being elected our President.
I cannot begin to imagine the feelings that many of my friends and family are experiencing and as their own history and heritage has come such a long, painful way to this moment.
But as a human being and a believer, I do feel and understand the momentous energy of this time. This is not the end of the story to a history of brutality, inhumanity, and injustice. This is the beginning of a new day, new hope, and a better world.
Many courageous people who have come before and who are not here physically to witness this.
What really struck me was the realization that the person who would re-ignite hope in so many, represents the segment of America who had so much hope taken from them for generations.
As I watched the crowd at Grant Park in Chicago, I realized the other milestones which have been achieved.
Youth has been re-energized. People of all faiths, ethnicity, generations and political parties have worked together to make this happen.
There will still be challenges but we have proven to ourselves that we can and will do what we put our minds to because as much as we have been divided as a nation, the ties that bind us are stronger than those that would divide us.

To all you young first time voters – please show respect, class and humility about your victory. It is a very tough time for some Americans that need time to adjust to the new president. You don’t want to further alienate the defeated party, but bring them together as fellow Americans. Acknowledge and show respect to McCain and the sacrifice that he made to this country.
Republicans are not bad people. Everyone is disgusted with the incompetence of Bush. Republicans are especially disgusted at what Bush did to the Republican Party and practically destroyed it in 8 short years. He mismanaged a war that should have taken only several months but took 6 years. He destroyed the federal budget, mismanaged Katrina, etc.

I really dont know what to say about Obama being elected president of the United States, in a way its good that the United States is having a change but I dont think it was best that Obama is the one for this change. In order for the United States to get turned around or even to start getting better they need someone with experience and not jsut someone that started getting recognized a couple of years ago. I dont like the fact that Obama got most of his votes because he is African American, he got most of votes from the young voters just because of his skin color, and I know that is a fact. The young voters aren’t as educated as the elder and the elder know what their talking about and have much more experience in life, raising a family, being responsible, and are just much more experienced in life. A lot of young African Americans got out their and voted for Obama just because he is also African American, they must not really know what he stands for. I dont think anyone wants to pay more taxes and I dont think anyone wants the prices to go up again to what they were a couple of months ago. I dont agree with McCain being president either because he was not gonna change America and make it a better country to live in. I hope that everything turns out good for everyone that lives in the United States of America. I know that Obama isn’t gonna do much in a few months or even a year but I hope that he does change things around without hurting the economy. I’m glad that The United States elected a democrat because that was the real change that America needed. I wish Obama all the luck and hopefully he does change this country around in a good path.

Majority of Obama supporters come from the last horrible eight years of America that Bush ran in the ground. McCain chose Sarah Palin as his running mate…..are we seriously taking about experience here. Face it, racism is a major issue in this country and most of the white people in America can accept the fact that there is a African American in the “White House”. We needed this change. This hope. I live in Chicago and the love and harmony shows me that he has always CHANGED the way some people think. It’s not worth it. Everyone is happy. This event not only shook up America, it shook up the Globe! Do you realize the history in the making?! Barack will do wonders in office. He’ll have a hell of a lot of repairing to do from the last 8 years. McCain supporters are racists. I understand that African American voted for Barack but we need leaders. They took one and we regained another. BARACK OBAMA 08!

As a Canadian, for the first time in my life I wish I was American. You have elected one of the greatest people in the U.S. to lead your country. Taxes are not the enemy. Higher taxes mean less tuition costs (50,000/year compared to Canada’s 3,000/year), it means a proper health care system where people do not claim bankruptcy over a broken limb, it means better social programs for everyone, including the middle-age who will benefit from Social Security, it means less reliance on foreign industries, and it means a stronger economy that does not cater to the elite yet the masses. The racism that I see in America as an outsider is very prevalent and it disgusts me to know that people are still being judged on the colour of their skin.
The previous comment is correct, republican’s are not bad people, however, the ideology behind right-wing conservatism only benefits the upper-class and corporations. For those people who wish to seek residence outside of the U.S., good luck. You are the individuals who perpetuate the stereotype that American’s are ignorant, racist, and over-bearing, and as a citizen of your closest neighbour, be forewarned: do not come to Canada because you’re not welcome here. I wish I was able to paint a rosy picture for you, but you will not be able to seek solace in another country either because they dislike your type just as much as Canadian’s do.
With Obama as your head of state other countries will no longer see America as a school yard bully, yet a team player in world politics. This is what America needs. The world stage is turning into a group effort and tonight it was a clear choice: either you’re in or you’re out, and you have voted to be in. Congratulations on your victory and please remember to be kind to your fellow republican citizens. Losing an election builds character and tolerance to others, so treat them as you would want to be treated if Obama lost.
Welcome to the team!

I have read some of the comments here, most of which are positive; some not. I think all of us should follow the example that Senator Obama demonstrated throughout the last 21 months. He showed us how to take the high road. Yes, the outcome tonite was not what some people hoped for. Those of us who have supported Senator Obama and did what we could to make it happen, should not gloat, be disrespectful or abusive.
Racism is ugly. War and hatred are ugly. Our country has spilled a tremendous amount of blood in our short existence of 232 years. If we love our families, our children, our friends, and our country, we cannot afford to look back or go back. We must move forward.
We all know how we felt on 9/11 and how it changed us. There will always be those who would seek to destroy us – let’s not do the job for them by destroying each other.

On the eve of 9/11, my personal prayer is that I:
Never take a single moment for granted;
Never miss an opportunity to let those I love know how I feel, even when it is not reciprocated;
Never forget to smile amidst my tears;
Never be too busy to help someone, whether friend or stranger;
Never pass by a mountain without taking note of its majesty;
Never rise in the morning without thanking God for another day to live and love;
Never lose wonder in a rainbow;
Never let the sun set on my anger;
Never deafen to the sweet trill of a bird;
Never deny forgiveness;
Never become so independent that I cannot ask for help;
Never assume the gift of freedom;
Never grow so stubborn that I cannot apologize for hurting another;
Never believe that I have learned all I can;
Never become so proud that I become my only friend;
Never own so much that I want more than I need;
Never grow so weary that I cease to fight;
Never become so numb that I lose compassion;
Never forfeit hope for defeat;
Never trade love for money;
Never grow so silent that I allow freedom to atrophy;
Never hang my head so low that I forget I am an heir to the Kingdom.

I didn’t vote for Obama. Not because he is HALF black, I actually wanted Powell to run, but because he’s a socialist. He got what 95% of the black vote? SHOCKING….not. When it was known he won the election did I hear anyone saying anything like “Healthcare will finally get fixed”, or “the war will finally be taken care of”, or “Thank God the economy will be much better now”? NO…first thing I heard was “First black president” followed by “He will be inaugurated on the 100th anniversary of the NAACP”. Amazing…Black Panthers at the polls intimidating voters and nothing said. Was the KKK at the polls? Be proud of your new president, not because he’s a half breed but because of his ideas and actions.

Best part is how no one realizes how we just elected the first Arab American into office, look it up, he is 50% white, 37.5% Arab and 12.5% African……just wait and see all the sh*# that is gonna come down. Time to move to Canada and not because I dont love this country, but because so many people were fooled by this guy…..you really should be required to have an education to vote. At least we will know who to blame for what will happen in the world.

This is a very sad day for America. Obama won because many, many conservatives did not vote in this election. Why? Because the Republican candidate was a pale imitation of Bush who is not a conservative either. This country is in for a very rough next four years. And I sincerely hope that when all of our taxes are raised, our military is cut in half and the economy finishes going down the tube, all the Obama supporters will be happy.
Conservatives, this is your wake up call. Here’s hoping this country survives till the next election.

Real American
November 5, 2008 at 8:19 AM
The real America has spoken, loud and clear. We want the Republican Party out of office and out of our lives. The last 8 years of this administration sucked the life out of good, honest Americans. They tried to get 4 more years, but we were too smart for ya! Real Americans want to move ahead, want a better future and want it for all. The negative comments I’m reading here, vindicates all our votes for Obama, who wants to move us to a better future. America will not tolerate bigotry, racism and threats from those who don’t believe in democracy. We elected our president and you will accept it, if you don’t like it, move. You are free to leave, and we would be better served without you. You idiots just don’t get it! McCain gave it a good shot. But the truth is he did not have what it takes to be President. Military experience alone does not qualify you to be President. We honored his service and respect him for that, but his connection with every day people was out of touch, evident when he stated “the fundamentals of our economy were sound”, give me a break McCain wake up! His selection of Sarah Palin demonstrated his lack of judgment. Who was Sarah Palin? Oh I know the hottie that stated “community organizers have NO responsibilities”! Well Sarah, here’s a lesson in Community Organizing 101, Obama organized the biggest election win you can only dream of! Your smart remarks and jabs revealed you really had no substance, and Americans saw right through ya! When all else failed, McCain and Palin reached for “Joe the Plumber”, who the McCain campaign again goofed up on. Seems Joe the Plumber is not even a licensed plumber and has not payed his taxes lately! McCain again demonstrated he just doesn’t get it, it’s all fluff and fluff isn’t running the white house. I mean McCain even introduced Palin’s husband, “The First Dude” the toughest guy he knew! How long did you know him John? Americans are worried about how to pay the next mortgage payment, and you’re introducing us to “The First Dude” with reverence as if we care of his snowmobiling racing crap. McCain just didn’t get it. We know how Vets are treated when they return from service, we know the conditions on the V.A. Hospitals is deplorable, now yesterday it was reported that military personnel overseas were encountering difficulties in voting so many did not vote! America needed a change, and thank god we have it now.

So, so sad. God’s wrath is on us, and we deserve it. Tolerating the murder of millions of babies every year, tolerating the perversion of homosexuality, promulgating the lie of evolution to help us pretend there is no God to answer to, etc., etc., etc. God forgive us and have mercy. Those are the real issues. God will bless our economy only if we obey Him. Obama will be the instrument God uses to bring the USA to it’s knees if we don’t. Just look at the adulation the world is heaping on him. Unprecedented. And, the worhip-like fawning from the media and his supporters. Creepy. What a shame that anyone would vote for someone just because of their skin color. This is the beginning of the end.
THE WRATH.
November 5, 2008 at 4:45 PM
This is ridiculous. People on here are sickening. WE HAVE A BLACK PRESIDENT COMING TO THE WHITE HOUSE. Yes, I said it before any of my other points. It’s the truth and it brings pride and joy to my soul. We have fought for this day for so many long centuries, and its finally came. Did the ignorant people on here know that most of Obama’s voters were WHITE? Technically, if it wasn’t for WHITE PEOPLE, John McCain would be our next president, and that’s the truth. We need to stop looking at race as an issue because its stupid and just plain wrong. People are talking about moving to another country. Why? You haven’t moved in the past 8 years Bush was in office that we’ve been complaining about. Why move now? He hasn’t even been inaugurated yet; not even given the chance to prove he will bring change to our country and people are already being prejudice and ignorant.
GOD BLESS AMERICA. We sure as hell need it.

Tomorrow is starting now.
My emotions run free today as I watch the improbable turn into reality. We searched for a leader. The leaders are out there. We are all the leaders that we have all been searching for. Together as one, we can change history and we did.
As I grew to know Barrack Obama, I’ve grown more and more inspired. I watched him stay focused. I watched him not respond to the attacks. I watched him look in the mirror and he saw all of us. He looked into the mirror and also saw the values of Gandhi. He stood on the shoulders of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rev. Jessie Jackson, Oliver Brown, Rose Parks, Jim Crow, Lincoln, JFK, the Founding Fathers, and all of the other revolutionary figures of this country’s history.
I took the day off of work yesterday to volunteer for the Obama/Biden campaign. I went back to that house that had the house hold of 3 registered voters who had never voted in their whole life. They had immigrated from Africa 20+ years ago. They didn’t know how to vote. When I went to their house yesterday, no one was home. I left a map of how to get to their voting location. I also left a note saying I would take them and help them if they needed help. I worried that they wouldn’t get my message in time. I worried that the Obama campaign would be just a few votes short. I feared for the people that stood at Grant Park in Chicago on election night. I thought back to the stories of Grant Park that my family talked about. I wasn’t born yet when that had happened. I learned that 40 years ago, massive race riots erupted in that very same park. I watched the intense fear and simultaneous joy tear up in Rev. Jessie Jackson’s eyes. I knew he had feared the worst and was hopeful all at once. He was alive then. We the children of the post segregation era are innocently ignorant of those hate filled, revolutionary days.
This morning, I received a phone call from that family where I had taken the map and note to, to help them vote. They took my note and all went to the polls last night. They (all 3 of them) voted for Obama/Biden and they voted for the first time in their entire lives. They left a message for me and my family. They thanked me and my family. They were so inspired to have taken part in the process of change. They knew that they counted. They knew that WE needed them. We… The people in the mirror. Together we were one movement.
This was not just an election. This was a MOVEMENT. Tomorrow is the first chapter in a new book.
My heart bursts with so many emotions every minute. I could feel the world’s weight last night. I felt a shift. I felt a great heaviness. Hi felt history. Did you feel it?
A movement is powerful…
A movement takes courage…
A movement requires us all to overcome fear…
A movement insists on us all planning for a great sacrifice…
We are not Democrats. We are not Republicans. We are not Independents.
We are the next great generation. We are tomorrow.
Tomorrow starts now.
There are 5 people in this household who have motivated dozens of people to DO SOMETHING to make things change. We, all of us, are the tsunami and not just a tidal wave. We are all one. We are all small pebbles in the raging river and we have just changed the course of nature. We have reached the base of the mountain and we are prepared to climb. We are motivated and stronger than ever before.
Thank you.
