Usher performing “In This Club” as the opener for the 2008 BET Awards, which aired last night live from Los Angeles.

The 2008 BET Awards went down last night, and while there were a few lackluster performances (Usher’s being one of them), there were a few memorable, surprising, and exciting moments. One being Alicia Keys’ performance when she brought out SWV, En Vogue, and TLC! Another notable performance of the evening was Ne-Yo’s, where he showed us he can hang with the big dogs when it comes to his dance moves – he even brought out the Jabbawockees (winners of MTV’s America’s Dance Crew). Chris Brown did his thing as well, and surprised everyone when he brought out Ciara. Did Rihanna approve of this beforehand? I’m curious to know. And speaking of Rihanna, did anyone else notice how far she’s come along, as far as her live vocals? I was really impressed when she performed Take A Bow! And last, but most certainly not least, on my list of the best performances of the night, Lil’ Wayne! He kind of scared me towards the end of the show because it seemed like he wasn’t going to come out. The show was already running 15 or 20 minutes over when he was introduced. But he did come out, and he showed us exactly how and why he has sold nearly 1,500,000 copies of Tha Carter: III so far! He started out with Got Money (feat. T-Pain), paid homage to Static Major (R.I.P.) with Lollipop, and ended off his performance with A Millie. He had the whole crowd hyped, and ended off the show perfectly.

While the 2008 BET Awards did have its good moments, much of the show left me with a bitter taste in my mouth. I expected a lot more from Usher. His performance was probably the most hyped up (pre-show), and ended up being one of the absolute worst of the night. While I love Keyshia Cole’s Heaven Sent, she really needs to work on her live vocals … and her stage presence. She had a lot of energy, she just didn’t know how to keep it all together. She looked like she was doing too much to me.

In my opinion, the 2007 BET Awards were much better. The performances, the overall show, and oh yeah … the host! Who the hell approved of D.L. Hughley being the host of this year’s show? I hope they received a pink slip in their box this morning. BRING MO’NIQUE BACK!!!

The 2008 BET Awards aired last night and yours truly is here to inform you of the hottest (and not so hot) styles worn at the award show. Some of the best dressed female celebs of the night were Rihanna, Gabrielle Union, Jennifer Hudson, and Alicia Keys. Rihanna wore a neon yellow Giambattista Valli dress from his spring/summer 2008 line, Gabrielle Union wore a gorgeous white Celine Vonn dress, Jennifer Hudson wore A brown Peter Soronen corset dress, and Alicia Keys wore a strapless pink David Meister David Meister dress with Melody Ehsani Hate/Love Rings. I also loved Alicia’s Sergio Rossi heels. Keep reading for more styles from the show.

Here are photos of Nelly, Solange, Cassie, and Lil’ Mama arriving at the 2008 BET Awards. Who approved of the Little Miss Bo Peep look Lil’ Mama calls herself wearing? I’m starting to think she does this shit for attention, lol. And she should be severely punished for bringing an innocent child into the mix. Just wrong! More flicks after the break…

This past Sunday (June 22nd), I had the opportunity to attend the “Art of Love” tour featuring Chrisette Michele and Raheem DeVaughn live from inside Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason center. The show started around 8PM and opened with Solange, she did about 3 or 4 songs from her forthcoming album, Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams. Her performance was very Supreme era with a lot of attitude, “I feel good, I look good, but I broke my Goddamn toe!” exclaimed the soulful singer. If I had not already known about Solange breaking her toe (prior to that remark) I probably would have been shocked; she held her composer extremely well. I cannot remember but two songs I think I liked; they were “I Decided,” which was a song written by Pharrell Williams and Solange herself, and “T.O.N.Y.” an acronymic song Solange said meant “The Other Night Y”. Unfortunately, I did not get the chance to meet Solange or interview her, but overall my experience with the show was fun! Also, Chrisette did an amazing job and was simply beautiful. Meanwhile, Raheem, by the way congrats on the BET J Award, commanded the stage! He had a painter in the background, Raheem was on the floor singing and crawling, running around the building — it was a performance. Raheem will really give your money’s worth. Remember that video of Shaq dissing Kobe a few days ago? Well, turns out Maricopa County of Phoenix, Arizona didn’t find it too funny! Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Shaq used inappropriate racial derogatory statements and foul language, and left him no choice. Sheriff Arpaio said to the Associated Press:

“I want his two badges back,” Arpaio said, “Because if any one of my deputies did something like this, they’re fired. I don’t condone this type of racial conduct.”
